As I write thiscolumn, heavy rainsqualls are blowing

overhead and the boats arerocking in the SFYC harbor.Several roller furling jibshave been shredded, but ourtrusty harbor crew under theguidance of HarborCommittee Chairman EdLynch and General ManagerDennis Conneally worked

much of the night to prevent any more serious damage. This unexpected storm blew in just a few weeks after a

heavy truck loaded with pebbles for The Club’s little beachcrashed through the dry dock. The pebbles were donated bya wonderful SFYC member who intended them to be used toreplenish the stones that our always active children throwinto the Bay. Fortunately, repairs were made very quickly. We are grateful to the same generous member who evenfooted the bill for the dock repair.

This brings me to the main topic of this month’scolumn: maintenance. Or better: deferred maintenance. Formany years The Club has been postponing necessary upkeepand deferring maintenance. Some may argue that thiscolumn should wait for another day, but then again…

Let me enumerate just a few of our recent maintenanceproblems. At the end of last year, the Club’s dry dockbuckled under the load of the boats stored there when severalof the old, tired supporting timbers gave way. The northhoist broke down because it had not been maintainedproperly and the motor had to be replaced at great expense. Many of the electric boxes in the harbor were no longerfunctioning properly. While some emergency repairs havebeen undertaken in the kitchen, several required codeupgrades still have to be performed. And just last month thesewer pipe under the Cove House broke and had to bereplaced.

Two years ago, the Club Board identified several majorprojects that needed to be undertaken in order to maintainour beautiful facility in a condition that we can all be proudof. Some projects, such as the necessary code upgrades inthe kitchen, were delayed because they could beaccomplished more efficiently and economically within thecontext of an overall kitchen renovation.

Lengthy discussions with builders and planners ensuedwith respect to all projects. There was also the need to obtainpermits and licenses. The Club was asked to undertake asurvey of our property lines and a parking lot study. Even anarcheological assessment had to be carried out to ensure that

there were no Indian burial grounds on the property before wecould apply for the necessary building permits. In themeantime, regular maintenance was postponed in anticipationof the major refurbishments.

The good news is that we are now poised to undertakeseveral of the priority projects initially identified. The harbordock rebuilding project will begin in the next few weeks andthe restoration of the Dining Deck is teed up for final approval. The kitchen remodel can begin as soon as the necessarypermits are obtained. We will offer project overviews to theentire membership at the upcoming Open House.

That leaves the Cove House rejuvenation as the majoropen issue. For this project we need important input fromSFYC members.

A detailed survey of the Cove House that was undertakenby experts has identified numerous deficiencies of thebuilding’s structure that need to be remedied to maintain theviability of the facility, its structural soundness and itscompliance with the applicable codes.

The Board has identified two basic directions in which wecan proceed. We can make the necessary repairs and codeupgrades to the Cove House; an undertaking that willunfortunately involve considerable expense. Or we can takethe opportunity to make modest architectural changes that willalso greatly enhance the usability of the building for memberevents. This would involve the removal of some of the interiorwalls that currently impinge on the usability of the interiorspace. These walls are left over from the times when thestructure served as a private residence and result in awkwardnooks and crannies and a very inefficient floor plan.

The good news is that if we undertake theseimprovements, the Main Dining room could be almostexclusively reserved for member dining. Birthday parties, weddings and member gatherings would then have anattractive alternative venue in the Cove House.

To make this important decision in the interest of theentire SFYC membership, the Board needs your input and sageadvice. Nothing has been finalized and this project is a work inprogress. The decision to be made will have an impact on themost efficient use of our property, the ambiance of ourfacilities and it will have financial implications.

Your entire Board hopes that you will come to the OpenHouse, which is planned for Saturday, March 5 at 9:00 a.m.You will have an opportunity to tour the Cove House and thekitchen. Following this, members of the Board will have abrief presentation and stand ready to listen to your questions, concerns and recommendations.

We hope to be able to welcome you to this importantdiscussion!

