All completed feedback forms must be received by GRNSW by theclose of business on Tuesday 30 June 2015.

  • IT will be champion stayer Space Starsturn to dominate on the Group 1 stage atSandown Park in Thursday nights RSNSandown Cup.

Last week superstar sprinter FernandoBale stifled betting on the Harrison-Dawsonand won accordingly and it looks likely tobe a very similar story with Space Star inThursdays $175,000 to-the-winnerSandown Cup, the worlds richest stayingevent.

Trained by master Victorian distance con-ditioner Robert Britton, Space Star has beenvirtually unstoppable in 2015, winning 11of his 12 starts for the year, including threeGroup 1 victories in the Association Cup,Galaxy and Zoom Top.

And the June 12 son of Bekim Bale andTonto Tears continued his near-faultless runof form last Thursday with a scorching all-the-way victory in his Sandown Cup heat.

Space Star stopped the clock at 41.26, thesecond fastest time ever recorded overSandowns 715m course, just .09 outsideMiatas track record of 41.17 established inthe heats of the 2012 Sandown Cup.

After Space Star drew perfectly in boxeight in Monday mornings Sandown Cupbox draw, the TAB installed him as $1.28favourite in its Fixed Odds market, notquite as short as the unprecedented $1.05Fernando Bale started in the Harrison-Dawson.

He wont be as short as Fernando Balebecause dogs like Sweet It Is and Lady Toyare in the race but hell probably be shortenough for me not to back him! RobertBritton quipped.

Hes really racing with great confidenceat the moment and if he comes out like hedid in his heat its very hard to see him get-ting beaten, but hes got to do it for onemore week.

After back-to-back feature victories onthe road in the Association and Gold Cupsat Wentworth Park, Space Star had almostthree weeks off before resuming in theSandown Cup heats.

Starting at $1.40 from box five in the lastof four heats, Space Star won as he liked, romping to a 12 length victory overQueenslander Mullaway.

The near-record run comfortably eclipsedSpace Stars previous Sandown personalbest of 41.65 and was more than half a sec-ond faster than the other three heat win-ners Brooke Ennis Lady Toy (41.80),Braden Finns defending Sandown Cupchampion Sweet It Is (41.82) and SteveCollins Unix Bale (42.09).

I think thats probably the best Ive everseen him come out and that makes all thedifference, Britton said on Friday morning.

When he jumped like he did I expectedhim to run time. Hes shown at TheMeadows and Wentworth Park he can runthose sorts of times but while he wentabout seven lengths quicker than the otherheats Ive got no doubt it was a varyingtrack last night.

There was a downpour earlier in thenight and I had dogs in races three and fourand the track was nowhere near as firmthen as it was for race seven, Space Starsrace, so I think youll find those times willlevel out a bit.

He went in quite fresh last night hedonly had one 500m trial since winning theGold Cup in Sydney and thats what Ivebeen doing with him all the way through.Im concentrating on series rather than rac-ing him week to week.

He doesnt travel all that well and afterback-to-back campaigns in Sydney he prob-ably needed a couple of weeks off.

Id expect him to go better next week theres no doubt he wont go any worse but it will all come down to how well hecomes out.

Id like him in the wings preferably theone although not everyone agrees with meabout that - but all were asking for is aclear run and hopefully hell take care of therest.

While Britton didnt get box one, he gothis second choice with Space Star drawingeight, from where hes unbeaten in fourcareer appearances, further boostingBrittons chances of celebrating an elusivevictory in the Holy Grail of Australian dis-tance races.

Of all the staying races the Sandown Cupis the grand final and Id love to win it butits always been a very tough race to winand my record in the race is terrible,Britton said.

Ive had a few dogs in the race but Imnot sure if Ive run a place. Ive also hadsome dogs that have gone into the series asvery good chances but havent even madethe final, like Nellie Noodles. She was flying

at the time (2010) but she got checkedbadly in her heat and missed out.

Britton will have a second string to hisSandown Cup bow in former NSW bitchCosmic Vee Bee, a daughter of CosmicRumble and Fancy Conquest, that ran sec-ond to upset winner Unix Bale in the open-ing heat. Im really pleased she made thefinal for her owner, Shayne Williams, whos

the lure driver at Wentworth Park andRichmond, Britton said.

Shayne is absolutely shaking, hes thatexcited!

Shes a level below some of the otherdogs in the race but shes racing so consis-tently at the moment and shed have to besome sort of a place chance if things go herway.

    Collins Claims Group 1 Crown

SUCCESSFUL Victorian trainer SteveCollins celebrated an overdue Group 1breakthrough when track specialist LamiaBale held on for a thrilling victory in theSapphire Crown at Sandown Park lastThursday night.

Lamia Bales triumph in the bitches-onlySapphire Crown was the first leg of aGroup 1 double for the Wheeler family atthe Sandown meeting, with the freakishFernando Bale winning the Harrison-Dawson for the males later in the night.

The $100,000 to-the-winner SapphireCrown was Lamia Bales third feature suc-cess at Sandown, with the July 12 daugh-ter of the ill-fated sire High Earner andMaple Bale having won the Group 2 Laurelsand middle distance Group 3 Sir JohnDillon Memorial in quick succession lastDecember.

She also won the Group 3 Ambrosoli atWentworth Park during this years GoldenEaster Egg Carnival.

In edging out the fast-finishing AngieRocks, Lamia Bale became the first bitchsince champion Paua To Burn in 2004 tocomplete Sandowns female SapphireCrown/Laurels feature double.

It was great to finally win a Group 1.Theyre bloody hard to get! a delightedSteve Collins said.

They say the first one is the hardest butI suppose if you get into enough of themyoull win one eventually and it was ourturn this time.

I didnt go to the track because I didntwant to upset the applecart but I cracked aJohnnie (Walker) Blue (Label) at home! Itwas very exciting but also a bit of a reliefto finally win a Group 1 because theyre sohard to win.

