òThe Leaven of Christianity ó
We hear a lot these days about the separation of church and state. Though it seems that some think that this phraseology occurs within our Constitution, it does not. Actually this is found in a letter that was written by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802. The Constitution forbids the government from interfering in the church, but it doesn't prohibit the church from influencing government. Nevertheless many say that a man should keep his religion to himself. They say that religion is a private matter and should never be brought out into the public square. God doesn't share that sentiment. Jesus likened his people to salt (Matt. 5:13) and leaven (Matt. 13:33. He intends for his people to influence as many as possible with his values. Scripture teaches that true religion should influence every aspect of society. Consider some of the areas. --Business: "Honest scales and balances belong to the LORD; all the weights in the bag are of his making" (Prov. 16:11 NIV). "Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight" (Lev. 19:13b NIV). --Government and national affairs: "Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established through righteousness" (Prov. 16:12 NIV). "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people" (Prov. 14:34 NIV). --Arts and entertainment: "Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving...It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret" (Eph. 5:4, 12 NIV). --Marriage: "Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable...Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants" (Lev. 18:22, 24-25 NIV). May we all continue to try to influence our nation back toward God's values.
