Gordon Shepherd, SecurityOfcer at the Royal Edinburgh,
is into Rock n Roll big time!
So Gordon, tell us about yourhobby, Rock n Roll music.I got into it when I was growingup thats what people were
listening to then. I used to play thebass guitar in bands years ago andnow I just like to go along to Rock
n Roll events in the North East.
Where might we fnd youon the weekend? Ive beenknown to go down to Newcastleon a Friday night, then homeon Saturday and back downagain on Saturday night, thenhome on Sunday and backdown again on Sunday night.I go to Skegness every year inMarch for a ve day Rock n Roll
event at Butlins. Thousands ofpeople go there and everyoneis dressed the part. Every dayabout seven bands play - it allstarts at 1:30 in the afternoonand goes until 4 in the morning.
What kind of dancing iseveryone into? Original 50s jiveand rockabilly. There are theBoppers, dances for the men,and the Strollers, dances for thelassies. You dont have to go incouples because there are dancesfor men on their own and dancesfor lassies on their own. Theresalways lots of partners to dancewith anyway!
And what do you wear? I gotmy rst made-to measure Drape
jacket and trousers when Iwas 16. I have 3 other suitsthat I wear a red tartan one
with red creepers to go withit, a kingsher blue one with
matching blue suede shoes, anda black one with cherry redvelvet on the front of it.
Can we see a picture of you inthe red tartan suit?Ah, I thinktheyre all tucked away in theattic at this point.
Thats a shame I guess welljust have to imagine it!
dancin in
the glasshousesTo round up 2012, and inhonour of the Royal Eds very
own Rock n Roll King, we held
pre-Christmas dance party atthe Glasshouses it was a
full house!
We transformed the Glasshousesinto a Rock n Roll venue
complete with a stage, danceoor and our very own Graces
Diner. We sang along with
Eilidh and her Ukulele Jukebox
whilst eating homemade cakesand sipping on fruity ShirleyTemples cocktails (rememberthat ginger ale, lemonade andgrenadine combination fromyour childhood?). Two celebrityguests graced our stage Sandy
from Grease (Shona McVey) andthe one and only Elvis (AnthonySchrag) and there was some
fantastic dancing and some veryimpressive Elvis impersonators!
It was a great joint effort and wewould like to thank everyonefrom the art workshops and
Garden Club who became the signmakers, cleaners, decorators, and rocket makers and whomade this event such a success.
Elvis was here ladies andgentleman, but he has now leftthe building!
14 Welcome to 1950s
everybody!