The closest weve come to winning aGroup 1 before was when Dyna Willow ransecond in the Galaxy at Cannington lastyear, beaten a head.

Lamia Bale was also very stiff in theAustralian Cup earlier in the year. She beatFernando Bale in the heats and she washalf a length in front on the first turn in thefinal when she got knocked over.

Lamia Bale was clearly the fastest qualifi-er for the Sapphire Crown after winningher heat in a fast 29.27 and despite draw-ing awkwardly in six for the final she start-ed a clear-cut $2.40 favourite, with MarioBrigantis rails runner Angie Rocks ($4)viewed as the main threat.

Lamia Bale began well to lead on the firstturn however Steve Collins worst fearslooked like being realised as Angie Rocksloomed ominously approaching the hometurn.

However Lamia Bale and the Lara-basedCollins family - wouldnt be denied, dig-ging deep to defeat Angie Rocks by a headin 29.23, her tenth Sandown victory.

Box six was the only worry becausethere was a lot of pace underneath her,

Collins said. When she led I looked back to see

where the red (Angie Rocks) was. I knowits a flying machine by itself and it can findbacksides in its races but it was likeGeorge Moore was riding her!

Angie Rocks kept blowing the whistleand I was very worried when I saw her getthrough at the 600m boxes. I thought Ohno, not again!

But I honestly think Lamia Bale feelswhere the other dog is coming and blocksthem off. Ive seen her do it a few times she did it to Fernando Bale in theAustralian Cup heat and she did it again.God bless her!

Shes definitely one of the best grey-hounds weve had. I think Dyna Willowwas probably faster but Lamia Bale wouldbe the most consistent little girl weve everhad. Shes so reliable out of the boxes andshe tries her butt off every week.

It was also very pleasing to win a Group1 for Paul Wheeler. We took a risk when wedecided to move over from South Australiaseven or eight years ago and we wouldnthave been able to do it without theWheelers. Theyve kept supporting us soits great to be able to repay them.

It was a memorable night for the Collins

family, with Unix Bale causing an upset inthe opening heat of the Group 1 SandownCup and Caustic Bale running third in theGroup 1 Harrison-Dawson.

Theyll be hoping for more of the samethis Thursday when Lamia Bale the lastgreyhound to lower Fernando Balescolours - tackles Andrea Daillys superstarin the Group 3 Bill Collins Memorial, whileUnix Bale will be one of the outsiders inthe Sandown Cup.

Lamia Bale has got her favourite boxagain (six) and Fernando Bale has drawnthe red again, Collins offered ruefully.

Fernando Bale is a super dog and hesfaultless at what he does. But hes due tomiss it and Lamia Bale has beaten himbefore although Paul (Wheeler) wouldprobably abuse me if she did it again!

We were rapt when Unix Bale won herSandown Cup heat. We changed her train-ing up a bit and she ran as good as she canbut she had some luck when the leader(Ralphy Cinel) unfortunately broke down.

I dont think Unix Bale has any chanceon Thursday night. Space Star has drawnhis box (eight) and hes on the right side ofUnix Bale (seven) because shes a mad rail-er but youve got to be in it to win it!

    Fernando Dominates Harrison-Dawson

VICTORIAN superstar Fernando Bale under-lined his standing as Australias numberone sprinter with another electrifying dis-play in the Group 1 Harrison-Dawson atSandown Park last Thursday night.

After becoming only the second sprinterto break 29 seconds at Sandown when win-ning his Harrison-Dawson heat in a jaw-dropping 28.98, the Andrea Dailly-trainedand Paul Wheeler-owned March 13 son ofKelsos Fusileer and Chloe Allen stifled bet-ting on the $100,000 to-the-winner final.

Drawn in box one, Fernando Bale was ini-tially installed at an unprecedented $1.15 inthe TABs Fixed Odds market before firminginto $1.05 on race night.

Fernando Bales market dominance wassuch that $18 chance Sisco Rage was thesecond elect.

And as the betting suggested, FernandoBales third Group 1 victory and first in hishome state following wins in the GoldenEaster Egg and National Derby atWentworth Park was never in doubt as heproduced another breathtaking front-run-ning exhibition.

Fernando Bale showcased his trademarkblistering early speed to lead by threelengths at the first turn and increased hisadvantage down the back before defeating

Weston East by three lengths. He clocked a scorching by normal stan-

dards 29.14, although it was the slowestof his four straight Sandown victories, withhis previous three wins coming in 29.10,29.04 and the near-record 28.98 heat per-formance, which was just .02 outside BekimBales 515m record.

It was Fernando Bales ninth successivewin all of which have been best of nightperformances and 17th from 22 overall, taking his career earnings past the half-mil-lion mark to $517,390.

He did everything we hoped he woulddo, co-trainer George Dailly said.

We didnt expect him to go as fast as theweek before because wed given him a cou-ple of weeks off before the Harrison-Dawson heats and when they fly freshsometimes theyre a bit flat the followingweek.

Hes going back to Sandown on Thursday(tonight) for the Bill Collins Memorial andhe should probably run a touch faster thisweek.

The track was a bog as well so his timewas still very good. He only beat the seconddog (Weston East) by three lengths but thatdog can run 29.30 and thats what it ran.

Im not a punter so it doesnt reallyworry me what price they are but its funnyto see a dog so short in a Group 1 race. Imjust glad weve got him.

Hes got that great early toe and runsphenomenal sectionals. I said to you lastweek that hes the epitome of the perfectgreyhound.

I used to think El Galo was the perfectdog because he would lead 99 times out of100 but the difference with Fernando Baleis that he can come from behind if he hasto.

Hes a beautiful animal and hell be agoldmine for Paul Wheeler when he goes tostud.

Fernando Bale will return to Sandown onThursday night where victory in therescheduled Group 3 Bill Collins Memoriallooks a fait accompli after he drew the railsalley for the second week running, havingbecome the fastest ever box one winner atthe track in the Harrison-Dawson.

