To get us started, Trevor Cromiegave us the lowdown on EverPresent Past a programmeof fascinating talks, creative

workshops, an exhibition atthe Talbot Rice Gallery, andfun events, all run by Artlink.

Over the course of the year theactivities are building up anddigging deep to uncover theeveryday stories, creative talentsand hidden experiences that makethe Royal Edinburgh Hospital whatit is today.

The programme has been designedaround the diverse interests of allthose who make up and contributeto the community here. For those of

you with an interest in the historyand work of the hospital there aretalks on the life of the poet RobertFergusson, patients experiencesthrough the ages, and outsiderart, as well as an imaginativetake on the future of psychiatric

care.

Or perhaps you want to exploreyour own talents? Then why nottry out one of the art workshops

which run throughout the week atthe Glasshouses, or join one of thesinging groups?

If you fancy playing a part insomething even bigger then therea chance to use your detective skilto help collect objects and storiesfor an ambitious new artworkcommemorating the hospitalshistory.

Whats more, the Ever Present Pasprogramme is open to everyoneconnected to the hospital. Whether

youre a patient or former patienta current or a past member of stafa relative or a neighbour, or if you

just have an interest in the historyof this fascinating place, then we

want to hear from you.

Back in Anne Elliotshothouse of creativityeveryone is talking about

the fete. This year well berevisiting an old hospitaltradition and staging a

parade theres even talkof getting a piper in.

Grace has been busy workingaway trying to nish herhuge fabric banner in timeand she kindly showed usher progress so far. Beautifulpaintings of owers tell thestory of her recovery in theRoyal Edinburghs Meadows

Ward.

On one side, heathersymbolises her early feelingsof loss and solitude while theLily of the Valley oppositerepresents her return tohappiness. In the centreshe has drawn pictures ofa special day out in NorthBerwick alongside one of theregular tea parties organised

by Julie Sutherland.

Entirely handmade, itssure to be a spectacularcentrepiece for the daysfestivities.

But the fete is only one part ofthe story. Anne is determinedto make sure that patientsartworks make a big splashthroughout the bicentenarycelebrations There are plansto have the fantastic creationsproduced in her workshopsturned into a commemorativeset of professionally-producedprints.

Shes also looking for newways to display paintings,

prints and sculpturesthroughout the hospital andaround the local community.So look out for artworksappearing on walls, billboardsand even in the windows oflocal houses.

Gathering together drawingsand doodles, testing out printingtechniques, embroidery andsewing patterns, Laura Springhas certainly been busy.

Did you see her textile caf whenit popped up in the Link Gallery atthe beginning of the year? Well, its

back, and this time she has the artistLaura Aldridge working with her.

Theyre planning to expand theenterprise and tell us that the caf

will be popping up in wards and inthe Glasshouses over the summermonths. Individual creativity kits

will also be sent out to staff andpatients who prefer to work in theirown time.

Laura and Laura rst foundinspiration looking through thearchives where they discoveredclay pipes, cups and embroideriesemblazoned with the REH coat ofarms. Now they are on the huntfor ideas that can be worked upinto high quality products whichcommemorate the hospitals history.To explain what they mean, we takea look at Maggies sketches of owls.

Set into a repeat pattern and printonto fabric, the results already looincredibly professional but theresmore to come. The next stage is totry sewing it up into a tablecloth o

a footstool.

They plan to create a wide selectioof affordable handmade items whi

will be displayed at the Talbot RiceGallery in November. Perhaps asimple drawing by a member of st

will end up printed on a t-shirt, ora painting produced in one of thei

workshops will be transformed inthe design for a set of dinner plateOne things for sure, if Maggies rexperiments are anything to go bythe merchandise is sure to sell likehotcakes.

Did you know that there are threenew singing groups at the RoyalEdinburgh?

First we have the new staff choirwhich has started to meet for aquick musical blast on Tuesdaylunchtimes between 12.30pm and1pm at The Glasshouses.

Then theres The Orchard CLinicgroup. And last, but certainly notleast, the Heart and Soul Singsters,

who have already staged their rstlive performance.

Looking sensational in matchingbright red t-shirts and accompaniedby John Grieve on guitar, theirfavourite tunes include hits by TheBeatles, Eric Clapton and The Kinks.

Lots more concerts are plannedincluding a mass sing together withother choirs from across Edinburghat the Talbot Rice Gallery in Juneand special performances at the fete.

