Of the 3700 burials in the Pioneer and Military Memorial Cemetery only 600 graves are marked with headstones, about two thirds of those that are marked include an inscription. e rest are left unknown and forgotten. e burials that are known become voids in the earth scattered around those left forgotten who are lost in the mass of the earth.

Taking this concept into the design I am memorializing the new burials by making a mass above the earth with a planter: where water or assorted wildowers will be the life representing the deceased. To memorialize the forgotten, similar planters lower to the ground will be lled with black river rocks and either a tree or water to ensure that life will be memorializing them once again as well. e planters representing the new will be scattered and surrounded by those representing the old to show the relationship of what exists in the Pioneers and Military Memorial Cemetery, however in this case the forgotten become known as well.

e planters form will be carried throughout the site to unite it as whole. In locations where the planters are no longer meant for burials they will be a shorter height and have cactus in them rather than owers in them to show the dierentiation of public vs. private space. e trees surrounding the more public areas will also be dierent from those surrounding the more private burials, to show the sense of dierentiation but also keeping with the similar form.

All through the site materials and spaces will tie back to, and memorialize the forgotten. roughout the site there will be details of this relationship of the known and the unknown, mass and void, black and white.

With the Urban sprawl of the greater Phoenix area, a sense of community and overlap is lost. e uptown site is a dead zone with richness surrounding it, providing an opportunity to revive this sense of overlap and connect the site to its community and the greaterPhoenix area.