The TABs initial market on the $25,000 to

the-winner Bill Collins Memorial hadFernando Bale at $1.20, with Lamia Bale, winner of the other Group 1 event at lastThursdays meeting, the Sapphire Crown,on the second line of betting at $4.80 frombox six.

Hes drawn the red again but theres nosuch thing as a certainty, Dailly cautioned.

His streak is going to end at some stageso well just keep enjoying it while it lasts.

Dailly confirmed that Fernando Bale willreturn to Wentworth Park, where hes wonsix of his seven starts, for the heats of theGroup 1 Peter Mosman Classic early nextmonth (June 6).

    Evidence Secures National Capital Spoils

Promising Austral stayer Evidence madeshort work of a talented field in lastSundays Toledo Trailers National CapitalDistance Championship Final (600m) atCanberra.

The well backed Scarp Missile ($4.50)led into the home straight the first timewith Evidence ($3.50 favourite) in hot pur-suit.

Evidence raced away with a four lengthlead through the catching pen from ScarpMissile, My Boy Snoop ($6.30) and BessyBoo ($5.10).

From there on the race was a no-brainerwith Evidence four lengths clear of thefield all the way to the winning post.

Evidence scored by four lengths fromMy Boy Snoop with Bessy Boo a lengthand a half away third in a new track record34.33.

The previous record of 34.35 was heldby Beer Assassin.

Evidence is raced by his breederLorraine Atchison and is trained by MarkBell.

The black dog, from the very successfulBrett Lee x Cristalle litter, has won five of15 starts with seven placings and$21,235.

He is a Wentworth Park winner in a best

of the meeting 29.74.Bell also trains

Evidences litter brotherLachy Balboa for Atchisonand he holds the Bulli 590metre record.

The star of this litter isMaitland Cup winnerSpacecraft and litter sisterFlamin Go has won threesprint races at WentworthPark.

Evidence finished last inhis first start at Richmondin October and he did notrace for three monthsafter suffering a fibulainjury.

Bell was full of praise forEvidence earlier this week.

Evidence is a fast dogand he runs a strong 600as you saw on Sunday,Bell informed.

I am hoping he will get700 and if he does he willmake into a handy stayer. His mother could run 700.

Evidence has run a 5.41 first split overthe sprint at Wenty so he will give themsomething to chase over 700.

At this stage I would say that his broth-er Lachy Balboa would be the better stay-er of the pair.

This pair have bigger fish to fry in thecoming weeks as I try to qualify them for

the GBOTA Stayers Challenge series. Weare heading to Gunnedah for heats overthe 580 metres on Saturday.

Then they will back up over 731 metresat Gosford next Tuesday. That will be theirfirst test over the longer trip.

The series is run on a pointscore andLachy Balboa has won heats at Temoraand Bulli but Evidence is yet to run in a

heat. He desperately needs points. The final at Wentworth Park on June 20

is worth $20,000 to-the-winner. I onlyhave three dogs racing and another fouryoung ones, Bell added.

Bell came to prominence through thedeeds of his former top sprinter and NSWGreyhound Of The Year Go Wild Teddy.

The latter was also a successful sire.

    Tommy Brislane Back On Track

STEVE White says hes never been asnervous as he was before trialling come-back sprinter Tommy Brislane at Bulli onTuesday morning.

Tommy Brislane hasnt raced since win-ning the Group 2 Bob Payne Spring Sprintat Wentworth Park on September 27 aftersuffering a career-threatening stopperbone injury in Melbourne while preparingfor the invitation-only Group 1 Topgun.

Prior to his untimely injury, which cameon the eve of the lucrative VictorianCarnival, Tommy Brislane had emerged asone of the most exciting sprinters in theland, winning 12 of his 16 starts, high-lighted by the Group 1 Dapto Megastar.

Tommy Brislane returned to trainerSteve Whites Nowra base in early Januaryto continue his rehabilitation and itappears Whites patient approach haspaid off with the well-bred September 12son of Premier Fantasy and Mary Virginiataking a major step towards what hadappeared at times to be an unlikely returnat Bulli on Tuesday.

Ive never been so nervous in my life,White said on Wednesday morning.

I couldnt sleep at all on Monday night

so it was a huge relief that everythingwent well.

Were still taking it week-to-week but Icouldnt be happier with what he did onTuesday and hes pulled up enormous thismorning. Hes running around the pad-dock and there are no signs of lamenessso itll be full steam ahead with caution.

I slipped him from the puppy boxes onTuesday and they reckon if they break 16seconds theyre going really good andTommy ran 15.90. He ran home in 6.20,which is flying.

Its been more than seven monthssince hes raced. I got him back fromVictoria in early January and the last fourweeks Ive been putting him up thestraight two or three times a week butyesterday was the first time hes beenbehind the tin lure.

I just took my time with him and I cantthank Jason Mackay enough for his helpand guidance.

The scary thing is that hes lost noth-ing. I said to Geoff (Slattery, owner) theother day that he hasnt lost anything andI think hes actually quicker!

The plan is to bring him back to Bullinext week and well do the same thingagain. Well just take it one week at atime but all going well well probably belooking at putting him in a stewards trialat Bulli over 400m in about a monthstime.

While White is cautiously optimisticabout Tommy Brislanes prospects ofmounting a successful comeback, itseems the multiple Group winner willnevertheless be lost to NSW, with Whitepreparing to relocate to Victoria.

Ive sold my property and Im lookingat buying Lenny Poores property at

Warragul, White said.Im going down next week to have a

good look but Ive stayed there plenty oftimes before and its only 50 minutes toSandown and 1 hours to The Meadowsand theres seven tracks within an hourso its a perfect location.

  • GREYHOUND Racing NSW (GRNSW) lastweek released details of its much publi-cized Welfare And Integrity Fund whichwill generate approximately $1.1m overthe next 12 months.

Introduced on the back of the dammingFour Corners expose into live baitingpractices, the peak body will channelfunds raised through the scheme intoenhanced welfare and integrity meas-ures, ensuring the sport is consistentwith community expectations.

