    Abstract

Objective: For many people, most of the working day is spent sitting in front of a computer screen.Approaches for obesity treatment and prevention are being sought to increase workplace physicalactivity because low levels of physical activity are associated with obesity. Our hypothesis was that avertical workstation that allows an obese individual to work while walking would be associated withsignificant and substantial increases in energy expenditure over seated work.

Methods: The vertical workstation is a workstation that allows an office worker to use a standardpersonal computer while walking on a treadmill at a self-selected velocity. 15 sedentary individualswith obesity (14 women, one man; 43 (7.5) years, 86 (9.6) kg; body mass index 32 (2.6) kg/m2)underwent measurements of energy expenditure at rest, seated working in an office chair, standingand while walking at a self-selected speed using the vertical workstation. Body composition wasmeasured using dual x ray absorptiometry.

Results: The mean (SD) energy expenditure while seated at work in an office chair was 72 (10)kcal/h, whereas the energy expenditure while walking and working at a self-selected velocity of 1.1(0.4) mph was 191 (29) kcal/h. The mean (SD) increase in energy expenditure for walking-and-working over sitting was 119 (25) kcal/h.

Conclusions: If sitting computer-time were replaced by walking-and-working, energy expenditurecould increase by 100 kcal/h. Thus, if obese individuals were to replace time spent sitting at thecomputer with walking computer time by 2 3 h/day, and if other components of energy balance wereconstant, a weight loss of 20 30 kg/year could occur.

Mayo Clinic Obesity Researchers Test 'Classroom Of The Future'

    19 Mar 2006

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- "Can you imagine a school without desks? A school where children aremoving as part of their lessons? And most importantly, they are smiling and healthy?" asks MayoClinic obesity researcher James Levine, M.D., Ph.D. If so, you have imagined the latest anti-obesityconcept-project from Mayo Clinic -- the classroom of the future.

Obesity among the young is a national epidemic according to the national Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention. More than 15 percent of children in the United States are already overweightand the problem continues to grow. It is anticipated that half the children in America are likely to haveweight problems during their lifetimes. The result is increasing health problems, including astaggering rise in type II diabetes, previously prevalent only in adults. A major culprit, along with poor-quality diet, is a lack of activity at school and at home.

Dr. Levine, who directs the Active Life research team, is targeting childhood obesity. He and childresearcher Lorraine Lanningham-Foster, Ph.D., are testing a revolutionary concept in how societythinks of a school classroom.

They have asked a simple question: do children really need to sit at desks while they learn? To findthe answer they have designed what they believe to be the first chairless school -- complete with"standing" desks and a host of sophisticated learning technologies. Most important to the equationare the children -- whom they find are eager to learn in a new way.

How They Did It -- Collaboration

"We assembled a team of business and organization leaders who all recognize the urgency to resolveinactivity in children and realize that the future has to look different from our past," says Dr. Levine. The Rochester Athletic Club built an indoor village to house the school of the future, Apple providediBook wireless notebook computers and iPods that play video, and America on the Move (acommunity-based advocacy organization) will raise awareness of the concept. "The Rochester PublicSchools were amazing," Dr. Levine explains. "Teachers stood in line to take on the challenge."

"When I was approached I realized that this has to be the face of the future not only for education butalso for the health of American children," said Jerry Williams, superintendent of Rochester PublicSchools. "If the concepts are proven, Rochester will consider expanding such an experimentalenvironment in one of our elementary schools."

Thirty fourth and fifth graders spent a week having all their school activity measured in their traditionalclassroom. This week (week of March 13th) they are moving to the "school of the future." They will begiven several days to settle in. The children's activity will be monitored in the new school environment

"Initially this concept of a chairless school was viewed as a crazy, unachievable idea," says Dr.Levine. "But then I started to ask for help. Every organization I approached simply said, 'YES.' I couldnot believe it. Then I realized that they all wanted to be part of this for the same reason we did -- it isfor our children."

    Abstract

Objective: It was proposed that an office-place stepping device is associated with significant andsubstantial increases in energy expenditure compared to sitting energy expenditure. The objectivewas to assess the effect of using an office-place stepping device on the energy expenditure of leanand obese office workers.

Methods: The office-place stepping device is an inexpensive, near-silent, low-impact device that canbe housed under a standard desk and plugged into an office PC for self-monitoring. Energyexpenditure was measured in lean and obese subjects using the stepping device and during rest, sitting and walking. 19 subjects (279 years, 8523 kg): 9 lean (BMI29 kg/m2) attended the experimental office facility. Energy expenditure was measured at rest,

Accessible Tactile Maps for theMonterey Peninsula College campus

  • 7/31/2019 Grant Portfolio 2012 May

    14/29

Introduction :Permanent installation of a metal tactile map of and on theMonterey Peninsula College campus. This map would be acenterpiece in the new Student Services building. Tactilemaps are designed specifically for vision-impaired and blindstudents (who number near a hundred on campus) but canalso be used by all students.

