Memento Opening

Memento Opening

Introduction

Memento isa 2000 American neo-noir psychological thriller film directed by ChristopherNolan.

The screenplay was written by Nolan based on his younger brother Jonathan Nolan's short story "MementoMori

It stars Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and JoePantoliano.

Titles

The title colour used is a clear cool blue, and the letters are spaced out to fill out most of the space. The effect of this is that it stand out.In addition the picture of the blood stained wall behind the title suggests that the memento is the picture. This is an ominous idea to have a keepsake of what seems to be a murder. Thus illustrating themes of the genre: death and psychopathy.Cinematography

Characteristics are shown by firstly suspense and unknown/unexplained circumstances (many of the films of this genre have unexplained actions or reasons, which creates a sense of mystery).

Furthermore the picture itself is a mystery. It clearly shows the blood, which suggests death (another major theme of a psych-thriller) and something blue, which is unidentifiable. At the beginning there is a long close up of this picture. Its consequently long that audiences might believe the scene to be a picture. The effect of this elongated scene portrays the characteristics of the genre, psych-thriller.Cinematography

Here is a low angle close up of the characters face. His expression is calm and collected (which is surprising considering he just shot a person). The genres characteristic of psychology is clearly shown here This character's calm expression and the blood stains on his face present a mental difference in the character/ shows that he is different or has a different perception. This angle was used to clearly express this.Sound

The main music is that of a low continues note, which gives a sense of mystery. The only other sound you can hear is towards the end were the sounds of his actions suddenly intensified to be noticed, for example the flash of his camera. The effect of this is that it makes the audience focus on the little details which they would normally miss. Editing

One technique used was playing the scene backwards. The image disappearing was the first clue to this, but since not much clue was given up until towards the end this gave a sense of mystery. Also because most of the scene was prolonged, it gave a sense of suspense and even more mystery. Editing

There was a series of shots which were specific objects were closed up (an example is the glasses). At first there is mystery to what the objects significance were.Because there was a long build-up at the beginning, the ending was unpredictable (with the sudden pace change and fast cuts through scenes). It suddenly created an overwhelming scene, where the audience build the pieces together and they see the murder.Setting

Thesetting is an abandoned room, its rundown and clearly falling apart. The colours are dull, which sets the scene of something bad happening. Also this room is a typical place for a murder to happen, which sets up the scene perfectly.Characters

Thescene is of the main character taking a picture of the murder he committed.

His calm face and actions sets him up to be the perfect villain of a psych-thriller, as his action are bloodcurdling as its not the normal thing to do. Narrative

The story is of a man who kills a person and takes a photo (suggesting to be a memento). For the man to do this is interesting and frightening as most people wouldnt take pictures of a murder as a memento. This seems to be a typical psych-thriller film, as it contains the many themes: death, perception and battle of the mind.