Following last years comprehensiveGovernment Report into NSW greyhoundracing, many participants had held to thehope of brighter and more prosperoustimes ahead for 2015 and beyond.

The ever-flickering hope of movementto either the grossly inequitableIntercode Agreement or the far morerealistic taxation disparity, continues tobe a pipedream and with neither forth-coming, participants now face the grimrealization they will fund the newly intro-duced welfare scheme, only adding tothe strain currently gripping the sport.

Funds will be generated from three keyareas.

    Prizemoney will be reduced at

Wentworth Park by between 4-10% whichwill raise an estimated $480,000, therewill be increased costs for registering lit-ters and naming greyhounds which willraise $260,000, while there will be a $5reduction in all travel subsidies to gener-ate a further $350,000.

Major initiatives to be financed includeincreased resources for education andcompliance, engaging a Chief VeterinaryOfficer to oversee welfare and strategy, improvements to the Greyhounds AsPets program as well as a $350 rebate foranimal welfare groups that re-home grey-hounds.

The Welfare and Integrity Fund willsupport some important initiatives thatdemonstrate welfare and integrity arecentral to the success of the sport andthat the industry is willing to contributeto securing a sustainable and vibrantfuture for greyhound racing in NSW, saidGRNSW interim CEO Paul Newson.

GRNSW will continue to prioritise wel-fare and integrity to ensure the sport isconsistent with community expectationswhile investing in improved guidance forindustry participants and developing afuture strategic direction for the sportthat will attract new participants andencourage responsible industry develop-ment.

Greyhound Industry Consultative Group(GRICG) spokesperson Wayne Billettquestioned the timing of the GRNSW

    announcement.With the special commission of

inquiry currently underway why notawait their findings? Billett offered.

Any reduction (in prizemoney) isnthealthy, its more important than everthat we protect peoples investment andgive them confidence for breeding.

Late last week GRNSW also announcedit was suspending nominations for theBetfair Blue Paws scheme, with immedi-ate effect, pending a full review.

Blue Paws racing and payment ofbonuses for existing Blue Paws grey-hounds will continue.

Betfair Blue Paws is the NSW Breedersand Owners Incentive Scheme that wasestablished to promote, develop andencourage increased investment in theNSW breeding industry, said a GRNSWspokesperson.

With the release of the NationalGreyhound Welfare Strategy, and recogni-tion that GRNSW must engage with con-cerns around over-breeding and secureimproved welfare outcomes for grey-hounds, the objectives of the scheme willbe reviewed to determine whether itremains consistent with the strategicdirection of the sport in NSW.

The outcomes of the review will befinalised in June in conjunction with anannouncement about the future of thescheme.

When you break it down, whether its

perception or reality, the feeling fromparticipants is that theres plenty beingtaken, with very little heading back.

There is no doubt the industry we havetoday will be vastly different to the onewe have in a few years time.

Its strategic direction is yet to be deter-mined.

With ailing nominations, its expectedthat within the next week GRNSW willannounce its racing dates schedule for2015/2016 with several significantchanges introduced.

Its understood the Wentworth ParkFriday and Saturday night experiment isover.

Wentworth Park will now race onWednesday and Saturday nights with theMonday night slot, currently sharedbetween Wentworth Park Tab C andGrafton, to be solely held by Grafton.

Bulli will move from Wednesday nightto Wentworth Parks vacated Friday nightslot.

Its hoped these changes will help stim-ulate nominations and provide furtheropportunity for participants.

The current setup isnt working, so itshard to argue with the changes.

While its vitally important the industryregains the general publics trust, it isjust as important the people driving theindustry, that being the breeders, ownersand trainers, have their confidencerestored as well.

Rue De Khans Golden Oaks Triumph

Dean Swains pride and joy Rue De Kahnwon her second Group race and took herstakes earnings to more than $200,000when an easy winner of last SaturdaysGroup 3 Unibet Richmond Oaks Final(535m).

Rue De Kahn, the 2014 Group 1 NationalFuturity winner, was the fastest heat win-ner the previous week but Swain was dev-astated when she came up with the six boxin the final.

In last weeks Greyhound Recorder Swainsaid that from an inside box Rue De Kahnwould have been a good thing.

The second generation trainer need nothave been concerned as the Queenslandowned bitch was one of the first to leavethe boxes and it was a three way charge tothe first turn between Star Torana, Rue DeKahn and Good Odds Regina.

Star Torana ran off at the first turn whereRue De Kahn shot clear and she led bythree lengths down the back from StarTorana, Miss Sueko and Zipping Abby.

The first four at that stage were toremain in that order for the rest of therace.

Rue De Kahn ($4.50) won by 3 lengthsfrom Star Torana ($3.70) with Miss Sueko($5.10) a length away third in 30.71.

The winner is raced by QueenslanderMichael Laffey who sent the bitch toSwains father Sid to pre-train her for rac-ing.

Swain senor told his son that Rue DeKahn was very promising and he shouldcall Laffey and ask if he could train her.

Rue De Kahn had only raced five times

before the 2014 National Futurity series atUnibet Gardens. The bonnie bitch was a$21.00 chance when successful in theNational Futurity Final. Rue De Kahn hasnow won 18 races for prizemoney of$198,360.

At Richmond she has won four from six.For the 45 year old Swain it was a dream

realized when Rue De Kahn provided thethen rooftiler with his initial and onlyGroup 1 win in the National Futurity.

Fifteen months on Swain is a profession-al greyhound trainer with his twenty fourVineyard kennels full.

He is currently in eighth place in the2015 Metropolitan Trainers Premiership.

Swain said that Rue De Kahn deservedher Richmond Oaks win.

She deserved to win another Group raceas she has contested a number of Groupfinals since her Futurity win, Swain said.

She finished second in the Bob Payneand Gosford Cup. Also she was rattlinghome near the home turn in last yearsRichmond Oaks Final on to run into adead-end. Rue De Kahn was very unlucky.

