WHAT’S INSIDE

Chatfield and MCC Host Bicycle Safety Rodeo

Desiree Londrigan shared an

article by reporter Alex Petrie in

the Michigan Homepapers about

the MCC Public Safety Bike

Rodeo at Chatfield Elementary

School in Lapeer in June.

Chatfield School and MCC

hosted a joint effort to help edu-

cate third grade students in bicycle

safety on Lapeer’s MCC campus.

MCC Police Sergeant Nancy Met-

calfe helped organize the bicycle safety class for Chat-

field’s third grade classes. Students were fitted for

helmets, which they were able to keep, Hurley Hospi-

tal’s Safe Kids program provided bicycles for a bicy-

cle safety obstacle course, and MCC Police provided

new bikes for a giveaway.

“We got a bunch of new Mongoose bikes that we

gave away, and the kids all got to keep their helmets,”

said Metcalfe as she helped fit the students for their

new helmets, instructing them how to properly wear

the safety gear.

MCC has hosted the event in years past, but this

marked Lapeer’s first Rodeo, which saw approxi-

mately 55 third graders participate. MCC Police offi-

cers were stationed throughout a parking lot on

campus, directing students through simulated railroad

crossings, stop signs, yield signs and other obstacles.

News from the Southern Lakes Center: The Institute for Med-

ical Simulation participated in the Science Olympiad at Emma Mur-

phy Elementary School in the Lapeer school district May 22.

Approximately 50 second, third and fourth grade students got a

chance to talk to “Charles,” the simulated patient – one group even

sang to him! They were also able to listen to his heart and lung

sounds, and gave him chest compressions during a simulated heart at-

tack. The students were very excited to be able to help bring Charles

back to life.

There was a lot going on in MCC Technology lately. Clark Har-

ris, Ph.D., Dean of Technology, was elected Vice President of the

Michigan Occupational Deans Administrative Council. MODAC pro-

motes and supports community college education for the state of

Michigan. It focuses on assisting member colleges to achieve goals

that address the future needs of Michigan's workforce, employers and

students.

Thirteen area Girl Scouts came and learned about STEM activi-

ties in the FabLab. Four instructors, Dennis Hughes, Jason Slade,

Matthew Sullivan, and Rick Sveller put together a project for the

girls to learn about the STEM areas of CADD, Electronics and Me-

chanical. They made a house with the Epiloc Laser and wired in a

light. The girls were very engaged and pleased with the activity.

Several Faculty and Staff in the RTC presented mini workshops

for members of the Board of Trustees for the Charles Stewart Mott

Foundation. The mini workshops were part of a day's activity for the

Board of Trustees. At Mott College they participated in three rota-

tional workshops, one of the groups presented "advanced manufactur-

ing" in the highbay - RFID, Electronics, CNC & Robotic; another

group learned about the FabLab, and the third presentation was by

Entrepreneurs that have used the FabLab.

Thomas Spademan, Philosophy Faculty in Humanities, was re-

cently elected chair of the City of Flint Zoning Board of Appeals,

after serving several years as vice chair. It is his seventh year on the

board.

Counseling & Student Development reports that Anne Gupton

presented at the 2014 TeamUP National Student Success Conference

held in Chicago, IL on June 13. The conference was “Fast

Forward...Inventing the Future of College Success.” Anne's Light-

ning Round Presentation was entitled "Moving Forward: Using Digi-

tal Textbooks with Reluctant Learners.”

Frank Sobie, Geography Faculty in Fine Arts and Social Sci-

ences, was presented with the prestigious "Geospatial Achievement

Award” at the annual "Improving Michigan's Access to Geographic

Information Networks" (IMAGIN) Conference April 29, in Mt. Pleas-

ing contributions to the geospatial technology field, to the IMAGIN

organization and its geospatial professionals, colleagues, members

and the public that it serves.

Frank has been a Professional Geographer focusing on the field

of Mapping since graduating from Eastern Michigan University in

1977. He served on the IMAGIN Board of Directors for 10 years and

participated with a number of IMAGIN committees. Most recently he

was a judge for the IMAGIN “Student Paper and Poster Competition”

at Schoolcraft College in January. This competition was open to col-

lege and university students in the field of Geographic Information

Systems (GIS). IMAGIN is Michigan’s statewide professional GIS as-

sociation.

Mott Middle College (MMC) High School Assistant Principal

access 2-26-2014,

representing the largest student group in the state of Michigan at

the event. The students and PTA Program Coordinator Rebecca

Myszenski spoke with support staff members for State Representa-

tive Pam Faris and Senator Jim Ananich. The proposed bill passed

out of the Michigan House on June 11, representing a monumental

step toward achieving Direct Consumer Access to Physical Therapy

in Michigan, said Myszenski. The next step for SB 690 is to be

signed by the Governor. Once the bill is signed, all 50 states and

the District of Columbia will permit direct consumer access to

physical therapy evaluation and treatment. It is expected that the

effective date will be January 1, 2015. Pictured are PTA students,

Myszenski and two PT faculty from the University of Michigan-

The Mott Campus Clowns made the statewide Special Olympics

extra special on May 31 and June 1. This marks the third year the MCC

Clowns have been invited to the State Games in Mt. Pleasant, accord-

ing to Dr. Brian Ivory, Honors Program Coordinator.

The clown troupe participated in the Opening Ceremonies and

Closing Ceremonies, including the closing Victory Dance, and other

special events. The Opening and Closing ceremonies involve "meeting-

and-greeting" the athletes and distributing flyers and red foam noses.

While in the special events area, the MCC Clowns performed half-hour

magic shows.

The "clown troupe" for this outing involved students who were

previously enrolled in HONS 251, where they were trained as clowns.

While at the Special Olympics in Mt. Pleasant, the students stay in the

residence halls at Central Michigan University.
