The Duomo of Milan is the monument symbol of the city and is situated in the homonym plaza in the

center of Milan.

It is one of the most famous and complex Gothic constructions of the world. As dimensions it is the second

highest church in the world (after the cathedral of Beauvais in France) and third greatest cathedral (after

St.Peter in Vatican and the cathedral in Seville).

Where Duomonow stands, used to be the site of the ancient cathedral of Saint Maria Maggiore.

The Duomo was erected by order of theArchbishop Anthony from Saluzzo and of the gentleman of Milan

Gian Galeazzo Visconti.

In 1418 the major altar was consecrate from pope Martino V and in the 1572 St. Charles Borromeo

consecrated the church even if the construction was not finished yet.

In the XVIII century was built the major steeple on which the goldenMadonna was raised while the façade

was completed 1813 on request of Napoleon, that here he wanted to be crowned king of Italy. For the

whole XIX century the steeples and all the architectural decorations were completed.

In 1943, after the damages suffered during the Second World War, the Duomo was restored to a large

extent and the wooden doors were replaced with others of bronze.

The maintenance of the cathedral is submitted to the Veneranda fabbrica del Duomo, whose

interventions are continuous.

Fiera Milano Rho (Trade Fair)

Founded in 1920, the Trade Fair was set up in Milan to help boost the domestic market in postwar Italy.

Originally there were a number of pavilions and buildings, many of which were destroyed in the Second

World War, although some Art Nouveau buildings are still standing and in good condition.

Since 1985, the Milan Trade Fair has become an important exhibition center, one of the leading facilities in

Europe, and now hosts a large number of specialist international shows.

Each year the Fiera di Milano attracts almost three million visitors and over 30,000 exhibitors.

della Scala, an old church that was built in 1381. In 1943 it was badly bombed and rebuilt three years later.Highlights include the Museo Del Teatro (theatre museum) which was founded in 1913 and is home to a

fine collection of sculpture, paintings and ceramics, and alsoLa Scalas Ballet School which was founded in

1813 and has produced many famous students. The traditional opening night of the opera season takes

place on the 7th December, on the feast day of SantAmbrogio, the patron saint of Milan.

La Scala is among the most-celebrated opera houses in the world.

The theater seats 2,800 and attracts one of the most demanding audiences inItaly.

If you are in Milan out of season you can still visit the Museo Teatrale alla Scala in the same building from

where you can view the inside of the opera theater. The museum honors the greats who performed and

whose works were performed at La Scala including Verdi , Rossini and the great conductor Arturo Toscanini .

Santa Maria delle Grazie

This church was built between 1466 and 1490 by Giuniforte Solari and later partly modified by Bramante

who re-designed the apse, the Tribuna, the Cloister and the Old Sacristy. In the Refectory there is one of

Leonardo da Vincis most famous paintings, the Last Supper. The works of the fresco started in 1495 and

finished in 1498. Unfortunately it started to deteriorate only 20 years after completion, so it had four

restorations: in 1908, 1924, and 1953 (after the bombings of Second World War) and in 1977. Inside the

church there is also the Crucifixion of Donato Montorfano (1495).

15th century Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, is located Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, one of the

greatest masterpieces in the history of art

Sforza Castle

Is one of the symbols of Milan together with the Madonna and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Built

within ten years between 1358 and 1368 under Galeazzo II Visconti. The Castle was partly destroyed in

1447 because of a decision of the Ambrosia Republic; it was rebuilt during Francesco Sforzas period. The

Castle suffered many adversities until 1880 when the government wanted to destroy it. The good sense

prevailed and the Castle was restored under Luca Beltramis direction. The entrance is situated under the

tower of Filarete; on the back you find the Bona di Savoias tower and on the left side the Rocchetta, a

fortified part inside the Castle useful to get refuge during war attacks. The Rocchetta has a three sided

internal portico, and inside its rooms there is the famous Bramantes Argus. The Ducal Court was usually

the residence of the lords. One of the rooms of Ducal Court, the Sala delle Asse is thought to have been

frescoed by Leonardo Da Vinci.