I am thrilled to win a feature race on my

home track at Richmond.Dad has won two Richmond Oaks, two

Richmond Derbys and three Cannonballs.Dad was there on Saturday but it was myturn this time.

I would have loved my wife Danielle tobe there on Saturday night but she drewthe short straw and had to take three ofour dogs to Wentworth Park. We didnthave a winner there but Ellas Got Classwas a good thing beaten and I cant wait toget her over 600.

Michael Laffey didnt make the trip fromQueensland but he watched the race onSky.

He is a great owner and we have a num-ber of his dogs and more young ones onthe way.

Incredibly Rue De Kahn has had 59starts but she has never trialled or racedon a one turn track. She does go quick upa straight. So I am heading to Bulli onTuesday to trial Rue De Kahn over 400metres.

She will run in a Bulli Cup heat onFriday, Swain added.

Viper To Strike In Howard Ashton

PROMISING Victorian sprinter GalacticViper shapes as a serious threat to thelocals in Thursday nights semi-finals ofthe Group 3 Howard Ashton at Angle Park.

Galactic Viper, a February 13 son ofVelocette and Magic Elite, trained by DaveGeall, made his Angle Park debut in lastWednesday afternoons heats of the$25,000 to-the-winner Howard Ashton, anage-restricted series for South Australian-bred sprinters.

The winner of five from 16, GalacticViper had won three of his previous fourstarts in Victoria, including a smart all-the-way 29.78 Sandown success on April 19 athis previous appearance.

Galactic Viper was well-fancied in thefourth of five Howard Ashton heats, start-ing at $2.25 from box six, but was rundown by Wayne Ryans even-moneyfavourite Check Yo Self, beaten 3 lengthsin 29.96, the fastest qualifying perform-ance.

Galactic Vipers a nice young dog, DaveGeall said.

Hes probably more suited to one-turntracks at this stage. He hasnt been thatstrong at the end of his races and we hadsome doubts whether he could run the515m.

Hes more of a front-runner and the last50 metres is his issue around two bends. But his box manners are very good, hescoming out sweetly and his confidence issky high.

I took him to Sandown in preparationfor Angle Park and he trialled well and thenput in a couple of nice runs. We decidednot to race him again in the lead-up toAdelaide in case he got injured so we tri-alled him a couple of times instead and itadded up to nearly a month off going intothe heats.

He came out nice in his heat, like he hasbeen doing at Sandown, but he had a pret-ty smart dog sitting on him.

Id like to see him improve three or fourlengths in the semi-finals. Theres somenice young dogs from South Australia inthe series and well be relying on afavourable draw to help him run the dis-tance. He really needs one, two or threebecause hes been using up some petrolgetting across in his last few runs.

While Geall was pleased with GalacticVipers heat performance, the HowardAshton assault hasnt gone totally accord-ing to plan, with a preparatory expeditionto Angle Park in late April turning into adisaster.

I drove nine hours to give him a hit-outat the track but I was five minutes late andthey pulled him out, Geall explained.

I was actually going to be an hour and ahalf early but I hadnt been to Angle Parkfor a long time the last time was when abitch called Skrat was in the SA Oaks

(2007) and I got completely lost. I wentover a new overpass near Angle Park and Icouldnt get off it. I just kept going andgoing!

They knew I was coming so it was veryfrustrating and there was a very heateddiscussion but I will say Matt Corby (GRSACEO) and Paul Marks, the chief steward, handled the situation very professionally.

Galactic Viper was bred by MountGambier-based Robert Chuck but a chancemeeting after he broke-in impressively sawhim find his way to Gealls Lara kennel.

I bumped into Robert at KevinMcNamaras after the dog had broken invery fast, Geall recalled.

Robert was looking for a trainer inVictoria so I was in the right place at theright time.

Ive been lucky enough to have been ina number of Group finals. Bo Frazier was abeauty. He won the Rookie Rebel (2009)and was also in quite a few other Groupfinals.

My last Group runner was a bitch fromQueensland called Coco Benz in last yearsHealesville Cup.

The five Howard Ashton heat winners, intime order, were: Check Yo Self (29.96),Lady Xanthe (29.97), Bretts Magic (30.01),Girl From Alice (30.11) and Lucy Fergo(30.12).

    WA Derby Draw Favours Tureaud

PAUL Stuart is hoping box one and hometrack advantage will give classy sprinterTureaud a winning edge over Victorianstar Dyna Double One in Saturday nightsGroup 2 Brittons Formal Wear WA Derby.

Tureaud, a well-bred November 12 sonof Kinloch Brae and Starlight Delly, a littersister to Stuarts former champion stayerMiata, shapes as the main danger to theAndrea Dailly juggernaut in the $40,000to-the-winner Derby.

Four Derby heats were held atCannington last Saturday, with TeamDaillys Dyna Double One producing thestandout qualifying performance in theopening run-off.

After running fifth to superstar kennel-mate Fernando Bale in a heat of the Group1 Harrison-Dawson at Sandown, DynaDouble One, a March 13 son of Barcia Baleand Crystin Bale, made his second visit toPerth, having contested the Perth Cupseries in January/February.

Dyna Double One ran second to eventualwinner My Bro Fabio in his Perth Cup heatbefore winning the Group 3 CupConsolation in a fast 30.20.

Drawn in box five, Dyna Double Onestarted even-money favourite in his Derbyheat and after striding to the lead in the

back straight he careered away to an eightlength victory over fellow VictorianBerzerk, trained by Jason Thompson, in aflying 30.10.

The second fastest heat effort came fromlocal Tureaud, which secured his secondwin in three starts since resuming from athree-month spell when leading through-out in 30.37, trouncing Steve ShinnersCrashing Packs by 9 lengths.

It was Tureauds 11th win from 19 starts, with ten of his victories coming atCannington.

Tureauds chances of toppling DynaDouble One in the Derby decider thenreceived a massive boost when he drewthe rails, with his Victorian rival handedthe visitors draw in five for the secondweek running.

