Mohraz Lab Colloid Science and Complex Fluids Engineering [email protected] http://csl.eng.uci.edu Research Summary: The Colloid Science Laboratory at UC Irvine investigates a range of fundamental and applied problems related to the physics and engineering of soft materials, colloidal dispersions, and complex fluids. Using state-of- the-art experimental techniques, our goal is to gain a more thorough understanding of how the interparticle interactions, particle geometry, and the suspension physicochemical conditions can be exploited to engineer novel micro- and nanostructured materials from multiphase colloidal suspensions. The applications of our research are broad, ranging from nano-structured composites for fuel cells and batteries to pharmaceutical formulations, coatings, personal care products, foods, and oil industries. Current areas of focus are: Microstructural determinants of nonlinear rheology in colloidal gels and glasses. Self-assembly and dynamics of colloidal particles at fluid/fluid interfaces. Rheology of structured fluids in confinement. Interfacial routes to microstructured materials synthesis. Research Summary: The Colloid Science Laboratory at UC Irvine investigates a range of fundamental and applied problems related to the physics and engineering of soft materials, colloidal dispersions, and complex fluids. Using state-of-the-art experimental techniques, our goal is to gain a more thorough understanding of how the interparticle interactions, particle geometry, and the suspension physicochemical conditions can be exploited to engineer novel micro- and nanostructured materials from multiphase colloidal suspensions. The applications of our research are broad, ranging from nano-structured composites for fuel cells and batteries to pharmaceutical formulations, coatings, personal care products, foods, and oil industries. Current areas of focus are:

• Microstructural determinants of nonlinear rheology in colloidal gels and glasses.

• Self-assembly and dynamics of colloidal particles at fluid/fluid interfaces.

• Rheology of structured fluids in confinement.• Interfacial routes to microstructured materials synthesis.
