THIS SECOND YEAR PROJECT CALLED FOR A SPROT AND RECREATION CENTER TO BE LOCATED ON A SITE IN TREMONT, OHIO. THE CENTER WAS MEANT TO A FITNESS CENTER WHICH INCLUDED SQUASH COURTS, A SPA AREA WITH MASSAGE ROOMS, A YOGA ROOM, A SAUNA, A FIRE AND ICE POOL, A COMMUNITY CENTER WITH AN OPEN AREA WHERE EVENTS CAN BE HOSTED, AND A COMMUNITY SWIMMING POOL. THE CITY OF TREMONT IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF A CITY THAT HAS GONE THROUGH AND CONTINUES TO GO THROUGH DRA-MATIC TRANSFORMATION. WITH A CHANGING CITY COMES A NEW POPULATION, NEW BUILDINGS, AND REPURPOSED OLD BUILD-INGS. THIS BUILDING IS MEANT TO REFLECT THAT TRANSFORMATION AND TO ALLOW FOR A CONNECTION OF THE OLD WITH THE NEW. THE BUILDING’S FORM IS MEANT TO SYMBOLIZE THE FORCE THAT IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING THE CITY BY INCORPORTAING UNUSUAL FORMS INTO AN OTHERWISE STATIC FORM. THE BUILDING’S PROGRAM HOWEVER IS MEANT TO SERVE AS A CENTER TO ALLOW FOR THE CITY’S LONG TERM RESIDENTS TO MEET THE NEW GENERATION MOVING INTO TREMONT. WHETHER THAT BE NETWORKING BY MEANS OF A COMMUNITY EVENT HOSTED HERE, BY WORKING OUT TOGETHER OR ENJOYING A GAME OF SQUASH IN THE FITNESS CENTER, OR BY COOLING OFF AND RELAXING IN THE SPA AREA.

THE SITE IS LOCATED IN A LARGELY RESIDENTIAL AREA WITH ONLY A COUPLE PUBLIC BUILDINGS LOCATED NEARBY, INCLUD-ING A SCHOOL AND A CHURCH. AS A RESULT, MAIN ACCESS POINTS NEEDED TO BE CONSIDERED TO AVOID INTERFERING WITH HOMEOWNERS’ PRIVACY.

THE BUILDING IS MEANT TO SYMBOLIZE THE FORCE THAT IS CON-STANTLY TRANSFORMING THE CITY. AS A SYMBOLLIC NOD TO THIS CONCEPT, AN UNUSUAL FORM WAS DESIGNED TO INTERFERE WITH THE OTHERWISE STATIC ELEMENTS OF THE BUILDING.

THE FINAL MASSING PROGRAMMATICALLY ALLOWED FOR AN OUTDOOR GARDEN/POOL SPACE AND WAS OPEN TOWARDS THE SCHOOL PROVIDING A SMALL PUBLIC SQUARE SPACE. WHILE NOT PHYSICALLY CONNECTED, THE DYNAMIC FORMS CREATE A VISUAL CONNECTION TOWARDS ONE ANOTHER.

THE FIRST FLOOR FUNCTIONS LAGELY AS A COMMUNITY CENTER WITH A CULTURE LOUNGE ALLOWING FOR A RANGE OF EVENTS TO BE HOSTED HERE, AND A COM-MUNITY SWIMMING POOL THAT CAN BE CONVERTED INTO AN INDOOR OR OUTDOOR POOL DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF YEAR.

HAND DRAWINGS TOUCHED UP ON PHOTOSHOP

THE THIRD FLOOR SERVES AS THE BUILDING’S SPA. WITH FOUR MASSAGE ROOMS, A SAUNA, A SMALL FIRE AND ICE POOL AND A YOGA ROOM. THERE IS ALSO ROOFTOP SPACE TO ALLOW FOR THE INDI-VIDUAL TO GET SOME FRESH AIR FROM THIS LEVEL.

THE SECOND FLOOR SERVES AS THE BUILDING’S FITENSS CENTER. WITH FOUR SQUASH COURTS AND AN OPEN ROOM FOR GYM EQUIPMENT.