Tureaud is unbeaten in two starts frombox one, clocking 30.37 and 30.21 respec-tively at just his first and fourth starts, while hes also won two from two from boxtwo and three out of four from the threealley.

Tureaud came out beautifully onSaturday night, said Paul Stuart, who wonthe WA Derby with Pedrosa in 2010.

Hes always had the early speed, although he has been a bit hit and miss attimes. But since hes come back from hisspell hes been coming out pretty well.

Unfortunately hes always had nigglinginjuries. He can go like a world-beater fora couple of runs and then he goes lamebecause of a bone problem. He needed

some time off after the PerthCup series and hes been prettygood since he came back but Ionly take it one race at a time.

I was rapt when he ran 30.10first-up and then he went reallygood again on Saturday, although to be honest I was a lit-tle bit disappointed in his time. Ithought he might have gone abit quicker when he was on thebunny.

Hes probably going to haveto find a little bit on the clock tobeat Dyna Double One but hescapable of doing it.

On his night theres no doubtDyna Double One is one of thequickest dogs in the country butweve got a very good draw andDyna Double One is in box fiveso that could be a bit of a lev-eller.

Tureaud has pulled uptremendous after his heat runand aside from Dyna Double OneI wouldnt swap him for anyother dog in the race. Everythingis in his favour to run well sothere wont be any excuses onour behalf.

NSW visitor Aphorism, trainedby Shaun Evans, won his heat in 30.59 athis Cannington debut, defeating localKatsuro Sahara, trained by Mike Johnston, who raced 2008 Melbourne Cup winner

Surgeon. There was an all-WA finish to the remain-

ing heat, with Nero Bolt, trained by NickMinutillo, defeating Lexia Isaacs Fun Bossin 30.73.

RYLEY Sams, once rejected in Victoria asnot worth persevering with rocketedinto Peter Mosman Classic calculationswith his sixth win in 11 starts atWentworth Park last Friday night.

Trained at Cambridge Park by Bruce Kingfor his breeder Gary Oldfield, Ryley Samssnatched the lead in the middle stages foran easy win in 30.17.

The dog had previously won at WP in

29.90 and King will now set the youngsterfor the Peter Mosman heats on June 6.

Gary Oldfield bred Ryley Sam from his for-mer outstanding bitch Navada Sunrise, whoregistered 22 wins and 28 placings andearned $86,000 in stakes when trained byTracey Bruce.

Navada Sunrise won 14 races atWentworth Park, 13 over 520 metres andone over 720 metres so she was extremely

    versatile, Oldfield said after Fridaysrace.

I sent her February, 2013 litter byCollege Causeway to Victoria to be pre-trained but they were returned to mewith the recommendation that I shouldnot bother persevering with them.

But when they came back to NSW Isent them away to a local fellow to edu-cate them and he was astounded at theVictorian report because he reckonedthey had a stack of ability.

Because of that I asked him to recom-mend a trainer and he told me to lookno further than Bruce King and here weare winning races at Wentworth Park.

Bruce also trains Ryley Sams litterbrother Matsal Rocco and he won firstup at Richmond on May 6 while anoth-er from the litter, Navada Scorpion,

broke down athis only start butis back in workand triallingwell.

Ryley Sams isnamed after agrandson of mywife Faye andmyself, whileMatsal Roccogets his namefrom myyoungest daugh-ters triplets.

She is marriedto an Italian fel-low and hertriplets arecalled Matteo,Salvatore andRocco.

Bruce King hasbeen training for40 years andwhile he has hadfew runners inrecent times he had great success withgreyhounds like Zen Chi Flyer, Ling LingRoo and Zen Chi Blue.

Zen Chi Flyer won nine from 38 races inthe early 1990s and as he has always done,King placed her to great advantage, withfive of her six Wentworth Park wins infourth and fifth grade events.

Ling Ling Roo broke the Dapto 508mrecord and won 10 from 37 races between2002 and 2004 while Zen Chi Blue won 10

of 91 starts from 2007 to 2009.I learned the art of checking dogs for

injuries from former top trainer SamJingles Cauchi and at one stage I waschecking 40 dogs each week, even travel-ling down to the south coast in that role,King said on Friday.

I nominated Ryley Sams for tonightsrace because the final is worth $,8000 tothe winner but the dogs long term goal isobviously the Peter Mosman Classic.

Ryley Sams, pictured here with his owner Gary Oldfield after hisblistering win on Friday night (pics: Craig Youll)

THE tenacity and determination dis-played by Chasing The Line to score hisfifth win in a dozen Wentworth Parkstarts last Friday night was a far cry fromthe greyhounds early career form.

Chasing The Line was crowded for roomat the first turn but bullocked his waythrough the pack to be a distant secondbehind tearaway leader Master Gee on theback straight.

But Chasing The Line made light of hisearly buffeting to win running away byone-and-a-half lengths, taking his recordto seven wins and three seconds from 23races.

After the race owner-trainer LorenHarborne said: When he first started rac-ing Chasing The Line didnt like getting abump but he has developed into a verygood chaser.

Even so, I wasnt confident about hischances tonight because we had a horrortrip to the track from my home atBudgewoi.

The M1 was closed due to an accidentand we were diverted through Berowra.

Budgewoi is just over 100km north ofSydney, in the Wyong Shire, but the trip toGlebe took Harborne and Chasing TheLine an excruciating four hours.

The dog seemed to travel well but

when I weighed him at the track I wasshocked, he weighed in at 31.7kg which isextremely light for him, Harborne added.

Chasing The Lines weight had fluctuat-ed between 32.1kg and 33kg in his sixraces leading up to Friday night and thedog had not tipped the scales at 31.7kgsince finishing second at WP in March.

Harborne intends stepping up ChasingThe Line to a middle distance shortly.

He won a fourth and fifth grade tonightbut I think he will be getting up to topgrade soon at Wentworth Park so it mightbe time to step him up in distance, shesaid.

Chasing The Line finishes strongly soIm sure he will get 600m but I dont knowabout him becoming a stayer.

