Book Review
Review of the book ‘Divaswapna” by Gijubhai Badheka
Review written By Dr. Monali Kakade, Assistant Prof., AICESR
About Author –
Girijashankar Bhagwanji Badheka (15th
Nov. 1885-23rd
June1939) was an educator who helped to
introduce Montessori education methods to India. He was an inspiring teacher who rejected the orthodox
system of school teaching and started playful for learning. Gijubhai published close to 200 works including
storybooks. His topics include children, education, travel and humor. He given focus on children, parents
and teacher. He was known as ‘ Moochhali Maa’.
About Book-
The book, Divaswapna was published in Guajarati language in 1932 and was translated into
different languages. The book was broadly divided into four main parts such, the experiment begins, the
progress of the experiment, at the end of the term and last gathering.
In Divaswapna, the protagonist who is a writer by profession chooses to become a four-grade
teacher for a year in order to see if the learning objectives can be achieved through innovative strategies.
Strategies that are more student-friendly, student-centric and student participatory. The story basically
narrates the obstacles and challenges such as orthodox teaching method, rote memorization, corporal
punishment, reinforcement, personal cleanliness, physical fitness, lack of resources etc. faced by the
teacher in implementing his ideas and achieving his goals.
In this book writer given new methods of teaching like storytelling, activity based, games & sports,
library, peer learning, field visit etc.
The book propounds the theory that a child needs an environment of freedom and self-reliance. It
criticizes teaching by creating a fear in the minds of children. It also propagates the need for educators to
break away from the shackles of rigidity to give way to new ideas. It reinforces that children should learn
to enhance knowledge not for fear of examination. This learning need to take place naturally and should
not be the end product of cramming.
Divaswapna reconfirms the belief that when a cause is approached with enthusiasm, self-
confidence and dedication experiments are a success. With the changing scenario of education,
Divaswapna gives an insight to all educators and parents about experiences which are crucial to learning.