A THIRD YEAR PROJECT CALLED FOR AN ADDITION TO THE LOCAL COLLEGE LOCATED IN PIAZZA BRUNELLESCHI IN FLORENCE, ITALY, TORRE NUOVA TAKES ITS INFLUENCE FROM THE CITY’S CONTEXT WITH ITS MEDIEVAL TOWER BUILDING INFLUENCED STYLE. LIKE THE MEDIEVAL TOWER, THIS PROJECT TOWERS OVER ITS SURROUNDING CONTEXT. STAIRS SPIRAL AROUND THE TOWER AS STUDY SPACES, TO REACH THE TOP WHERE ONE CAN VIEW THE CITY FROM AN EXTERIOR PLATFORM. WINDOWS ARE PLACED MINIMALLY TO ALLOW FOR SOME VIEWS, AND TO MAXIMIZE NATURAL LIGHTING. HOWEVER IN A MODERN CONTEXT A TOWER BUILDING SERVES A MUCH DIFFERENT PURPOSE AND HAS MANY DIFFERENT PRIORITIES. THE STAIRS SPIRALING AROUND THE BUILDING ARE VETHE BUILDING ARE VERY WIDE AND CONNECTED TO FLOORS AT EVERY HALF LEVEL CREATING A SENSE OF OPENNESS AND AIRI-NESS WHILE MAKING IT EASY FOR STUDENTS TO SOCIALIZE WITH ONE ANOTHER. THE FACADE, WHILE ON THE OUTSIDE IT DE-PICTS A FEELING OF HEAVINESS WITH ITS FEW WINDOWS AND DARK SKIN, IT IN FACT ALLOWS FOR THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF NATURAL LIGHT AND VIEWS DUE TO A GRATED METAL FACADE. THE LOCATIONS OF THE WINDOWS ONLY MAXIMIZE THE LIGHT AND VIEWS FURTHER. SIMILARLY, THE MAIN BODY OF THE BUILDING IS BASED OFF OF A HISTORICAL CONTEXT FROM THIS ERA AS WELL. OFTEN TIMES BUILDINGS (SPECIFICALLY CHURCHES) WERE DESIGNED AS A SHELL, AND A THICK SCULPTURAL FACADE WAS PLACED IN FRONT OF IT. THE NORTHERN ELEVATION OF TORRE NUOVA IS SIMILAR IN THAT IT ITSELF HAS A THICK FACADE. HOWEVER, LIKE THE TOWER, IT NEEDED TO BE REDESIGNED TO FIT A MODERN CONTEXT. IT IS DIFFERENT IN THAT THE FACADE IS ACCESSIBLE, BECAUSE IT CONSISTS OF A STAIRWAY LEADING FOM THE OUTSIDE GROUND LEVEL TO THE BACK OF THE AUDITORIUM, AS WELL AS AN INTERIOR HALLWAY LEADING TO SIDE ENTRIES OF THE AUDITORIUM. IT IS TOPPED OFF WITH A LONG RIBBON WINDOW ALALLOWING FOR SOME NATURAL LIGHT TO ENTER THE HALL, WITHOUT DISRUPTING THE AUDITORIUM. THE OLD SCULPTURAL FA-CADES WERE CONNECTED TO THE BUILDING ONLY BY THE MAIN DOORS AND WINDOWS, BUT FOR THE MOST PART IT FEELS LIKE A SEPARATE ENTITY. THE FACADE OF TORRE NUOVA IS MUCH MORE CONNECTED PHYSICALLY AND SENSUALLY TO THE REMAINDER OF THE BUILDING.

TORRE NUOVA

A VIEW FROM THE INTERIOR OF THE TOWER. IT SHOWS THAT THE FACADE WAS DESIGNED TO ALLOW THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF DAYLIGHTING IN AND TO CREATE VIEWS OF THE HISTORIC CITY FROM NEARLY EVERY ANGLE.

THE GROUND LEVEL, BEING THE MOST PUBLIC PART OF THE BUILDING, LINKS THE BUILDING TO THE STREET LEVEL, WITH A MAIN CAFE FACING TOWARDS THE PIAZZA. A SMALL LECTURE HALL IS ACCESIBLE IN THE BACK OF THE BUILDING FOR EDUCA-TIONAL PURPOSES.