Something must be done!!! YourClub is behaving irresponsibly! While I was wandering the SFYC

docks a couple of months back you canimagine my shock when this dump truckcame flying up from the beach, right ontothe dry dock. When I spoke with thetruck’s driver he claimed he was simplydriving down 101, heading south andminding his own business, when nextthing he knew: Wham!!!! Our yacht clubdropped right on top of him. This photowas taken as he was trying to drive out ofhis predicament. The SFYC HouseCommittee is going to have to addressthis problem. This club should not beallowed to continue taking off whenever itwants, at all hours of the day and night, just to wander all over the county.

Back on January 9th I was touringour club facilities, trying to maintain myfooting between the black ice pockets onthe docks from the morning freeze when Iwas shocked to see the harbor abuzz withactivity. I’m so cold that I wasconsidering putting something over myvery sheer mini dress with matchingblazing red heels (with cutesy socks),when what did I see but some of theserious cruisers like the Fromms and

Speaking of lending a hand….cansomeone offer a metaphoric one to StaffCommodore Lynch? Just speak softlyto him when you see him, tell him what agreat job he did, how good he looks, andcall his wife to come and get him.

Well, that’salmost all from me,Tyra Banks thismonth’s guest writer.

One last thing, spring is almost uponus and there’s stilltime to get into shape

by starting your own tape worm diets.

Victoria Secret fans noticed this pastmonth that a famous hand model visitedthe SFYC. In the photo on the left, takenby our own fashion photographer StaffCommodore John Swain as HaroldKleiderman’s hand exhibits the latest indock boxes and electrical cords. Longaccused of not keeping up withneighboring club’s fashion, our HarborCommittee’s director of ambiance EdLynch, decided that The Club shouldmove into the twenty first century byembracing a new look for 2011. Tornjeans, thread bare sweaters, worn out dockcords and burned out electrical boxes arehaute couture at The SFYC. A specialthree snaps to Swain, Kleiderman andLynch for helping to bring about our newfashionable look. You all lookmarrrrhaavalous….you know you do.

Spring will soon be upon us and letus hope the weather this year is alittle warmer than last. The Harbor

Committee is full steam ahead with phaseone of the harbor rebuild project. Workwill begin at the member and guest dockarea and will work down to the end of the0 dock. Work will include new floats, power posts, decking surface, rubrail andhardware. We expect completion of theguest dock area by Opening Day (May 1)and project completion by the end ofsummer. We will work hard to minimizeany inconvenience to members andguests. Members will be kept up to dateby postings on SFYC’s e-mail newsletter,The Bow Wave.

The harbor has experienced someserious electrical problems in the past fewmonths. We are working with electricalexperts to identify the specific problems

As spring approaches, many berthrenters will be vacating the harbor fordestinations many of us dream of visiting.During their absence, some membersenjoy the harbor as Temporary Renters.Last season, eighteen members filled theharbor on a temporary basis and enjoyedthe benefits of being in the harbor. Thisoption is open to all Regular Members aslong as they are on the Berth Wait List andhave added their name to the TemporaryBerth Wait List as well. If you are not oneither of the lists, and want to be added, please send an email to [email protected] rentals are based uponseniority on the Berth Wait List.

Lastly, if you have a boat in theharbor or on dry dock and you are notreceiving The Bow Wave email updatesand keeping up on information about theharbor via The Bulletin, you are missingimportant information about changes, issues, updates and events occurringaround The SFYC and harbor. and develop solutions that will be takento correct the issues. During thisinvestigation, other potential issueshave been uncovered that require theHarbor Staff to take corrective actionimmediately. All boats using thepower stations are required to use amarine approved power cord with aminimum capacity of the breaker (30or 50 amps). Household cords areallowable for temporary use whenthe boat owner or repair person ispresent. Use of household cords leftunattended can pose a serious firehazard due to overheating if toomuch amperage is being used andthe cord is rated less than the circuitbreaker resulting in the cord meltingbefore the breaker would ever trip. Also noted was several worn plugswhich showed signs of heat, resultingin one of the power stations meltingand starting a small fire that wasextinguished by the rain. The HarborStaff has established an ongoing testingand evaluation program and willcontact any boat owner if a hazard isdetected.

