Midterm  Assignment  

  For  my  Mid-­‐term,  the  visual  aesthetic  I  chose  was  a  black-­‐and-­‐white  look  

along  with  a  smoky  haze.    The  process  that  brought  me  to  this  conclusion  started  

with  picturing  a  scene  of  Joseph  H.  Lewis’s  “The  Big  Combo”.  In  this  film  I  remember  

seeing  many  scenes  with  fog  or  steamy  backgrounds  that  caught  my  attention  as  

pretty  crafty.  The  feeling  I  pictured  from  the  scene  was  a  solitarian  state.  From  

getting  this  feeling  I  then  searched  my  music  for  a  song  including  feelings  of  

solitude.  I  was  glad  to  be  able  to  use  the  lyrics  from  a  personal  favorite  band.  The  

song  I  chose  was  Tame  Impala’s  “Solitude  Is  Bliss.”  This  song  describes  how  one  can  

feel  complete  happiness  even  when  they  are  alone  at  times.  I  pictured  how  I  feel  

when  I  listen  to  music  or  go  for  a  solo  walk.  With  the  visual  aesthetic  in  mind,  I  

planned  my  pictures  to  be  black-­‐and-­‐white  and  tell  a  story  that  relates  to  feelings  of  

blissful  solitude.  I  feel  that  my  pictures  turned  out  great  because  of  how  they  relate  

to  the  lyrics  and  match  the  look  similar  to  Joseph  H.  Lewis’s.    The  bench  I  used  was  

heated  which  caused  it  to  billow  a  smoky  atmosphere  around  it.    This  was  perfect  

scenery  for  my  photos  since  it  felt  like  such  a  relaxing  spot.  The  photos  in  turn  

describe  how  the  character  enjoys  being  alone,  listening  to  music,  smoking,  and  just  

relaxing.  I  was  quite  pleased  with  my  final  outcome  for  this  project.