THE MEDIEVAL PIAZZA OFTEN HAD A SCULP-TURE OR FOUNTAIN IN THE CENTER OF IT, OFTEN DEPICTING A BIBLICAL OR MYTHICAL CHARACTER, OR SOMEONE IMPORTANT TO THE TIME. IN TODAY’S WORLD, MORE EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON THE INDIVIDUAL. THIS FOUNTAIN IS DESIGNED SO THAT A PERSON CAN BE A PART OF THE SCULPTURE THEMSETHEMSELVES THROUGH AN OPEN “CAVE-LIKE” FEA-TURE.

PICNIC TABLES ARE PLACED THROUGHOUT THE SITE. EACH CON-TAINS TWO SPOTS FOR TREES TO GROW OUT OF. THIS IS DESIGNED TO LOOK LIKE THE BUILDING, WITH THE TREES REPRESENTING THE TOWER AND THE TABLE REPRESENTING THE BOBODY OF THE BUILDING.

THE SECOND FLOOR LEVEL IS WHERE THE STUDY TOWER BEGINS. HALF LEVELS SERVE A FUNCTION ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP, STUDENTS CAN FIND A SPOT TO SIT DOWN AND READ OR WORK ON ASSIGN-MENTS. THE ROOFTOP IS ALSO ACCESSIBLE, AND SERVES AS A LARGELY PUBLIC EXTEN-SION OF THE SQUARE, COMPLETE WITH BOCCE BALL COURTS.

LEVEL 5.5 IS THE TOP OF THE BUILDING, WITH A SMALL INDOOR AREA THAT SERVES AS A STUDY ROOM, AND AN OUTDOOR AREA THAT SERVES AS A VIEWING PLATFORM TO TAKE IN THE VIEWS OF THE HISTORIC CENTER IN FLORENCE.

THE FIRST FLOOR LEVEL IS EASILY ACES-SIBLE FROM THE STREET LEVEL BY MEANS OF A LARGE ARCHITECTURAL STAIR DI-RECTING AN INDIVIDUAL TOWARDS THE MAIN AUDITORIUM. THIS SPACE SERVES AS AN EVENT SPACE, MEANT TO BE MORE EASILY OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

A THIRD YEAR PROJECT CALLED FOR A RESIDENTIAL BUILDING TO BE PLACED ON A WATER FRONT SITE ON OCRACOKE ISLAND, NORTH CAROLINA. THE PROJECT FIRST CALLED FOR A 12’ X 16’ COMPACT HOUSE COMPLETE WITH A RESTROOM, SLEEPING AREA, COOKING AREA AND EATING AREA. THE PROJECT’S NEXT REQUIREMENT WAS TO DESIGN A CO-HOUSE AND OUTDOOR KITCHEN FOR FOUR PEOPLE. THE CONCEPT BEHIND MOST COMPACT HOUSES IS TO PULL THE OCCUPANT OUTSIDE AND TO BECOME CLOSER TO NATURE. COMPACT HOUSES CONTAIN ALL THE BASIC AMENITIES REQUIRED TO LIVE COMFORTABLEY WHILE ELIMINATING THE UNNECES-SARY CLUTTER THAT HAS BECOME COMMON IN MODERN LIFE. THIS CONCEPT WAS PULLED THROUGH TO THE CO-HOUSE. IN ORDER TO PULL PEOPLE OUTSIDE, THE MAIN KITCHEN AND LIVING ROOM ARE LOCATED ON A PORCH OUTSIDE, COVERED ONLY BY A ROOF. WHEN WEATHER DOES NOT PERMIT, THERE IS A SALLER KITCHEN AND LIVING ROOM LOCATED INDOORS, WITH A LARGE WINDOW COVERING THE WESTERN WALL CREATING A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE SITE AND THE OCEAN. PASSIVE STRATEGIES ARE ALSO INCLUDED TO LOWER ENERGY USE IN THE BUILDING. OVERHANGS ARE STRATEGICALY PLACED OVER WINDOWS THAT RECEIVE DIRECT SUNLIGHT IN THE WARMER MONTHS, WHILE ALLOWING THE SUN TO ENTER IN THE COLDER MONTHS. WINDOWS ARE ALSO STRATEGICALLY PLACED TO ALLOW THE HEAVY WESTWARD WINDS FROM THE WATER TO NATURALLY VENTILATE AND COOL THE BUILDING.