These maps include low vision as well as tactile features, offering a cutting-edge illustration of "universal design" inpractice. Any individual, whether they have 20/20 vision, lowvision, or no vision, can access and benefit from these maps. These maps can also be designed to include information forindividuals who are mobility impaired, allowing users toidentify and plan wheelchair accessible routes.

The primary benefit of this project is providing map informationto all students. Initially, this project provides us with one permanent tactile map in a central locationand a number of portable, collapsible tactile maps. The campus also has the technology andresources to re-create the portable tactile maps at minimal cost, once we have this data. And, overtime and with enough funding, the permanent maps could be installed at the new High Tech Centerfor the Disabled and the Library and Technology Center. Each of these buildings is centrally located, with high traffic.

This project also provides MPC with the cartographic data to enable other mapping projects. One inparticular is a smartphone MPC map that would enable any student to locate themselves andanywhere they would like to go on campus. Using a smartphones GPS capability the student wouldbe able to put in their desired location and get auditory directions to their destination as they walkacross campus. These durable, attractive maps would be representative of MPC's commitment to allof its students - including its large disabled student population.

Our financial target is at least $8000- attached is the initial quote, for the design and production of lowvision/tactile maps for MPC. Current fund raising efforts have us at about $2500.

    Cost:

$8,000-10,000 of which $2500 has already been raised

Proposal for design and production of low vision/tactile maps for Monterey Peninsula CollegeMagnesium tactile map of the campus

One magnesium display map of the overall campus, with simultaneous Braille /tactile features andlarge print /low vision features, is recommended for design and production.

Content: All important landmarks of the campus will be represented, including perimeter streets, main interior driving and walking paths, all buildings, parking and recreation areas, grass areas, maincrosswalks, bus stops, and any other important landmarks that are determined by MPC to belong onthis map.

All tactile and visual symbols will be represented in a Map Key, including a North symbol and aYOU ARE HERE symbol. Given the number of landmarks and labels to be placed on this map, aseparate directory of locations will likely be necessary.

Portable, collapsible maps of the campus

Ten (10) portable tactile maps, giving the same representation as the magnesium map above, arerecommended for design and production.Portable maps can be produced in either a 2-fold or 4-fold format. During the design process, visualdrafts for the portable maps will be submitted to MPC, and a decision can then be made as to the

preference between a 4-fold and 2-fold design. These maps can then be handed out to blind andvisually impaired students, visitors, and staff, and also used by your O & M consultants in theirtraining with students on campus. All portable maps will be produced in a special encapsulated plastic-paper material, and will haveboth large print and Braille features. They will also have a North identifier along with theaccompanying map key and directory.

    ESTIMATED PROJECT COST

$2500 Management and oversight of projectThis will include the following: full oversight of project, travel and related expenses for a site visit, walking review of campus, review of existing maps to be used and modified, conducting necessaryvideo and photography on campus, submitting successive design drafts until final approval is givenfor production.

$2500 Cartography/line art fees for the magnesium and portable map designs. In addition to line art and cartography, work will include modifying any existing digital maps, developing visual-tactile symbols, importing Braille, designing large print abbreviation and labeling, and designing key and directory.$1250 Production of 1 magnesium display map, with key and directory. ($1250 per display)$1300 Portable map set-up fee ($300).Hand production and assembly of ten (10) portable tactile maps at $100 per map.*Note: A portablemap production workshop could also be included in a proposal, in which case MPC could thenproduce their own portable maps working from a master template.Total cost estimate: $7550.00

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

    Thank you,

    Joseph Cioffi, M.Ed.InTouch Graphics, Inc.

Additional information:Dimensions: The exact size of the magnesium display maps is open to review, although the

dimensions of any one magnesium sheet may be no greater than 35 by 23. This is likely to be thefinal size recommended, as these dimensions will allow for the clearest and most comfortablerepresentation of the campus

Design procedure: Ordinarily, tactile map projects begin with a site assessment. This will includetaking digital photos/video of the areas to be mapped, discussion with staff, and a review of anypresently available visual or digital maps. Following completion of a visual draft, a proposed maplayout is then submitted for review. At any time during the design process, MPC can recommend theaddition, deletion, or modification of any design elements. Our job will be to guide you in designchoices so that the map will neither overwhelm the user with too much tactile or visual clutter, nor betoo simple in design so as to offer an inadequate amount of useful information.

Payment procedure: When a design project is agreed upon, we require 1/3 of the total project fee asan initial deposit to begin our work. A second 1/3 payment is then requested upon acceptance of thefinal visual drafts. A final third is then due upon delivery of the product.

