Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord| Domingo de Ramos“De la Pasión del Señor” 2

His name is ‘God-is-great’. He was only 11 years old and he literally saved my life. After I was shot in the stomach, I covered the wound with my right hand to prevent too much loss of blood and kept driving with a damaged front tire. With the help of God, I was able to get away to a small truck station where I sought help. I had lost a lot of blood at the time and was growing weaker and weaker. I collapsed on the ground and pleaded desperately for help. The people were horrified and seemed sympathetic, but they did nothing. The trucks there were broken, so they had no vehicle to take me to the hospital. I prayed, asked endlessly for help and tried to stay alive.

This went on until God-is-great appeared on the scene. I must have been there for an hour. As soon as he saw me and my condition, he ran to his dad and asked him to bring his vehicle to save a dying man. His dad owns a van he uses commercially to carry loads for people. His name is SonyMopo. The van was loaded with goods, but he brought it anyway and set me on top of the goods. But there was a problem. The nearest clinic was in a town I had passed before I was attacked by the armed bandits. So they had to go past the criminals before getting to the clinic. So, SonyMopo, an ex-cop, got his gun, got into a passenger’s seat and asked God-is-great (the 11-year-old) to drive. As he approached, he informed his dad that the criminals were still operating and robbing other motorists. SonyMopo started shooting his gun in the air to disperse the bandits. They ran into the bush allowing us to get to the clinic. God-is-great later took their van home while his dad secured an ambulance with which he drove me to UBTH (University of Benin Teaching Hospital), an hour and thirty minutes away.

So God-is-great along with his father and another good Samaritan, who stayed in the back nursing and encouraging me, saved my life. They are poor people. On Sunday January 17th, the entire family – SonyMopo, his wife, God-is-great and his four siblings – visited me at the hospital after their Sunday service. I was overcome with emotion. I hugged him, thanked him and promised to be responsible for his education until he graduates college.

This is where you, my friends, come in. I opened an education account on behalf of God-is-great. My goal is to raise $10,000. In the Nigeria context, I believe this amount will go a long way. So, I am asking you, all my friends, to donate generously towards this young man’s education (Chase Account# 3866056782 Nickname God is great). I understand he wants to be a lawyer. Please, let us all help him to achieve his dreams so he can make a difference in a country that desperately needs it.

Thank you so much in anticipation.

A year ago we didn’t get to celebrate Palm Sunday and Holy Week as a parish community in person due to the Pandemic. This year we get to with a few modifications but we get to do this together in person. This past year has been tough for many especially when it comes to their faith. With that said though, we have reached the light at the end of the tunnel and it is so wonderful to be where we are today. I am a firm believer that God places things where they need to be and today is a perfect example of that. I didn’t plan it this way, but it just so happens that today, Palm Sunday, is the day in our program that we are talking about the Paschal Mystery with our year 1 teens. I love when things work out like this and its so awesome to start Holy Week off with our teens this way. So, things may be a little different this year, but we get to be together in the church celebrating Holy Week together and I think that is awesome! Its time for things to start returning to a somewhat normal state of things and now, more than ever, we need to turn to God and grow in our faith and bring others back to the church. Upcoming Events: 3/31-Youth Group in Person

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord| Domingo de Ramos“De la Pasión del Señor” 7

HOLY WEEK For the Palm Sunday Gospel, we return to the Gospel ac-cording to Mark. The account of the Passion takes up nearly one-third of Mark’s entire Gospel and, of all the evangelists, he is the one who presents the details most graphically. He depicts the humanity of Jesus most intensely, describing his sufferings thoroughly. Mark portrays Jesus as a complete fulfillment of the “Suffering Servant” of Isaiah, the obedient, humble slave dying on a cross of whom Paul speaks in Philippians. But it is important to remember that we call this “Holy Week” and not “sad week” or “suffering week,” for each of the readings today, even the lamentations of the psalm, end in the promise of the strength and hope that is granted by God to those who faithful-ly give of themselves in love. As we enter into this week through these readings, we must reflect deeply on the suffer-ings of Jesus, but still be confident in the joy of risen, eternal life that awaits all of us who faithfully walk with him through these days. First Reading — In spite of my sufferings I am not dis-graced. I am not put to shame (Isaiah 50:4-7). Psalm — My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? (Psalm 22). Second Reading — Christ emptied himself, and God filled this emptiness with exaltation (Philippians 2:6-11). Gospel — The account of Christ’s passion according to Mark (Mark 14:1 — 15:47 [15:1-39]). Salmo — Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado? (Salmo 22 (21)). VIRTUS: PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN

TRAINING

ALL PARISH VOLUNTEERS NEED TO

“Your child’s security and safety are a priority for us at Sacred Heart Church. Please supervise your children at all times especially if they leave during Mass”

DID YOU KNOW?

Abusive behavior is nonconsensual The term “consensual” implies that a person freely agrees to do something and understands what they are consenting to do. When it comes to child abuse, no child can give consent, or freely agree, to engage in inappropriate behavior with an older person – however children can be manipulated such that it appears they have consented in some way out of deference to the abuser’s authority. This is why abuse often involves misuse or abuse of power over a victim and can be accomplished through a range of inappropriate behaviors that give the abuser the upper hand. To read more from the VIRTUS® article “Early Identification is Crucial,” visit https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