The San Francisco Yacht Club will be well representedat the upcoming Optimist Team Trials hosted by SFYCin early May. These thirteen SFYC members have

qualified for the regatta over the past year. The results ofthese Team Trials will determine who qualifies for TeamUSA for International regattas this summer.

Head Coach Nico Winogradcoached at SFYC for two years andlives in San Francisco. Nico is fromArgentina and has coached Optis for overa decade. He has grown to be one of themost respected Opti coaches in theUnited States. Nico has been one of the

Team USA coaches at various international regattas. He willbe the SFYC Head Coach at the Team Trials.

Alex Moody: age 14 in 2011, livesin Tiburon. Finished 144th in the 2010Team Trials. Alex is a coaches’ favoriteand one of the best thinkers on theteam. He is most at home on SanFrancisco Bay in breeze over fifteenknots. At the Orange Bowl in Miami afew months ago he posted some fantastic top fifteen scoreson the first day in twenty knots.

Christopher Casciani: age 12 in2011, lives in Santa Rosa. Team Trialsrookie. Christopher will be one of theyoungest competitors at the regatta. He hasput in more hours than most on the waterand the hard work has paid off, earning hima qualifying spot at the West CoastChampionship in Los Angeles last fall.

Dylan Meade: age 14 in 2011, lives inSausalito. Team Trials rookie. Dylan liveson a boat and has been around boats hiswhole life. Over the past three years he hashoned his racing skills and earned a spot atTeam Trials with his results at the Nationalsin Virginia last summer. He has perhaps thebest attendance record at SFYC practice andit shows.

Jackson Wagner: age 15 in 2011, livesin Atherton. Team Trials rookie.

Jackson joined The SFYC team about ayear ago from Martha’s Vineyard. He hasbeen a great addition to the team and likes thebreeze on the Bay.

Kristopher Swanson: age 15 in 2011,lives in Kentfield. Finished 13th in the2010 Team Trials. Currently on the USNational Team having qualified for NorthAmericans last year. Kristopher has beenone of The SFYC’s top performers for thepast two years. He sails with the West SideTeam and won the 2009 Team RacingNationals with them. Look for a top-ten finish in 2011.

Lawson Willard: age 15 in 2011, lives inSan Francisco. Finished 71st in the 2010Team Trials. Currently on the US NationalTeam having qualified for British Nationalslast year. Lawson is one of the seniors on theteam and has gotten quite tall for the boat.Look for him to dominate if it gets windy in2011.

Logan Lee: age 15 in 2011, lives inPortola Valley. Finished 155th in the 2010Team Trials. Logan joined The SFYCteam from Portola Valley Yacht Club whenhe had a solid grounding and was already agood racer. He has had some great resultslocally over the past year and should feel right at home on theSouthampton/The Berkeley Circle.

Lucy Wilmot: age 13 in 2011, lives inOrinda. Team Trials rookie. Lucy hasimproved very quickly over the last year and hasworked hard to do so. She always has fun andsails hard. Locally, she has done well and hasbeen to a few big fleet events so look for her tohave her best big fleet result yet.

Maria Casciani: age 14 in 2011, lives in Santa Rosa.Team Trials rookie

Maria has put in lots of time on thewater like her brother. She has reallygrasped an understanding of the big pictureand the rules recently. Maria battles hardwith the other SFYC sailors at the top ofthe local regattas and has won a few.

Romain Screve: age 13 in 2011, lives in Ross. Finished12th in the 2010 Team Trials.

Currently on the US National Teamhaving qualified for South Americans andNorth Americans last year. Romain isconsistently one of the top players in theOpti fleet. He won the Midwinters in NewOrleans, competing with over 230 boats andplaced 6th at Orange Bowl. Look for

Romain to finish consistently in the top ten in under fifteenknots and only slightly lower in “big breeze.” He is also amember of the West Side Team.