    Adaptive Computer Technology LabGrant Proposal

Large screen LCD TV for presentation inthe ACT Lab

  • 7/31/2019 Grant Portfolio 2012 May

    Proposal:

    Sharp Aquos 80" Class 1080p 120Hz AquoMotion 240

LED Edge Lit LCD HDTV to be installed in the Adaptive

    Technology Center classroom (HSS101)

    Rationale:

The new Adaptive Technology Center classroom is particularly ill suited for the current projection

system. Being in a very sunny location with a wall of windows provides a great deal of light. So muchlight in fact that the installed overhead lights are never used. While this natural light is beneficial for

the classroom environment it makes presentation difficult. The installed projector, while outputting a

relatively high level of lumens, has a picture that can be difficult for students to see. The size of the

image is not a problem, but the picture is dim, washed out by the excess of ambient light.

In the neighboring classroom HSS 102, the LCD TV provides a picture much more suitable for

presentation in this environment. Additionally, the long-term costs of the TV are lower, as projected

maintenance costs, need for expensive new bulbs, and shorter estimated equipment life, all drive

classroom projector costs higher than a big-screen LCD television.

A big-screen LCD television would be used in addition to the existing production system-placed

across the room and directly in front of the majority of student workstations. The majority of the

infrastructure is in place for the power and video cabling needs, with minor retrofitting needed for the

final cable runs and mounting a relatively heavy (87 lb.) television on the wall. This television would

also integrate with the existing Airplay wireless system, providing a rich multimedia experience forpresentation.

Ipad2 Classroom set for theHighTechCenter for the Disabled

(Adaptive Computer Technology andComputer Assisted Instruction labs)

  • 7/31/2019 Grant Portfolio 2012 May

    21/29

    Proposal:

Classroom set of 15 Apple iPad2 tablet

    computers with 2 Bretford PowerRack

    Trays for charging/organization.

Protected by Bear Motion Leather FolioCover. To be used in the High Tech

Center for the Disabled - for student

    projects in the HighTechCenter:

    Adaptive Computer Technology and

    Computer Assisted Instruction labs.

    Rationale:

The Apple Ipad2 has multiple uses in the HighTechCenter labs including:1. For access for students with cerebral palsy, and other physical visual - motor issues who are

unable/have limited use of a mouse

    2. Tactile Math/Reading and English apps for basic skills students

    3. As our student numbers have increased we often do not have enough space/workstations - this

presents an opportunity to meet computing needs in space efficient fashion

    4. A number of classes are team taught- this would enable us to integrate our curriculum more

efficiently as well as communicate wirelessly between classrooms- we will be able to

coordinate and simultaneously present from one tablet to both classrooms

    5. Video\ photographic\editing image capabilities of the iPad have multiple uses for student

    projects

    6. Bridging the digital divide: give our predominantly low income/disabled students the opportunity

to become a digital citizen learning to incorporate mobile technology into their education

    and life.

Hard drive upgrade to SSD (Solid StateDrives) in the ACT lab

  • 7/31/2019 Grant Portfolio 2012 May

    Proposal:

    18 OCZ Vertex 3 VTX3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC

Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) to upgrade existing hard drives in

    the ACT lab

    Rationale:

Solid State Drives (SSD) offer significant performance advantages, increased reliability, and will

greatly extend the lifespan of these workstations.

The bootup process, launching applications, file searches, network transfers, and virus scans can all

be accomplished in as little as 1/4 of the time of the existing hard drives. As there are no moving parts

with a flash drive, mechanical reliability is much higher. These drives also run much cooler, produce

less noise, and consume less power- all factors in their lower long term cost than traditional hard

    drives.

    Student Scholarships :

We do have an adaptive technology student scholarship that was set up in the name of a former

student. The purpose of the scholarship was in memoriam for a longtime student at the Adaptive

Technology Center. It was founded by his family and friends and from the scholarship fund, we awardan annual specialized technology grant to a deserving student as identified by the instructors at

MPCs High Tech Center for the Disabled. The department purchases the student specific technology

(ranging in price from $300 - $600) designed to assist them in their education. This Ken Perkins

scholarship was set up directly from donations, started with about $4000, and is held within a

Supportive Services and Instruction trust fund.

Additionally, in the trust fund we also have monies for smaller book grants, and a Student of the Year

scholarship. All of these are awarded in a ceremony in the spring semester every year, and range

    from $100 to $1000.

    MPC Foundation:

The MPC Foundation is our fundraising branch and handles student scholarships outside of the ones

specifically targeted to our population. In addition, they would work with you if you are interested in

naming rights - the naming of a lab, classroom, or other significant feature of the campus in honor ormemoriam of a particular individual.