OCRACOKE ISLAND CO-HOUSE

THE COMPACT HOUSE ITSELF HAD TO FIT IN A FRAME THAT ALREADY EXISTED ON THE SITE. ATTENTION NEEDED TO BE FOCUSED ON WINDOW AND PORCH ORIEN-TATION TO ACHIEVE THE OPTIMAL AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT IN THE HOUSE. THE IMAGES TO THE RIGHT SHOW THE HOUSE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS, WHERE IT RE-CEIVES MINIMAL DIRECT SUNGLIGHT TO AVOID OVERHEATING THE HOUSE.

THE THIRD FLOOR IS THE HOUSE’S PRI-MARY GATHERING SPACE. IT INCLUDES AN INDOOR KITCHEN OVERLOOKING THE SITE AND THE WATER, AND AN OUTDOOR LIVING/DINING ROOM CENTERED AROUND THE CENTRAL FIRELACE THAT GOES THROUGH THE WHOLE HOUSE.

THE SECOND FLOOR IS THE MOST PRIVATE FLOOR. THE SECOND FLOOR CONTAINS FOUR BEDROOMS WHICH ARE DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO TWO BATHROOMS.

THE FIRST FLOOR IS ENTIRELY OPEN TO THE OUTDOORS BECAUSE THE HOUSE IS SET ON STILTS DUE TO NORTH CAROLINA’S FREQENT FLOODING. THIS CREATES AN OP-PORTUNITY FOR PARKING AS WELL AS A SHADED OUTDOOR KITCHEN FOR GRILLING AND RELAXING OUTDOORS.

FOR A FOURTH YEAR STUDIO PROJECT, KENT STATE UNIVERSITY ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS PARTNERED WITH THE CITY OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO TO CREATE CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS FOR UNDERUTILIZED SITES IN THE CITY. THE FIRST PART OF THE PROJECT REQUIRED RESEARCHING AND DEVELOPING A BUILDING PROGRAM TO FIT INTO THE URBAN LANDSCAPE OF YOUNGSTOWN. THIS PARTICULAR INFILL SITE IS LOCATED ON WEST FEDERAL STREET, AND CONSISTS OF NOTHING SAVE A FREESTANDING HIS-TORIC NEO-CLASSICAL FACADE. THE BUILDING PROGRAM IS MEANT TO CREATE A CENTER IN YOUNGSTOWN WHERE INDIVIDUALS CAN CREATE AND DISCOVER NEW MUSIC THROUGH REHEARSAL, RECORDING AND PERFORMANCE SPACES, WHILE MAINTAINING A CLEAR CONNECTION TO ITS PAST. THE EXISTING FREESTANDING FACADE IS THE SITE’S ONLY LIVING CONNECTION TO ITS PAST. ORIGINALLY A STATE THEATRE DESIGNED TO SHOWCASE MOVIES, THE THEATRE WAS CONVERTED INTO A NIGHT CLUB IN THE 1970s WHERE FAMOUS ROCK N’ ROLL ACTS SUCH AS AC/DC, THE RAMONES AND LOU REED HAVE PERFORMED. MUSIC IS A CLEAR DRIVING ENERGY IN THIS SPACE. THE MAIN LEVEL FEATURES A SMALL RESTAURANT AND BAR TO DRAW PEOPLE IN WHO ARE ENJOYING THE NIGHTLIFE YOUNGSTOWN HAS TO OFFER. THE MAIN LEVEL EASILY CONNECTS TO RECORDING AND REHEARSAL SPACES BELOW, AND A PRI-MARY PERFORMANCE THEATRE SPACE ABOVE. IN ADDITION TO THE PRIMARY PERFORMANCE SPACE ON THE, THE FRONT FACADE FEATURES AN OUTDOOR STAGE TO ENCOURAGE THE SPONTANEITY OF MUSIC. FUTHERMORE, THE ROOFTOP ITSELF IS ACCES-SIBLE, FUNCTIONING AS A SEPARATE MUSIC BAR ITSELF, WITH BAR AND TABLE SEATING PLACED AROUND A PERFORMANCE STAGE OVERLOOKING THE ALLEY AND BUILDINGS BEHIND IT, AND VIEWS OF YOUNGSTOWN BEYOND. WITH FEW MUSIC CENTERS IN YOUNGSTOWN, THIS PROJECT IS INTENDED TO ALLOW STUDENTS AT YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNI-VERSITY TO HAVE A PLACE TO ESCAPE AND UNWIND, WHILE BOTH CONTRIBUTING TO AND ENJOYING WHAT THE MUSIC SCENE IN YOUNGSTOWN HAS TO OFFER.

