Let God Love You Into Loving Him

“I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son." Gen 22:12

Saints Anthony of Egypt, Benedict, Francis of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola, Elizabeth of Hungary, to mention but a few, all gave up a life of wealth and comfort for their love of God. Beginning with Jesus Christ, all the martyrs gave up their lives for the love of God. They made the ultimate sacrifices for the will of God. To demonstrate his faithfulness and devotedness, Abraham held nothing back including his only begotten son Isaac. Seeing this, the Angel of the Lord exclaimed: “I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son." Actions speak louder than words! Our actions are shadows of our thoughts – they reflect our hearts’ dispositions. Thus, the actions of the Patriarchs, the saints and the martyrs reflected their inner love of and faithfulness to God. So what do your own actions reflect? When God, his angels, and people around you look at you, what actions can they look at and say: “Now we know how devoted you are to God”? What are you holding back from God? What powerful sacrifices have you made because of your love of God or because of your eagerness to do his will? It must however, be emphasized that holding nothing back from God takes a special grace of God. Unless God helps us, we cannot give our all. Unless we are carried by grace we cannot yield our will and life to God. Before we can love God selflessly, we must be compelled by God’s tremendous love for us. It is God’s love that enkindles our love. That’s why St. John said, “In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins” (1 Jn 4:10). Seeing is believing, just as experience is the best teacher. As human beings, we react and respond to what we see, feel and/or experience. The Patriarchs, the saints and martyrs were all responding to God’s overwhelming love. You too can respond like them if you let God love you, if you let him help you experience his overwhelming love. It is metanoia or conversion that opens the door to the mystery of God’s immense love. During this Lent ask for it. Ask God to let Jesus, the incarnate love of God come into your life like never before.

Deja Que Su Amor Te Enamore

¿A qué te aferras?

When I was a football player in High School, I was constantly told to fight through the pain of my injuries. No matter how badly I was suffering, if I could practice or play in a game I would push the pain aside and move forward. That was only physical suffering and I was good at dealing with it. When I went through spiritual suffering in my life, I was unprepared for how to handle it. I was conditioned to push away physical suffering but not any other type of suffering. When it comes to spiritual suffering I always think about the poem “Footprints in the Sand.” Simply stated, “The times there were two sets of footprints in the sand were the times I walked with you. The times where there was only one set of footprints were the times I carried you.” Or the other way which is probably a little more realistic “the times there was a single line in the sand were the times I dragged you kicking and screaming.” We need to remember that Christ didn’t come to take away suffering, he came to redeem it. This past week we talked about redemptive suffering during youth group and we continue this journey through lent. We all have suffering. When was the last time you offered it up to God? When was the last time you considered the suffering in your life and looked for God’s hand? Lent is a time to reflect, pray and give up our suffering to God to be redeemed through our suffering.