Theyre always looking for peoplewho like to sing for fun, so if youfancy having a go yourself, popalong to the Glasshouses on Tuesdayafternoons between 3pm and 4pm.

The Royal Edinburgh Hospital singing group the Heart and Soul Singsters join forces withthe Edinburgh University Music Society chorus for a mass sing in the Georgian Gallery.Part of the Ever Present Past programme celebrating 200 years of the hospital, the masssing will be a fun event to experiment with the acoustics of the gallery and for people toexperience singing as part of a big group.

There will be an open rehearsal to practise the songs we will be singing at the event whichanyone is welcome to join. If you cant make the rehearsal everyone attending the publicperformance will be welcome to sing or hum along.

The Ever Present Past project at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital is developed and coordinated by Artlink. The

project explores the history of the Hospital through a series of talks, events and workshops and artist placements

throughout 2013 the Hospitals bi-centenary year will culminate in a public exhibition at the Talbot Rice Gallery

from November 2013 to January 2014.

Tom Arnott has workedat the Royal Edinburghfor over two decades.

As well as being theOperations Managerhes also something ofan expert on the historyof the hospital.

What does 2013 meanto you?

200 years ago on the19th of July 1813, the rstpatient was admitted here.The hospital became a

pioneering centre for thetreatment of psychiatricillness and this year werecelebrating this incrediblehistory.

Can you give us a avourof whats coming up?

A lot of activities willhappen in July tocommemorate the dateof this rst admission.Bunting willdecorate thegrounds and

were planninga special lunchfor staff andpatients.

Watch out for the partyboxes which will be sent

out to each ward.

In the main corridora special exhibition ofhuge portraits of pastmedical superintendents including the founder

Andrew Duncan willmake a big visual impact.

At the same time wellbe transforming a roomopposite the shop into anopen archive where youcan nd intriguing (andsometimes controversial)

artefacts that reveal whatlife would have been likefor people here in daysgone by.

Over the course of theyear well also be hostingbarbecues in the gardens,talks and a Royal visit. Thentheres the fete its goingto be bigger, brighter and

better than ever this year...

ourselves the challengeof photographing everymember of staff. The ideato produce a record of 201so that people can look baon us in 200 years time.

All the staff will get a copyof this book together witha bicentenary mementoand a certicate.

Ah yes, thats the MonarcStone. Originally it wouldhave stood in the old villaof Tipperlin. Edinburgh foused to holiday here to geaway from the stale air ofthe Old Town!

display, the famous Glasshouses picnic

How does an artist goabout creating new workfor an exhibition? ClaireBarclay has been runningart workshops in theGlasshouses for nearlytwo years.

Now shes been asked to drawupon her experiences andproduce a new sculpture fordisplay at the Talbot RiceGallery.

But where to start? For Claire,the answer is simple: she

wants to play. She tells us thatits when shes working with

patients, messing aroundwith materials or exploring

the hospital grounds andarchives that the sparks ofideas begin to y. So shell

be spending the next sixmonths working with a fewlike-minded participantson a one-to-one basis.

This process of exchangingideas and sharing inspiration

will help to inform thedevelopment of Clairesambitious new sculpture

which will be exhibited at theEver Present Past exhibition

at the Talbot Rice Galleryin November.

Over the coming months the NewYork-based artist Mark Dion

will work with a team of peopleto gather together 200 objects torepresent each year of the RoyalEdinburgh Hospitals history.

Of course theyll be plunderingthe ofcial collections, but theyrealso on the hunt for items that you

wouldnt normally see in a museu

The rst hospital charter,memorable characters from last

years Gnome Olympics, patientsartworks and even the RoyalEdinburgh potato, will all feature

in the collection.To keep us on our toes Mark willalso be making his own objects toadd into the mix. The nal selectio

will be brought together for theexhibition at the Talbot Rice Gallercapping off a fantastic year ofcreative celebration.

We are looking for detectives to help us to

unearth the 200 year history of the Royal

Edinburgh Hospital. We would like you to

suggest a number of different objects which

you think represent each year of the REHs

200 year history.

It could be a nurses uniform from 1973,

a letter from a relative in hospital in 1945

or a newpaper cutting from 1923. Its up

to you. All we need are the objects and the

stories attached.

These objects will form an artwork by Mark

Dion, which will tell the wider story of the

Royal Edinburgh Hospital. The exhibition

will be at the Talbot Rice Gallery November

2013 to February 2014.