STATE THEATRE MUSIC CENTER

THE PRESERVATION OF THE ORIGINAL FACADE WAS AN IMPORTANT DRIVING METHOD IN DEVELOP-ING THE DESIGN OF THE PROJECT. THE NEW BUILD-ING ULTIMATELY ENDED UP FRAMING THE ORIGINAL FACADE IN ORDER TO EMPHASIZE ITS IMPORTANCE.

THE PROGRAMS IN THIS DESIGN ARE WHAT DE-TERMINE THE DESIGN AND LAYOUT OF THE BUILDING. EACH OF THE PROGRAMS HAVE A DIFFERENT SOUND REQUIREMENT, BOTH IN WHAT THEY PRODUCE AND WHAT THEY RECEIVE. THE MUSIC VENUE AND STUDIO SPACES PRODUCE THE MOST SOUND, THERE-FORE REQUIRE SOUNDPROOFING TO AFECT THE RESTAURANT AND MUSEUM SPACES AS LITTLE AS POS-SIBLE.

THE STATE THEATRE HAS A RICH HISTORY. OPENED IN 1927 AS A PALACE CINEMA THAT SHOWCASED FILMS OF THE ERA. IT SERVED ITS PURPOSE UNTIL THE 1970s WHEN IT WAS CON-VERTED INTO A NIGHT CLUB UNTIL THEY CLOSED FOR GOOD IN 1988. THE PALACE WAS DEMOLISHED IN 2008 LEAVING ONLY THE FACADE, AND IF NOTHING IS DONE TO PRESERVE IT, IT IS SLATED FOR DEMOLITION AS WELL.

LOCATED IN AN INFILL SITE, PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES WER LIMITED. HOWEVER A FEW TECH-NIQUES MADE IT POSSIBLE TO HELP NATURALLY LIGHT AND VENTILATE THE BUILDING. LIGHTING: WINDOWS ORIENTED TOWARDS THE SUN HELIOSTAT LIGHT TUBEST BRING IN LIGHT FROM THE ROOF TO THE BASEMENT VENTILATION: OPEN FLOOR PLANS AND WINDOWS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE BUILDING VENTILATION TUBES PLACED IN FLOOR SLABS TO BRING IN FRESH AIR

SECTIONAL RENDERING THROUGH THE BUILDING

BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF WEST FEDERAL STREET IN YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO. THE SITE IS LOCATED SOUTH OF YOUNGSTOWN UNIVERSITY IN THE VICINITY OF OTHER RESTAURANTS, BARS AND MUSIC VENUES.

