Welcome to This Season at the MetIn addition to a phenomenal roster of exhibitions — groundbreaking shows featuring Cubism, the Renaissance, the ancient Near East, Cézanne, El Greco, and more — this season brings the much-anticipated reopening in September of the Museum’s outdoor plaza. With new fountains, open space, and vibrant greenery, the David H. Koch Plaza greets visitors with a welcoming face and is destined to rank among the world’s great public outdoor spaces. Also new this season is a mobile app that gives Members and other frequent visitors a simple way to stay connected with the Met from anywhere. No matter where you look — in our galleries, online, or from our iconic front steps — it’s an exciting fall that you’ll not want to miss. Come visit soon.

Assyria to Iberia at the Dawn of the Classical Age
This landmark exhibition traces the deep roots of interaction between the ancient Near East and the lands along the shores of the Mediterranean, and their impact on the artistic traditions that developed in the region. Focusing on the early first millennium B.C.—the age of the Assyrian empire, Phoenician expansion across the Mediterranean, and Homer’s Odyssey—it draws on the world’s leading museum collections, bringing together works of art including monumental sculptures and wall reliefs, masterfully carved ivories, fine metalwork, and luxurious jewelry.
Major support provided by The Hagop Kevorkian Fund, the Stavros Niarchos
Foundation, and Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman. Additional support provided by
an Anonymous Foundation and the Friends of Inanna. Supported by
an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

Cubism: The Leonard A. Lauder Collection
Cubism, the most influential art movement of the early 20th century, still resonates today. It destroyed traditional illusionism in painting and radically changed the way we see the world. The Leonard A. Lauder Collection, unsurpassed in its holdings of Cubist art, is now a promised gift to the Museum. On the occasion of this exhibition, the Collection is being shown in public for the first time—80 paintings, collages, drawings, and sculpture by the four preeminent Cubist artists: Georges Braque (French, 1882–1963), Juan Gris (Spanish, 1887–1927), Fernand Léger (French, 1881–1955), and Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973).
Supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

Paul Cézanne’s paintings, drawings, and watercolors of his wife and most painted model, Hortense Fiquet, profoundly inflected his portrait practice for more than two decades. They record a complex working dialogue, one which this unprecedented exhibition will explore on many levels. The related installation Paul Cézanne: Drawings and Watercolors from the Metropolitan’s Collection is also on view.

The new season features dazzling, site-specific, gallery-based programs, talks and panels with leading thinkers who place the Met at the center of relevant contemporary issues, and world-class performers who create programs specific to the Met. For specific events, see pages 17, 18 and 19.
