Eggshell porcelain tea bowl and brazen tea strainer

This piece of work is the attempt to bring two oppositional Materials into harmony. the corresponding Shapes create communication between the two vessels.

The Porcelainbowl, fragile and at the same time of great tension in shape requires the act of balance when used.the brazenteastrainer stands in contrast to it with its strong and solid Metall. deependet and looped wtih holes the Met-albowl turnes into a strain. The pattern of the strain is formed ramdomly, immitating the pattern of scat-tered tea leaves.

vielfalt gentle food transportation The tradition of wrapping food for storage and transportation is inspiration for vielFALT. The approach is to keep food in a stable and at the same time flexible container. A single piece of fabric turned into a solid part as in contrast to the soft top, which is gently wrapping the food.

SIDEBOARD When walking through Berlin streets,a world of abandoned objekts can be discovered. These old drawers used to belong to various Pieces of Furniture found in my neighbourhood. Traditionally made from whole wood and painted thickly in light yellow and green ,they are too beautiful to be thrown away . To give them a second use,I designed and built this sideboard.Reduced to a clear and simple shape the sideboard emphasises on the interplay between old and new.

A stable Construction

This peace of work is the approach of generating a stable bench. a single plain iron sheet is lasecut and lat-er on folded. The Construction is based on the use of vari-ous triangles which causes a very high sta-bility . As stable it is in Construction , as special and highly asthetical it IS in form.

DROPS A storagesystem made from recycled Cans and colorful plastic connectors.Based on the thought of a re-use focus in that design , the connectors hold together empty Tomato-cans used in Gastronomy .

If is parallel ,in honeycombstructure or amorph in Shape, the system can be designed as wished and also lateron be added to. perfect grip is given with the specific profile of the connectors ,matching the shape of the can.

a dot is placed on top of the connector. The Dot can be used as a hook for jackets, scarfs, towels ,etc. The cans give storage space for smaller objects such as hats or keys.

The Projektor Orkestor is an artis-tic ensemble that creates partici-pative analog realtime visuals. It plays structures, graphics and mo-tions on around seven and more over-head projectors, herefore they all got hacked and equipped as selfmade instruments. In refference to the works of Maho-ly Nagy (his light machines worked in similar manner)I made a manual light organ out of an Overhead Pro-jector. When turning on a crank, a perforated plastic sheet starts winding around the Projektor creat-ing a constantly changing pattern of lightsqares which moves as a projection across the walls. Various foils make each pattern different in colors.

CHINDOGU IT YOURSELF!

Page 27: May Kukula Portfolio

“Bizzare Tool” is one translation of “Chindogu” , a japanese Invention brought into the world by the japanese designer Kenji Kawakami. These objects for daily use are always trying to solve a very specific problem but in re-ality their existence is superfluous.

Quick´n´clean is the swift cleaning assistence for wash-ing dishes . Various sponge and scrubber- add ons come with it . www.susannahertrich.com/formlabor/

Being Daniel Eatock Combining objects just by following the criterias of shape, the artist Daniel Eatock creates surprising and scurile installations .Following his principles , I connected a part of the washing mashine with new objekts to put a very technical piece into new realations and give it a completely different use . www.susannahertrich.com/formlabor/

144 buttons 144 buttons was the Application as-sesment for UDK 2010.The challange is the creation of something which , concept, design, construction and copmletion is primarily based on the use of 144 buttons. Making a dress with its button bor-der in the back seems simple but the buttons are Message at the same time.In its round shape and the black co-lour ,the buttons optically refer to the black dots of the Braille letters. Based on the Braille system the arrangement of all 144 dots on the buttonstay had been chosen in order to write following sen-tence:

Rather have a zipper than 144 buttons !

everyone who buttones up 144 buttons would agree upon that statement.Indeed this is a hidden message and not to be decrypted by everyone. but even the outcoming shape os an astheatically apeeling and extraor-dinary one.

How does skin grow ? how does something layer up to a volume ? The scarf is made of simple stripes of fabric, partially connected. When wearing it changes in size and vol-ume, can be small and dense or wide and voluminous, responding to the shape of body.

1+1=

1two pieces adding up to one . A system copied from coleslaw, where the leaves hold each other through arangement and shape and tighten up to one plant. The brass bracelett is made in two semi-circles . each semicircle cannot stick to the wrist. But when stuck together or twisted one into the other it holds by the tension of the material and certain shape .

The leathern hand bag is in its average size perfect for daily use.The bottom provides a storagecompartement ,in which a shopping bag is hidden. In the need of additional space it is possible to unzip the bottom co-martement ,unfold the shopping bag and mantle it around the smaller hand bag.The volume of the shopping bag pro-vides great storage room ,as it also keeps the leathern hand bag inside.

SET DESIGN

Page 44: May Kukula Portfolio
Page 45: May Kukula Portfolio

SET DESIGNThe most important work apart from the design stud-ies at UDK is my workset dresser. It includes the creation of film settings and the decoration of rooms and spaces ,in wich movies are shot. The viarity of tasks and skills at the work in this field is immense. It includes tasks such as the construction of tempo-rary buildings the modification of existing spaces and its decoration. The set design always supports the visual storytell-ing. Therefore the cooperative work with cinematographer ,director and the film crew are as important as the creative work itself.
