HCCT’s ‘The Curious Savage’ Comedy, Dec 5-15Box Off. Opens Nov. 25; New Online Ticketing Available

COTTONWOOD SHORES…MARBLE FALLS, TX (Nov. 13, 2013) – When ticket sales begin Nov. 25 for season members (Nov. 28 for the public) for “The Curious Savage” at the Hill Country Community Theatre (HCCT), theatregoers will have a choice: tickets by phone most days or online convenience 24/7 by using their personal computer or mobile devices.
Veteran director Mary Ann Fletcher of Marble Falls is staging the hilarious comedy, which runs Thursdays through Sundays, Dec. 5-15th, at 7:30 p.m., with 2:15 p.m. Sunday, matinees. The 147-seat playhouse is in Cottonwood Shores (4003 FM 2147 West, between Marble Falls and Horseshoe Bay).
“The Curious Savage” is one of the most produced plays in North America and originally starred the great actress, Lillian Gish. The storyline has Ethel Savage, left a fortune by her late husband, determined to give away millions to help others realize their hopes and dreams. Unfortunately, her stubborn stepchildren stand in the way, committing her to a sanatorium where she meets a cast of zany “guests.”
It’s up to the “curious Savage” and her new-found friends to save the day.
The cast includes HCCT regulars Becky Barton of Marble Falls as Miss Willie, Misty Daniels of Kingsland as Fairy May; Steve Reily of Meadowlakes as Jeffery; Francie Dix of Horseshoe Bay as Lilly Belle Savage; Larry Grasmick of Marble Falls as Judge Samuel; Anson J. Hahn of Burnet as Hannibal; Ashley Harper-Oberle of Marble Falls
as Florence; Preston Kirk of Spicewood as Senator Titus Savage; Ronda Dale Kirk of Spicewood as Mrs. Paddy; and Sally Stemac of Burnet as Ethel Savage.
Australian native Steve Barton of Marble Falls, (Becky’s husband), makes his HCCT stage debut as Dr. Emmett of “The Cloisters.” Cassie Coggins of Marble Falls is the Stage Manager. Reily also serves as the Scenic and Lighting Designer.
“We are thrilled to announce the introduction of on-line ticket sales,” said Reily, HCCT’s Managing Director. “Now our patrons will be able to get tickets using their computers or mobile devices by simply going to www.thehcct.org. HCCT has partnered with E-Reserve, an experienced ticket service based in Fredericksburg, TX, in order to offer this much requested service to our patrons.
“By logging onto the HCCT website, they can now learn about the show, select the performance they would like to attend, and even print their tickets before arriving at our lobby,” Reily said. “Of course we’ll still take reservations by phone or in person at the box office. Basically, we are offering extra convenience.
“Many theatres have provided this service for years. Our Board of Governors and the HCCT Theatre Guild are committed to elevating the patron experience. Along with new listening devices now available for the hearing impaired, we are taking advantage of today’s technology to achieve that objective.”
This new on-line ticket service will be offered starting Nov. 25, the same day that the box office opens for HCCT’s latest production “The Curious Savage.” On that same day the theatre’s new website

Praise has been overwhelming for “The Curious Savage” since it was first produced in 63 years ago. Lillian Gish, considered one of the greatest actresses to grace the stage and screen, portrayed Ethel P. Savage for the premiere production.
“Savage” is recognized as a classic American theatre comedy for cleverly comparing the kindness and loyalty of psychiatric patients with the greed and vanity of “respectable” public figures. It questions the conventional definitions of sanity while lampooning celebrity culture. Stage Magazine.org described the plays as, “…a feel-good play filled with heart in its contrasts of avarice with generosity.”
For 21 years, Fletcher was the Director of Theatre at the Marble Falls High School, where she directed more than 60 productions. In August of 2008, she retired from teaching, however she continues to volunteer in the Fine Arts Dept. at MFHS. She also serves as VP of Productions on the HCCT Board of Governors, Chair-Pro Tem of the Texas Coalition of Quality Arts Education, past Advocacy Chair for the Texas Educational Theatre Assn., and is a member of the Highland Lakes Service League.
She has directed several HCCT productions including “Southern Hospitality” and “The Rainmaker.”
Performances will be Thursday through Sunday, beginning with the Gala Opening Dec. 5, and continue through Dec. 15. The curtain for evening shows is at 7:30 p.m.; for Sunday matinees at 2:15 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults and $7 for students age 16 and under. Group rates also are available. Seating per show is limited to 147 persons.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.thehcct.org. Reservations can also be made at the box office (noon-4 p.m., Mon.-Fri.), 830-798-8944, beginning Nov. 25th for season members and Nov. 28th for the general public. • Wet hands with water• Use plain bar or liquid soap• Create a lather by vigorously rubbing hands together for 15-20
seconds—about the amount of time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice
• Be sure to wash palms, back of hands, fingers, and nails (clean nails by gently scratching nails down your opposing soapy palm)

