You and your loved ones can shoot some hoops, play squash or racquetball, kick the soccer ball around, or cool off with some laps in the pool. Youth ages 13-17 can participate in resistance and cardiovascular training after a Teen Orientation, and don’t forget about the Instruction Pool, open 12–4 PM during Family Weekends. Intramural SportsThe Intramural Sports Program provides a variety of leagues and tournaments throughout the year to all students, faculty, staff and recreation center members. These contests emphasize mental, social, and physical well-being. Intramural sports builds a community atmosphere for the university through friendly competition. Good sportsmanship is valued above all else.

Note: The sign-up deadline for each sport is the closing time of the Recreation Center on the date stated. All captain’s and organizational meetings are mandatory for competition.

Free AgentsAny person who does not have a team to partici-pate on can sign up as a free agent. The Assistant Director for IM’s, Sport Clubs & Summer Camps will compile the pool of free agents and any teams that are seeking extra members will be able to pick up a free agent from the pool before the start of the league. The remaining free agents will then be placed on free agent teams by the Assistant Direc-tor for IM’s, Sport Clubs & Summer Camps.

Aquatic and Safety ClassesThree Lanes in the Busbey Natatorium are available daily for lap swim. Hours are from opening of the Recreation Center to 1 hour before closing. Occasional weekends are closed due to swim meets. Swimming Lessons, Scuba Classes, American Red Cross Certifi cations for Lifeguard Training and Water Safety Instructor are offered this Fall.

Private Swim LessonsSwim lessons can be done as a one-on-one private session or in a small group of up to 3 people in a semi-private session. All lessons are 30 minutes long. The cost covers up to three participants. Lessons are scheduled based on pool and instructor availability; some lessons may occur in large pool.Private M: $25 NM: $30Semi-Private M: $30 NM: $35

Group Learn to SwimSwim lessons are taught according to the American Red Cross standards. Instructors are experienced and certifi ed Water Safety instructors. Ratio of student to instructor is kept low for optimum learning. M:$40 NM $50

Parent & Tot (walking – 3 years)A program designed for children 1 year of age to 3 years of age. The objective is to get a good, safe, fun start in the water with a trusted adult. Only one child per adult. Adults do not need to know how to swim, but should be prepared to go underwater.

Parent and Preschool (ages 3 – 5 years)A program designed for children 3 - 5 1/2 years of age. The objective is to help the child explore the water, gain confi dence and learn basic skills in the water with a trusted adult. Only one child per adult. Adults do not need to know how to swim, but should be prepared to go underwater.

Preschool 1, 2 & 3 (ages 3 – 5 years)A program designed for the motor abilities of the 3 1/2 - 5 1/2 year old child. The child must have attended at least one Parent and Pre-school or Parent and Tot program. Comfort with an instructor without a parent in the room is essential. Skills taught are consistent with Level 1 and Level 2.

Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills (age 6 and over)Balance, comfort, and independence in the water are the primary focus. Rhythmic breathing is introduced. Safe entries and exits as well as arm and leg movements through the water are performed. Lessons are held in the shallow water.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills (age 6 and over)Balance and movement through the water are the primary focus. Changing position from front to back fl oat, beginner stroke with rhythmic breathing, sculling and fl utter kick on back are performed. Lessons are held in shallow water.

Level 3 Stroke Development (age 6 and over)Development of Front Crawl and Elementary Backstroke is primary focus. Deep water skills including diving, underwater swimming, treading water and survival fl oat are performed. Independence and comfort in deep water is essential for this level as some classes are held in deep water.

Level 4 Stroke Improvement (age 6 and over)Front and Back Crawl are refi ned through drills. Sidestroke and Breaststroke kick are developed. The Butterfl y is introduced, and head fi rst entries from the deck, the diving board, and starting blocks are learned. Ability to swim Front Crawl 25 yards is a prerequisite for this level as lessons are held in lap lanes.

Competitive Skills Training (age 8 - 18)Must be profi cient in Level 4 Swim Skills. Stroke technique and stroke effi ciency will be the focus of this program. Participants must be able to swim 25 yards of Freestyle (a.k.a. Front Crawl) and Backstroke (a.k.a. Back Crawl). Skills worked on will include Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfl y, competitive starts and turns. Stroke drills, sets with a pace clock and a basic introduction to springboard diving will also be presented.

Adult BeginnerThis class is designed for adults who do not have experience in the water. The goal is to overcome any fear of water and to teach the basic swimming techniques. Participants will work on water adjustment, balance, fl utter kick, rhythmic breathing and arm movements.

Adult IntermediateThis class is designed for adults who have a basic understanding of swimming and are comfortable in the water. The goal is stroke effi ciency. Participants will work on Front Crawl, Back Crawl, and Breaststroke. Additional strokes will be introduced as students are ready.

Adult AdvancedThis class is designed for adults who can perform the Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, and Sidestroke. The goal is to develop profi cient and quality strokes. The Butterfl y, speed turns and fl ip turns will be taught. Fitness training will be incorporated throughout the class.

NEW SSI SCUBATry SCUBASCUBA Diving: it’s like nothing on earth! Buckeye Diving School will conduct a try SCUBA class on Sunday August 30 from 12–2 PM at the Busbey Natatorium in the Rec Center. This is a great opportunity to discover the thrill of SCUBA diving.

This one-session class gives anyone age 10 and above the opportunity to try SCUBA diving and actually see what it is like to breathe under water. This 1.5-hour program provides all the equipment and expert training necessary to take you safely beneath the surface (and back again!). Expert trainers make this easy and fun so the whole family can join in. If you choose to sign up for the SCUBA certifi cation class beginning September 16, 2009 at the CSU Recreation Center, you will be reimbursed 50% of the Try SCUBA fee. Certain restrictions do apply: • Must be at least 10 years of age. • An adult must accompany children under 16. • Pre-registration is required (sorry no drop-ins) • Medical release form must be completed before pool work. SCUBABegin your underwater adventure here at Cleveland State University! Buckeye Diving School will be conducting a SCUBA diving program to give you the tools and training to enjoy the underwater world at its fullest potential. The initial program consists of classroom instruction and in-water instruction at the CSU Busbey Natatorium.
