HORI General Election Polls 1983 Conducted for The Labour Party

Technical Details

All these surveys were conducted amongst representative quota samples of

adults aged 18+, interviewed in stratified random samples of new parliamentary

constituencies in Great Britain (Northern Ireland was excluded from the

sample). Interlocking quota controls (sex x age x social clasb) were set to

ensure that the sample was representative of the population in three regions

(North, Midlands and South).

A total of 110 constituency sampling points were selected to form the basis

for our sample. To select these constituencies, we first listed all the new

parliamentary constituencies in Great Britain by standard region (North to

South, ie, Scotland first). Within each standard region we listed

metropolitan constituencies first, followed by county consituencies. Within

each of these, constituencies were listed according to the proportion of the

population who were in the professional/managerial social classes. The 110

constituencies were selected with probability proportional to the size of

their electorates. The 110 constituencies were split into two separate

samples of 55 by taking alternate constituencies. The Labour Party Polls were

conducted in 55 of these constituences (see following list).

None of these surveys was we~ghted.