BASKETBALL ANYONE?
It’s that wonderful time of year again. Basketball season has begun and it’s time to root your favorite team on to victory. It’s also time to play a little “hoops” outside. Please take advantage of the basketball courts in the neighborhood. If those courts aren’t available and you choose to play in the streets please be considerate of your neighbors by following a few easy guidelines: --Remember that safety always comes first. Parked cars and curvy roads make it difficult to see you playing. Give cars the right of way. Let them pass through before continuing the game. --Also, try not to play too late into the evening. Some people go to work early in the morning and they might be trying to get some sleep. --Finally, keep the courts clean and have fun!
Texas Xeriscapes and Resource ConservationQuestion of the Month: "I understand that many cities are
requiring Commercial irrigation system audits every year or every other year? Must I do this? Why am I required to do this?"
It is best to check with individual cities to determine if your commercial property is subject to this fairly new irrigation audit requirement. Why are cities requiring this? Because many old and outdated systems are continuing to operate and waste millions of gallons of water yearly. The purpose in requiring these audits (by certified inspectors) is to reduce water waste.
To know if your city requires these, visit their web site or inquire of your landscape professional.
And yes, there is a cost involved, so be sure to include this in your yearly maintenance budget (along with any repairs which the City will also require).
Fifth Principle of Xeriscape: Use of MulchAs mentioned in previous newsletters, we are discussing the 7
principles of Xeriscape. The fifth principle involves a discussion of mulch. Mulch keeps plant roots cool, prevents soil from crusting, minimizes evaporation and reduces weed growth. All good things, right? There are MANY types of mulch. Organic mulches such as bark chips, wood grindings, bark nuggets, shredded hardwood etc should be applied 2-3" deep. Fiber mulches create a web that is more resistant to wind and rain washout. Mulches may be natural color or dyed. Inorganic mulches suchs as rocks, gravel, crushed glass, etc. should be applied 2 to 3 inches deep. When used in tree wells, organic mulches should be kept at a minimum up against the trunk/bark of the tree. Although mulch is common in tree wells, initially the well is formed as a basin to hold water for newly planted trees. As a tree becomes established this water basin is no longer necessary (the feeder roots are far outside the diameter of the well); however, the well serves to keep mowers and string trimmers away from the base of the tree. In beds, mulch is essential to hold in moisture and reduce weeds.
Plant of the Month: Flameleaf SumacThis large shrub/small tree is gorgeous this time of year. The
beautiful colors appear as the temperatures cool and days shorten.
The Flameleaf Sumac is native to the Texas Hill Country and is quite adaptable. It is not meant to be a centerpiece as its growth form can be considered a bit rangy, but in a natural setting or on the edge of a native area, it is stunning! The leaves turn various shades of red and gold then drop off the tree. Spring will see new foliage that is light green and delicate. And yes, it is a cousin to poison ivy, although this plant does no harm!

Texas Drought Map of Current ConditionsYes, we are still in a drought. Please note the map of November
conditions on the right. The white counties are "normal" conditions. The yellow counties are deemed ABNORMALLY DRY. The pinkish counties are MODERATE DROUGHT. The orange counties are SEVERE DROUGHT. The red counties are EXTREME DROUGHT and the dark red counties are EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT. Looking better than previous months, but still very few "white/normal" counties.
