This entire episode must have been a nightmare for them. I am sure that any parent would fight tooth and nail for their child, but in doing so they can easily lose the bigger picture. This experience has been exacerbated by the media, where private grief has become a public commodity. The majority of us will have an opinion on this issue but only a few individuals will be in possession of all the facts. The general public was very generous in giving over £1.3 million for Charlies treatment but when the Doctor in America was questioned, via video link last week, he had to admit that he had not even read the complete medical file on the child. A few months ago the Doctor was asked, by the Hospital, to come to see the child but it was only when the Judge pleaded with him did he attend Great Ormond Street Hospital to see Charlie. After this visit he agreed that his treatment would not benefit Charlie. The Judge has been asked to decide what is the best course of action for Charlie, and this may well differ from what is best for his parents. The doctors wish to help as much as they can but they also need to care for further sick children, who possibly could recover as a result of the care of these dedicated professionals. This whole incident has more losers than winners. The Churchs Moral Theologians look at quality, as well as, quantity of life. However, depending on where you stand, there are lots of possible differing solutions.