FOR A FOURTH YEAR STUDIO PROJECT, KENT STATE UNIVERSITY ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS PARTNERED WITH THE CITY OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO TO CREATE CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS FOR UNDERUTILIZED SITES IN THE CITY. THE FIRST PART OF THE PROJECT REQUIRED RESEARCHING AND DEVELOPING A BUILDING PROGRAM TO FIT INTO THE URBAN LANDSCAPE OF YOUNGSTOWN. THE SECOND PART OF THE PROJECT WAS AN ADAPTIVE REUSE PROJECT AND INVOLVED APPLYING THE PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPED PRO-GRAM TO AN UNDERUTILIZED EXISTING BUILDING IN YOUNGSTOWN. THIS SITE IS LOCATED ON THE CORNER OF FEDERAL STREET AND PHELPS STREET AND CONSISTS OF THREE BUILDINGS. THE BUILDINGS INCLUDE THE PEGGY ANN BUILDING WHICH CONTAINS A COFFEE SHOP, A CANDY SHOP AND A BALLROOM. ROBERTO’S RISTORANTE ITALIANO IS A RESTAURANT, AND TWO GUY’S CLOTHING STORE IS NOW ABANDONED SINCE THE COMPANY HAS BEEN RELOCATED TO ANOTHER SITE IN YOUNGSTOWN. LIKE THE STATE THEATRE MUSIC CENTER, THE PEGGY ANN MUSIC CENTER IS MEANT TO CREATE A MUSICAL CENTER IN YOUNGSTOWN WHERE INDIVIDALS CAN CREATE AND DISCOVER NEW MUSIC THROUGH THE REHEARSAL, RECORDING AND PERFOR-MANCE OF MUSIC. THE COFFEE SHOP, CANDY SHOP AND BALLROOM WERE PULLED THROUGH TO THE NEW ADAPTIVE REUSE PROJECT. THE RES-TAURANT WAS MOVED FROM THE ORIGINAL LOCATION OF ROBERTO’S RISTORANTE ITALIANO TO TWO GUY’S CLOTHING, AND CHANGED FROM AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT TO A MUSIC BAR / RESTAURANT. ROBERTO’S RISTORANTE ITALIANO, BEING LOCATED IN BETWEEN OF THE OTHER TWO BUILDINGS, WAS REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH A LARGE ATRIUM ALLOWING NATURAL LIGHT TO LUMINATE THE SPACE. THREE LEVELS OF PERFORMANCE SPACES ARE ALSO MEANT TO DRAW IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF CROWDS. THE THEATRE SPACE CREATES A CROWD OF A DEDICATED MUSIC FANATICS, WHO WILL KNOW ABOUT A SHOW BEFOREHAND. THE MUSIC BAR DRAWS IN INDIVIDUALS WHO DESIRE TO GO OUT TO SOCIALIZE AND DISCOVER MUSIC THEY MIGHT NOT HAVE PREVIOUSLY KNOWN ABOUT. THE EXTERIOR “PUBLIC SQUARE” SPACE IS FOR THE MOST CASUAL CROWD. INDIVIDUALS WALKING DOWN THE STREET MIGHT SEE SOMEONE PERFORMING HERE, AND ENTER THE SPACE TO CHECK IT OUT. THE JUXTAPOSITION OF THE NEW AND OLD CREATES DIVERSE WAYS OF EXPERIENCING THE ENERGY OF MUSIC.

THE PROGRAM IN THIS DESIGN INCORPORATES THE EXIST-ING PROGRAMS, INCLUDING THE COFFEE SHOP, CANDY SHOP, AND BALLROOM (AND IN SOME SENSE THE RESTAURANT WHICH HAS BEEN SLIGHTLY ALTERED AND RELOCATED AS A MUSIC BAR) ALLOW THE BUILDING’S EXISTING CROWD TO EX-PERIENCE MUSIC AS WELL AS THE MORE MUSIC ORIENTED CROWD THAT THE BUILDING INTENDS TO BRING IN

HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPH OF THE PEGGY ANN BUILDING. THE BUILDING HAS REMAINED LARGELY UNCHANGED SINCE THIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS TAKEN, WITH THE ONLY MAJOR CHANGES BEING FROM THE BUILDING’S PROGRAM.THE WOODEN BOARDS IN THE CORNER OF THE BUILDING CREATE A SENSE OF INCOMPLETION IN THE BUILDING.

