This week my thoughts and prayers have been with the parents of little Charlie Gard. This entire episode must have been a nightmare for them. I am sure that any parent would fight tooth and nail for their child, but in doing so they can easily lose the bigger picture. This experience has been exacerbated by the media, where private grief has become a public commodity. The majority of us will have an opinion on this issue but only a few individuals will be in possession of all the facts. The general public was very generous in giving over £1.3 million for Charlie’s treatment but when the Doctor in America was questioned, via video link last week, he had to admit that he had not even read the complete medical file on the child. A few months ago the Doctor was asked, by the Hospital, to come to see the child but it was only when the Judge pleaded with him did he attend Great Ormond Street Hospital to see Charlie. After this visit he agreed that his treatment would not benefit Charlie. The Judge has been asked to decide what is the best course of action for Charlie, and this may well differ from what is best for his parents. The doctors wish to help as much as they can but they also need to care for further sick children, who possibly could recover as a result of the care of these dedicated professionals. This whole incident has more losers than winners. The Church’s Moral Theologians look at quality, as well as, quantity of life. However, depending on where you stand, there are lots of possible differing solutions. Mgr Bernard

THANK YOU FROM PETER HANRATTY
“On my retirement as Headteacher of St George's Catholic School after 27 years and 8 months,
I would like to thank a long list of people, firstly for the recent
beautiful mass and many school celebrations, and also for the long happy years that I have
enjoyed at St George's. I have been overwhelmed by everyone's messages and kind words.
My thanks go to Bishop Declan, Mgr Bernard and Fr David for the very special mass and for all their support for our school. To all the parents, past and present, and
parishioners, I thank you for your trust in me and your kind words too. In thanking the faithful and hard-working Governors of the
school throughout the years, I have to say it has been an honour to work for you. Lastly, but by no
means least, to all the wonderful children and fantastic staff that I have worked with throughout my time as Headteacher I wish to say a huge thank you for all your love
and hard work. I have been blessed to work at such a great place with
great people for all these years. You will always be in my prayers.”