Master Gees trainer Christine Proctorwas not disappointed by her greyhoundssecond placing behind the strong finishingChasing The Line.

Master Gee is a better greyhound onone turn tracks like Maitland and Bullithan he is at Wentworth Park, Proctorsaid later.

And when I saw Chasing The Line in sec-ond place behind my dog on the backstraight I knew he would have troubleholding him off.

Paua Shots Impressive VictoryTWO owners who experienced the highsand lows of the sport with their first grey-hound Pebbles Knew were back on top atWentworth Park last Friday night whenPaua Shot scored an impressive win in theNowra To Wenty final.

Paua Shot is trained at Kanahooka on thesouth coast by Robyn Goodwin for MichaelKempston, owner of the Ameroo Hotel atDubbo, and John Condon, proprietor of abathroom renovation business at Dapto.

Goodwin trained Pebbles Knew to wineight of 19 starts but after winning a heat ofthe 400m Richmond Cannonball onFebruary 15, 2014, Pebbles Knew broke aleg in the final a week later.

But worse was to come for her rookieowners.

After Pebbles Knew came in season andwas sent away to a country property to bemated, she was bitten by a snake and diedbefore she had the chance to breed.

Michael and John asked Robyn and I tolook for another dog for them and I foundPaua Shot, Robyns husband Glen Goodwinsaid last Friday night.

I bought him on their behalf from hisbreeder, David Jones of Wagga, from whomI have bought dogs previously and who isgood to do business with.

David trialled Paua Shot over 400m atDubbo and he broke 23 seconds so webought the dog off that trial.

Although Paua Shot won over 400m atBulli in 22.67sec on April 15 Robyn and Ibelieve he is better suited on two turntracks like Nowra and Wentworth Park thanhe is on a one turn circuit like Bulli.

He won tonights race the way we hopedhe would, by running straight to the firstturn from box eight and then crossing to therails on the back straight and finishingstrongly.

We were very happy with his time of30.07sec because only Are Jip, a top graderwho has won eight races at Wenty, wentfaster all night, clocking 29.90.

Robyn and I only have three greyhoundsin work at present because we have justlaunched our own limousine business, afterI ran a trucking outfit for 30 years.

The Goodwins, who have been trainingsince 1979, have had outstanding grey-hounds such as Run Aglow, Corby andShadow King.

Run Aglow was a 28kg pocket rocket whowon a heat and semi-final of the 2006National Derby at Wentworth Park and fin-ished fourth to Brother Knows in the final,Robyn recalled.

Then we tookhim to TheMeadows for theAustralian Cup andhe trialled 30.07secthere the samenight the Melbournestar Supermanclocked 30.15.

But Run Aglowpulled up lame aftertrialling up thestraight a few daysafter his hit-out atThe Meadows andwas finished.

Shadow Kingwon nine of 23 racesduring 2010 whileCorby broke theDubbo 318m recordin a heat of the bigmaiden classic thereand took out the $10,000 final in April,2011.

Corby won nine of his 17 races for us butwe think Paua Shot might be the fastestgreyhound we have trained.

The superbly bred Paua Shot made light work of his oppositiontaking out Friday nights Nowra To Wenty Final

SYDNEY trainer Minnie Finn and Melbourneowner-breeder Glenn Rounds combined towin the 2014 Wentworth Park MagicMaiden with Anything Less and were backin force at the track again last Friday withOnce A Drifter opening his metropolitanaccount.

Once A Drifter took his record to threewins, five seconds and two thirds from 11starts by easily running down tearaway pace-maker No Jockey Needed to win the Bulli ToWenty final.

Finns greyhound was sixth away but afterrunning into the back of a rival approachingthe first turn, secured a rails run goingthrough the catching pen to be a distant sec-ond in the middle stages.

But he showed great strength to not onlyoverhaul the speedy No Jockey Needed, butto win by more than four lengths.

Once A Drifter can certainly run but he isextremely awkward, Finn said after therace.

Its a relief to see him get around a dogwithout a collision.

Once A Drifter was whelped in January,2013, so he will be given his chance in thegroup one Peter Mosman Classic heats atWenty on June 6.

Apart fromAnything Less, Finnhas also had recentsuccess with DownEvery Road, anothertalented greyhoundraced by GlennRounds.

Down Every Roadwon a heat andsemi-final of the2015 WP MagicMaiden before fin-ishing third to BlackBear Lee in the finalon April 4.

    Down Every Road

won at Richmond 48 hours before Once ADrifters WP victory so he will now head tothe city.

Because Down Every Road won a heat andsemi-final of the Magic Maiden those winswere classified as a single success, Finn saidon Friday.

So he wasnt eligible for a start at a WentyFriday or Saturday meeting even though heis a very smart dog.

The eye-catching run from the beaten divi-sion in Once A Drifters race was the thirdplacing by the Jenny Brown-trainedWindaroo Lad.

The dog went into the race with two winson the big Bulli circuit but ruined whateverchance he had on Friday with a poor get-away from box eight.

He came out hopeless, Brown lamentedlater.

But I was happy with the way he sweptaround the field to be third on the backstraight.

Because he was in a Bulli to Wenty Final Ididnt have time to prepare him properly forhis first Wentworth Park race.

Windaroo Lads only look at the track hadbeen a hand-slip after last weeks Mondaymeeting at Wenty.

Pop The Cork Confirms Star Status

Last Thursdays Young Guns final atAlbion Park was turned into a one actaffair by boom young dog Pop The Cork.

The Peter Ruetschi-trained son of BrettLee and Ima Geisha Girl whizzed aroundthe 520 metre course in a slick 29.66 frombox two to land the $10,220 first prize forowner Paddy Twohig who lives inMelbourne.

Strength at the finish was a highlight ofthe win with Pop The Cork registering aslick 12.45 for the final sectional.

Paddy has been up here and stayed withus a few times. He is happy to let me planthe path forward for the dog, Ruetschisaid.

