“Satan or Scripture”

The Barna Group did a study called "Teens and the Supernatural" which revealed that three out of ten teens have played with Ouija boards and had their palms read. It also reported that eight out of ten teens read their horoscopes. God's word is very clear in its denunciation of these occult practices. God said, "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD; because of these same detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God. The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so. The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him" (Deut. 18:10-15 NIV). Using a Ouija board or reading a horoscope seems like such harmless fun from a human standpoint. However, from God's standpoint they are much more serious. God places these practices in the same category as human sacrifice. He calls all of those who practice them "detestable." Not only does God forbid engaging in occult practices, he also forbids listening to the information that comes from these practices. Why would God take such a strong stance against the occult? One reason is because behind all of these occult activities is the devil and his demons (Acts 16:16-18). God doesn't want us to have fellowship with demons; he wants our sole devotion (1 Cor. 10:20-22). Moses draws a very clear contrast in this passage between seeking guidance from occult practices and from seeking guidance from God's prophet. Peter interprets this prophet like Moses to be Jesus Christ (Acts 3:22-23). Jesus' prophetic words are to be found today in the New Testament writings (cf. 1 Cor. 14:37). This passage commands us to seek our guidance from Scripture and not from Satan and the occult.
