THE DESIGN OF OUR BUILDING SHAPE WAS ORIGINALLY FROM THE BEAUTY OF THE RICE FARM SET-TING. THE COMMUNITY CENTER IS A PLACE THAT GATHERS PEOPLE TOGETHER AND OFFERS PEOPLE A PLACE OF LIVING. RICE FARM IS A PERFECT IDEA FOR HUMAN HABITAT. NOT ONLY ITS NATURAL SHAPE, BUT ALSO THE NICE STRUCTURE THAT HOLDS THE PLANTS ON THE SLOPE AND BEAR THE LOAD OF THE RAIN.

WHEN PEOPLE THINK ABOUT THE COMMUNITY CENTER, THEY MAY THINK ABOUT A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE CONNECT TO EACH OTHERS AND EVEN A PLACE WHERE THEIR CHILDREN TO GROW WITH. THUS, WE PUT THE IDEA OF GROWTH INTO OUR RENOVATION PLAN. THE NEW RENOVATED BUILDING GROWS FROM THE OLD ONES.

GREEN REJUVENATION

ALTON MILLS IS A HIsTORIC WOOL MILL AND RUBBER FACTORY IN THE TOWN OF ALTON. ONTARIO. HISTORIC BUILDINGS GO THROUGH MANY TRANSFORMATIONS IN THEIR LIFETIMIE AS NEW OCCUPANTS RENOVATE THE INTERIOR SPACES AND BUILDING EXTERIOR TO SUIT THEIR NEEDS. THESE CHANGES CAN CREATE A DISTORTED FINISH TO THE STRUCTURE AS NEW ELEMENTS ARE CONSTRUCTED ALONGSIDE THE OLD.

OUR NEW ADDITION TO THE BUILDING IS BASED ON THE CONCEPT OF A FRACTURED STONE SEEN IN THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE BUILIDNG ROOMS ALONGSIDE THE EXISTING FACILITY. THE SOLID STONE WALLS OF THE ORIGINAL BUILDING ARE JUXTAPOSED BY THE GLASS WALLS AND ATRIUM ROOF OF THE ADDITION. GLASS REPESENTS THE VOID OF SPACE CREATED BY CRACKS IN A BROKEN STONE FRAGMENT.

9TWO SPACE SAVING METHODS THAT WERE UTILIZED HELPED TO REDUCE THE BUILDING FOOTPRINT. THE FIRST WAS BY PLACING A THIRD FLOOR ON TOP OF THE EXISTING BUILIDNG. THE SECOND WAS BY PLACING THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE BUILDING ADDITION. ON COLUMNS TO ELEVATE IF OFF OF THE GROUND.
