So Easter has arrived and the weather is significantly better; everything is starting to look brighter and everyone is becoming more cheerful. Well, at least for us here in Taunton, but not for the Catholic parish of Notre-Dame Paris, which as we know, has been devastated by an immense fire. Initially it looked as if everything would be lost but thankfully, now it would appear that all hope has not vanished as the cathedral walls seem to be intact. It will be a long and expensive process, nevertheless, this iconic building should rise again from the ashes. The story of the fire in some ways mirrors our Easter story, when death and destruction look as if they have won the day. Yet, only a few days later, a new story emerges, one of triumph over disaster. Overwhelming despair is gripped by a new hope, the real challenge being years of hard work and dedication. This mirrors the challenges faced by the Church today. Mired by the sin and tragedy of abuse and cover-ups, we must now undertake the hard work and reality of confronting our past and building a better, more transparent future, for ourselves and for the generations to come. The Church is a living evolving community, not a massive building. It is all about the people; we claim to be the Easter People so let us go forward in the faith of the Apostles and proclaim the Good News of the Lord: Jesus is alive and Risen! Alleluia!
Mgr Bernard
