The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.

— Mark 1:15

Metanoia

After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Metanoia is the foundation of an authentic Christian spirituality. In this gospel, Jesus calls would-be disciples to metanoia, which is a profound experience of change of heart or conversion or repentance. The clearest example of metanoia is the first three steps of the Alcoholic Anonymous program (the 12 steps). Here are the steps, (1) We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable (emphasis is mine), (2) Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity, and (3) Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. Years ago, a parishioner, Bob, whose life had been devastated by drugs and alcohol shared his testimony with me. At rock bottom, he was introduced to the AA program. Believing that Jesus had the power to set him free (Jn 8:38), he took the first three steps whole heartedly and was completely cured of his addiction. He had a metanoia. When Bob returned to his sponsor some time later and informed him that he was completely sober, his sponsor refused to believe him. He told Bob that he had been in the AA and sponsoring people for the past 25 years and have never heard such a thing. At that point, which was a year later, Bob was on fire with the things of Christ, which was one of the fruits of metanoia.

Metanoia is a spiritual experience that turns one’s life upside down. It is a radical change of heart and life. The Evangelicals and Pentecostals often wrongly call it being “born again” because it feels that way. Catholic theology refers to it as the reception of “the actual grace” of conversion. There is no space here to explain the difference between them. However, suffice it to say that metanoia is purely supernatural. It is a powerful encounter between the soul and the overwhelming power of Jesus. The only part we play in the process is to sincerely ask or seek for it.

So seek for the awesome experience of metanoia – close your eyes at this moment and say, “Jesus reveal yourself to me, come into my life and transform me.” Say this prayer every day for the next one week and see what will happen. We must humbly admit that we are powerless over our sins (or our demons) and accept Jesus’ power to set us free. For only those who seek will find the Lord of salvation (Mt 7:7).

Metanoia

When I was in high school and learned the phrase “Salvation History” my first thought was, “How can there be a history of salvation if it only happened once or even will only happen in the future?” Also, as a high school student I loved U.S. History but wasn’t a fan of Salvation History. When I got to college I began to have an appreciation for Salvation History because of the fact that it is the history of our church. Our scripture is rich with stories of our church history and in fact can be pretty juicy when you really get down to it. This weekend we talked about salvation history with our year 1 teens and about how important it is to know our church’s history so that we learn from it and can have a better appreciation and understanding of the gospels as well as scripture in general.
