K.I.S.S. Theory vs. Kaizen Theory: Simple theory’s work best
I heard about Keep It Simple, Stupid (K.I.S.S.) in AA, early on in my sobriety. I never really liked the
meaning of the last S, stupid, because you don’t have to be stupid to complicate things. But, I totally
relate to the intent of the meaning.
Sobriety has been good to me. I am now living the dream I had
fantasized about in 1989 when I was three years sober. Doing the
program seemed so big at the time, so impossible, so delay tactics
made sense. But one day at a time, one step at a time, one meeting
at a time with commitment, patience, and yes, working the
principles of the program, I continued to make choices that moved
me in the direction to making many of my dreams come true.
I have seen many others in AA do the same thing. From going
back to school, getting degree’s to buying homes or cars, to practicing simple behaviors like paying
their bills on time, having a car that runs to genuinely caring about others and being of service to
them achieved.
Am I saying these kinds of accomplishment were achieved by keeping things simple and taking one
step at a time? I didn’t say there wasn’t work involved. That our journey isn’t long and arduous;
because the word trudging comes to mind, but there is the Kaizen theory that supports our AA ‘keep
it simple’ and ‘one step at a time’ or ‘one day at a time,’ slogans.
The story of the Kaizen miracle started in 1930, by Sakichi Toyoda, founder of Toyota. Then later, in
1950 Toyota implemented quality circles leading to the development of Toyota’s unique “Toyota
Production System.' Toyota System is a system of continuous improvement in quality, technology,
processes, company culture, productivity, safety, and leadership, using the Kaizen theory. In 1986,
Kaizen became a fad the world over through Masaaki Imai who introduced the Kaizen model to the
Western world.
Soon others introduced the concept, like author Robert Maurer, One Small Step Can Change Your
Life: The Kaizen Way, which I just discovered recently, myself. So, what is the point? We AA’ers are
pretty smart when you think about it.
Perhaps our founders did hear about Kaizen magic. Or perhaps one being a doctor was educated
enough to know that the part of our brain, the amaglia or reptilian brain controls our fear center. If
something seems too big, too hard, and will take too long it convinces us to slow down, stop and
ruminate those fearful thoughts that support our feelings of resistance.
Who knows and who cares really, but I just found it interesting and supportive of our recovery
program; to not drink one day at a time, work our steps one day at a time and by all means, live life
one day at a time, because really, that is all we have.
