The wonderful story of the Prodigal Son (Gospel) is the cherished account of God’s love for us. It is our story because we identify with the father and his two sons. It captures human frailty, desire, dreams, failures, dying spiritually, survival and resurrection to life! The invitation to find one’s true self demands effort. Nothing happens without the sincerity of heart to take an honest look at one’s self. What motivates us? Ash Wednesday, we heard God’s message: “Rend your hearts!” It is not a condemnation or threat, but an invitation to be genuine and change. We heard the covenant God makes with us: “I put before you Life and Death, blessing and curse. Choose Life!” Discovering what God means by this is the challenge of faith. Sounds simple, since we choose life. Jesus pulls the rug from under our feet by telling us: “Whoever saves their life will lose it and whoever loses their life, for My sake, finds it.” From start to finish, we are free to decide for our selves. The temptations Jesus faced in the desert are our own. The message is clear: what appeals and appears desirous easily leads to death! What is truly life-giving and a blessing is to choose for richer relationships rather than getting wrapped up in self! This is deadly, giving no life to others and demeaning, if not destroying, what is best in self, the result of choosing things over people. Welcome to the human race! That’s the prodigal son in all of us. He chooses, squandering foolishly, ending up starving as the lowest of servants. He comes to his senses; he will survive! His return to life begins with recognizing and admitting his choices are all self-centered. The great surprise, and model for us, is the father. He joyously forgives and restores his son freely! It is God’s compassion, faithfulness and mercy to all of us. It is God’s message and teaching too: “Go, and do likewise to each other.” In this way, we choose life, not death. The elder son is us, pure and simple. He resists his brother’s return and blessing. He’s worked faithfully, but never believed in his father’s love, so earns it by obedient service. He justifies his anger and jealousy because his is in the right! Self-righteousness is a subtle and concealed choice of death people make. St. Paul (2nd reading) sums up the truth of choosing life in Jesus. We have become a new creation” because we live and give God’s truth & love God’s truth and love to others. Rejoice

RESPECT LIFE As we pray for the end of abortion, let us pray for the expansion of the pregnancy help center movement worldwide. Scripture: The dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it. She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne. - Revelation 12:4-5 -Excerpts from the 40 Days of Life Campaign

Servite Father Chris Krymski, the National Shrine of St. Peregrine Ministry Director in Chicago, is leading a ten day tour to St. Peregrine’s in Italy, October 1st through October 10th, 2016. Information is available at the entrance area of the Church and in the parish office.

The Altar and Rosary Society wishes to thank everyone who attended our 2016 La Festa d’Amore dinner and dance at Lakewood Country Club. It was a special evening, with Russ Canino providing the music and entertainment. The Altar & Rosary Society extends special thanks to the individuals and businesses that donated items for both the live and silent auctions.

Everyone’s generosity helped ensure the event's success. Warmest regards, La Festa d’Amore Dance Committee