That path includes heading back toAlbion Park tonight for a heat of the MickByrne Memorial fifth grade series. The

restricted age Young Guns was apenalty free event, hence Pop TheCork still being eligible for fifthgrade.

Id love to win a group one withthe dog, not only because of themoney, Ruetschi said.

Its tragic what Queensland grey-hound racing has been through latelyand Id love to see this dog help putthis state back on the map.

He can do a few things wrong, such as coming out of the boxes a bitordinary. He can get away with that inthe restricted age races at this stage.Hopefully he can put everythingtogether when the time comes totake the step up to the top level ofracing.

Group one races just around thecorner are the Peter Mosman Classicat Wentworth Park (heats June 6) andAlbion Parks Winter Carnival Cup(heats June 25). Ruetschi says bothraces are under consideration.

Its been several years six to be precise since Tony Brett trained the winner ofthe Albion Park feature maiden named inhonour of his late father, Dave.

Last Thursday, Aeroplane Jack gave Bretthis third win in the event following victo-ries by Pinch Bar in 2007 and VelocityForce in 2009.

Our family is extremely proud that theBrisbane club sees fit to run the Dave BrettMemorial as afeature raceevery year,Tony said.

The son of Bekim Bale and PearlNapolean won his heat in 30.27 thenclocked a much slower 30.57 in lastweeks roughhouse final.

    Tonys Dave Brett Three-peat!

Its pleasing to see two heats of theWinter Chase over 710 metres at AlbionPark tonight.

Races over that distance have been fewand far between at Albion Park this year. And nominations for 600 metres eventsthere have been way down too.

Overlapping tonights Group 1 SandownCup final means we were never going tosee the likes of Space Star and Sweet It Iscontest the Winter Chase. Talented Bitches Chasing Gold At Gosford

Camden sprinter Camden Valleyway setthe time standard for Gosfords LadbrokesGoldmine heats on Tuesday when she wonthe opening heat by eight lengths in29.63.

Raced and trained by Doug Rogers,Camden Valleyway had raced exclusively atRichmond prior to her venture to the cen-tral coast on Tuesday.

She is a daughter of Irish sire CollegeCauseway which is a son of Go Wild Teddy.

In her six starts at Richmond, the blackbitch won four and was runner-up inanother.

She recorded her fastest time of 30.61 onMay 2.

In the Goldmine heat Camden Valleywaywas quickly away from box five and she ledthroughout.

The feature of her win was her run hometime of 12.69 which was .29 quicker thanany of the other heats.

Camden Valleyways first split of 4.44was only the third fastest of the four heats.

The speedy and ultra-consistent Jingjingwas the second fastest heat winner in29.91 after a quick first split of 4.33.

The experienced Jingjing has won eightof her 15 starts with five placings.

She was also starting at Gosford for the

first time.A near faultless beginner, Jingjing will be

hard to run down in next Tuesdays final.Hunter Valley sprinter Devine Awe in his

61st start ran on strongly to win the fourthand final heat in 29.96.

Winner of the 2013 Maitland FutureStars Maiden, Devine Awe is raced by VickiSills and he is trained by her partner, PatParrelli.

A son of Lochinvar Marlow, Devine Awehas won nine races with 25 placings andprizemoney of $30,000.

The black dog, a November 2011 whelp-ing, is the veteran of the Gosford GoldmineFinal.

The remaining heat went to the centralcoast-trained Two Parts Freak which led allthe way in 30.02.

A daughter of Fabregas, Two Parts Freakis trained by Phillip Wall and she won aWentworth Park maiden in 30.19 inNovember.

Chris Nutt, trainer of Jingjing, was rapt inhis bitchs performance.

I was very happy with her as she hadnever seen the Gosford track, Nutt said.

Jingjing pulled up sore in her previousstart at Wentworth Park so I couldnt trialher at Gosford.

I was a bit worried because she was 11days on the lead but she went great. I dontknow much about Gosford sections but thelocals told me her first split was very fast.

With that run under her belt I wouldexpect that Jingjing would improve a fairbit and I believe a 29.70 run is not beyond

her. This bitch is such a reliable beginnerand she is gutsy.

Jingjing has raced in a Group 1 Final, theNational Futurity, and really she is wellplaced in this race.

She has pulled up great and is full of lifethis morning. I will probably just free gal-

lop her this week.I can give her a run up the straight but

probably not.Camden Valleyway went terrific on

Tuesday and she will be the one to beat,Nutt added on Wednesday morning.

HELENSBURGH coalminer Craig Ralphsbroke a 16 year drought when the RuthKing-trained Cy Tolliver gave him his firstWentworth Park win as an owner lastSaturday night.

After being a distinct last at the firstturn, the wide running Cy Tolliver sweptaround his rivals to be second on thehome bend before careering away to winby over two lengths.

I have owned greyhounds for 16 yearsand this is my first Wentworth Park win-ner, a jubilant Ralphs said after CyTollivers win.

There have been a couple of winners atThe Meadows in Melbourne but to win arace in Sydney is special.

I have always only been in the sport forfun and I have had a lot of that thanks todogs trained for me by Ruth for the past16 years.

The ownership of Cy Tolliver is sharedby my father Max, who is 75, and my 22-year-old son James so it is a family affair.

And I bought Cy Tolliver as a littlepuppy for $1500 from my best mate, PeterStanford, who breeds and rears grey-hounds at Wallerawang, near Lithgow.

Peter is a retired police officer and CyTolliver is a son of his brood bitch PearlNapoleon.

She has been a wonderful producer andthis week alone she has whelped threegood class winners in three starts.

Brisbane trainer Tony Brett won the$10,000 Albion Park Maiden with PearlNapoleons son Aeroplane Jack whileanother of her progeny, Ride The Rails, fol-lowed his third placing in theWarrnambool Cup with a win at Sandownon Thursday night.

Cy Tolliver can run like the wind on hisown and hand-slipped in 24.15 in a post-to-post hit-out before he ever raced atWentworth Park.

But he virtually goes around the outsidefence in his races so he covers a lot ofextra ground. - Jeff Collerson
