Roxanne Legere is a recent graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana. She received an Honors Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Arts with a concentration in New Media and Animation. While getting her degree, she was a member of the Kappa Pi fraternity (Eta Nu Chapter), and she also exhibited her work at the college and outside of the college. Her most recent work has involved incorporating digital video with sculptural elements. Specifically, she has been focused on the changes of a culture’s overall state of mind as impacted by its advancements. This can be seen in her piece Agoraphobic where the viewer is placed in a claustrophobic environment in order to show the anxiety of our culture towards leaving our comfort zones, especially our homes. She is interested in getting the viewer to question their role in our contemporary society. The idea that a society is impacted greatly by its advancements is one that she will continue to explore and develop and find new ways to reflect back to the viewer.

Artist Statement Growing up in an age that privileges technology, I am led to question the effects of our rapid expansion on our overall state of mind and our approach to the world around us. We are often times engulfed by our gadgets to an extent much further than can be mentally andemotionally healthy. By placing interfaces, such as our smart phones, our video game systems and our internet capabilities at such a high level of importance, we are in a way being consumed by them. Our way of seeing and interacting with the world around us is severely altered by this immersion into a virtual way of thinking. The more we allow ourselves to incorporate these advancements into our everyday lives, the further we are removed from the present. This prevents us from being able to deal with each other and our realities and, as a result, to avoid them. Using this technology in the form of video and television points out these issues in a relatable way, making the viewer more susceptible to the artwork’s context and intention. The objective is to cause the viewer to question their role in this world of virtual vs. reality.

The focus of the work is an encapsulating video; to make the experience more immersing it is designed for only a single person’s viewership at a time. The vid-eo monitor and speakers are mounted on the inside of the large console TV. The TV has had all of its internal components removed and has been mounted to the gallery wall. This style of TV was chosen not only for its size but also for its furni-ture-like qualities. These televisions were originally designed to rest on the floor bringing a feeling of permanence. It is relevant to elevate this object from the floor and mount it to the wall, as this enables the viewer to question its re-positioning and mimics our contemporary wall-mounted TVs. A hole is cut into the bottom of the TV for the viewer to stick their head inside and view the video. This action in itself reflects the tendency of our culture to retreat indoors. To build on this idea of comfort indoors, the inside of the TV has been made to resemble a typical room in a home, with wallpaper, molding and a popcorn ceiling. Once inside, the viewer en-counters an experience that is manipulated to induce an uneasy, surreal, first-per-son experience. The intention is to immerse the viewer into the point of view of the character in the video.