SECOND FLOOR - THE MAIN THEATRE SPACE IS ADDED ONTO THE SECOND FLOOR LEVEL IN THE NEW ADDITION. THE PEGGY ANN BUILDING’S BALLROOM REMAINS HERE AS WELL, NOW OVER LOOKING THE MAIN ATRIUM.FIRST FLOOR - THE EXISTING COFFEE SHOP REMAINS IN THE PEGGY ANN BUILDING, BUT IS NOW CONNECTED TO THE CENTRAL ATRIUM. THE CANDY SHOP BELOW IS ALSO MADE MORE ACCESSIBLE FROM THIS LEVEL. FURTHERMORE A MUSIC BAR / RESTAURANT IS CONNECTED ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ATRIUM.BASEMENT LEVEL - OTHER THAN THE CANDY SHOP CONNECTED TO THE FIRST FLOOR, THE BASEMENT LEVEL SERVES AS THE MUSIC STUDIO, WITH ONE SIDE DEDICATED TO REHEARSAL SPACES AND THE OTHER TO RECORDING SPACES.

S.K. INDUSTRIES OVERHANG

BEFORE

THE PROPOSED CONCEPT REQUIRED THE EXTENSION OF THE OVERHANG OVER THE SIDEWALK SO THAT DURING WINTER MONTHS SNOW WOULD FALL AWAY FROM THE WALK-WAY RATHER THAN ONTO IT AS IT HAS BEEN DOING IN PAST YEARS. IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN A STEEP ENOUGH SLOPE TO ALLOW FOR THE SNOW TO FALL OFF, THE SLOPE AND LENGTH OF THE PARTITION NEEDED TO BE EXTENDED. THE SHAPE WAS DESIGNED DESIGNED TO CHANGE FROM A PENTAGON INTO A TRIANGLE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE CHANGE IN SLOPE.

THE CONCEPT FOR THE OVERHANG KEEPS AS MUCH OF THE EXISTING OVERHANG AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO KEEP THE COSTS DOWN. THE EXISTING COLUMNS REMAIN, AS WELL AS PARTS OF THE PARTITIONS. SINCE THE OVERHANG IS EX-TENDED OUTWARD, ADDITIONAL COLUMNS ARE NEEDED TO SUPPORT IT SRUCTURALLY. THE OVERHANG IS ALSO EXTENDED TO COVER THE COR-NERS OF THE BUILDING AS OPPOSED TO THE PREVIOUS DESIGN WHER THEY SLOPED INWARD, EXPOSING THE BUILDING’S BRICK CORNERS.

IN THE SUMMER OF 2014, S.K. INDUSTRIES OWNER STEVEN KEKEDY SR. REQUESTED A CONCEPTUAL DRAWING FOR A REPLACEMENT FOR THE OVERHANG ON THE FRONT FACADE OF THE MACHINE SHOP IN NEWBURY, OHIO. THE PREEXISTING OVERHANG ONLY COVERED ABOUT ONE THIRD OF THE WALKWAY LEAD-ING TO THE ENTRANCE. THIS BECOMES A PROBLEM IN WINTER MONTHS WHEN SNOW FALLS DIRECTLY ON THE WALKWAY, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO ACCESS THE FRONT ENTRYWAY. AS A RESULT, FREQUENT SHOVELING IS REQUIRED THROUGHOUT THE DAY, RESULTING IN LOWER PRODUCTION IN THE MACHINE SHOP. THE PROPOSED CONCEPT CALLS TO PRESERVE AS MUCH OF THE PREEXISTING OVERHANG AS POSSIBLE. THE PEDIMENTS OVER THE DOORS, ARE IMPOR-TANT ELEMENTS IN MAKING THE ENTRYWAY VISUALLY ACCESSIBLE, AND AS A RESULT THEIR BASIC FRAMES ARE INCLUDED IN THE NEW DESIGN. THE FOUR COLUMNS HOLDING UP THE PEDIMENTS ALSO REMAIN UNTOUCHED, AND THREE MORE ARE ADDED TO SUPPORT THE NEW OVERHANG WHICH EXTENDS EN-TIRELY OVER THE WALKWAY. THE DRAWINGS WERE THEN SHOWN TO GINGRICH ROOFING WHO REVIEWED THEM AND BASED THEIR DESIGN OFF OF THEM. CONSTRUCTION ON THE OVERHANG CONCLUDED IN DECEMBER 2015.
