WhyAppalachian Power identified the opportunity to improve power quality following a review of its system. The company determined certain equipment was not responding to momentary power disturbances as quickly as it should. Making the proposed upgrades associated with this project will improve system performance and increase customer satisfaction and productivity.

WhereFive of the 14 current substations are in Montgomery County. Four are in Giles County in the towns of Pearisburg, Glen Lyn and Narrows. The last five are in Roanoke (4) and Botetourt counties.

WhatThe Roanoke Area Switching Improvements Project consists of making upgrades to at least 14 existing Appalachian Power substations in central Virginia. The project will provide customers with a more reliable electrical grid by decreasing the likelihood of extended power outage.

Appalachian Power plans to address the need for a more modern transmission grid by making upgrades to at least 14 existing substations in central Virginia.

The Roanoke Area Switching Improvements Project will enhance reliability to residential, commercial and industrial customers in Roanoke, Montgomery, Botetourt and Giles counties by improving system recovery times.

Four of the 14 currently identified substations need to be expanded. The majority of work will be done on Appalachian Power property. Construction will start at the first substation in February 2016. All upgrades should be complete by fall 2017.

Substations

Substations are facilities that direct the flow of electricity. They can either increase or decrease voltage levels before transporting electricity to its next destination.

The substations being worked on for this project are 69 kilovolt substations or higher. As voltage enters from transmission lines, these substations decrease the electricity to a voltage suitable to be distributed to homes and businesses.

Appalachian Power is committed to carefully balancing the energy needs of its customers while protecting the environment and natural beauty of the region. Efforts will be made to minimize the impact during construction.
