We're deeply disappointed to report that the coordinator(s) for the City of Montgomery's NYE 2016 Event which was held downtown last Thursday night chose yet again to excluded local musicians now for the third year in a row. What's even worse is that back in July the city held a battle of the bands at the amphitheater entitled "Rock The Park" where they solicited area bands to perform for "exposure" with a chance to get token compensation for the top three finishers, but with a risk of zero compensation for the bands who didn't place. The "grand prize" was the promise of an opening slot with commensurate compensation in the city's NYE event for the winning band. About half a dozen bands showed up and poured their hearts out to entertain the thousands in attendance that day in the sweltering heat. 3 bands were chosen by a panel of judges and the 1st place band won the NYE gig. By all accounts it was a success! At that time, we (MAMA) were encouraged to see what appeared to be an offer, finally, by the city to include a local band in the NYE event and publicly praised and applauded their efforts. However, last Thursday night when it came time for the city to follow through on the promise of the NYE gig for the winning band, they refused to offer compensation and expected the band to play for "the exposure". To the band's credit, they declined. So here we are now again left scratching our heads wondering why this continues to happen. Is it just ignorance on the city's part or shortsightedness, lack of vision? Is it "don't know, "don't care" or "don't care to know"? Do they even understand what a monumental slap in the face this was to the local community of musicians, fans and supporters? If you're the person working in the city department who's responsible and you're reading this, let us try clear it up for you. Please consider the benefits of going out of your way to find or create opportunities to include and invest in our area's musical artists and help build our music culture. The same artists who live here, raise families here, send their kids to school here and pay their taxes here. To hire and fairly pay out of area bands in prior years to play this event but expect a top local band to play for nothing is ludicrous and unacceptable. Our artists don't need exposure, they need real support and respect for their craft. Stop sending our tax money back home with bands to Atlanta, New Orleans, Nashville etc.

Buy local talent as much and as often as you can. Keep our tax dollars working in our community. Certainly this makes sense for a city entity to comprehend the benefits of doing so. Sure, bring in a headline act or out of area act for major events if you like, but put area artists on the tickets as well and pay them fairly. We have many extremely talented artists/bands right here, as good as any you'll find anywhere and that's a fact. If you don't believe it get out and see for yourself or just take the word of our 2500+ members, followers and supporters. Do you not think a strong local music scene will help generate revenue for the city? Certainly you do. What if the next Nat King Cole, Commodores, Tommy Shaw, Wilson Pickett, Trust Company, McQueen Street, Richard Hatcher, Jess Meuse, Rat Race or the many others in the long list of musical talent our community has produced was waiting in the wings today for an opportunity, would they ever get it? What about the next Jamey Johnson or Hank Williams even? The bottom line is this, the current status quo of the city's apparent apathy, unintentional or not, towards area musicians is unacceptable and the music culture in our community deserves much better if it's to survive and thrive.