Will Cefali: age 15 in 2011, lives inPleasant Hill. Finished 45th in the 2010 TeamTrials. Currently on the US National Team. Will has been at the top of The SFYC team foryears and has won just about every localregatta and trophy that exists. He did notplace as high as he hoped last year, so look forhim to have a really strong performance on hishome court.

Will Dana: age 15 in 2011, lives in SanFrancisco. Team Trials rookie. Will joinedThe SFYC team from The St Francis YachtClub at the end of last year. He has beenmoving up through the ranks and looks tohave a good first Team Trials on The Bay.

William McMullen: age 15 in 2011, lives in Tiburon.Finished 172nd in the 2010 Team Trials.Currently on the US National Team. Qualifiedfor the Braassemermeer Regatta in Hollandlast year. Since last year’s Team Trials, Willhas practiced hard and improved immensely. He is now at the top tier of The SFYC teamand will do very well if the breeze comes on.

A Point In TimeA Point In TimeKen Frost, SFYC Historian

Van and Stevie Taylor have given The Club a beautifulsterling silver wine coaster that was originally presented toCommodore William H.G. Morrow, owner and skipper of

the sloop Challenger, for winning the Monday July 5th, 1909 racefrom Vallejo to The San Francisco Yacht Club in Sausalito. It is anice addition to our trophy display.

Here is a little history of the winning yacht and the race. Therace was the last leg of the Fourth of July Weekend Cruise. Theevent started with a Saturday July 3rd cruise from Sausalito to theGum Trees on Suisun Creek and was followed by a cruise back toVallejo on July 4th. Interestingly, Corinthian Yacht Club had acruise that same weekend. It went to Army Point in San Pablo Bayon July 3rd, followed by a cruise to Vallejo, and finished with a racehome to Corinthian on July 5th. Vallejo’s harbor must have beencrowded that weekend.

Challenger was commissioned for a syndicate ofSFYC members headed by Commodore Bill Morrow. She was designed by B.B. Crowinshield, at the timeone of the foremost yacht designers in the country, andbuilt by John Twigg and Son of San Francisco in 1901and early 1902. The forty-two foot, ten inch sloop washauled by wagon to the Folsom Street Pier where shewas launched and towed to Sausalito to be christened.

That year Bill skippered her to victory in the SanFrancisco Perpetual Challenge Trophy Race of 1902,beating Harpoon skippered by Fred Cook of theCorinthian Yacht Club. Bill and his partners must havebeen very proud since that was their objective whenthey started the project a year earlier.

In 1904, Challenger was defeated by the radicalCorinthian, a fifty-six foot, six-inch scow-like sloopdesigned by Edward Burgess of Boston with a designthat was decades ahead of the times, in a very tightrace. In 1905, Challenger was soundly beaten byCorinthian, ending her career as a participant in theChallenge Cup.

Still, in the 1909 edition of “The San FranciscoYacht Club’s Annual”, an article entitled “Modern SailBoats”, it was reported that “The Challenger, built byJohn Twigg of San Francisco, is certainly a credit to thebuilder.” Clearly she was still a threat on the racecourse.

A big “Thank You” goes to the Taylors for givingThe SFYC the beautiful trophy. And a “Thank You”also should be given to the Taylors’ friend who foundthis trophy among her father’s old memorabilia. Itreminds us of The Club’s rich history.

Bravery AwardFrom

Alaska Coast Guard

With 35-knot winds and wavescresting up to 12 feet, theofficers and crew of the

Alaska Marine Highway System(AMHS) ferry Taku saved the lives oftwo men who had been forced toabandon ship after a fire in the engineroom of their fishing vessel.

MM&P members aboard Taku atthe time were Captain Thomas Moore,Chief Mate Colin Vogler, SecondMate Kristina Mogel and Third MatesBrett Merrill and David Mesdag. Takuwas headed southbound on ChathamStraits, en route to Hoonah fromJuneau, when mate on watch Mogelheard the Mayday call to the CoastGuard. She alerted Captain Moore andChief Mate Vogler while Third MateMerrill took over radio communicationswith the Coast Guard.

There were no more transmissionsfrom the burning fishing boat: its radiohad gone dead. “We altered course 15degrees to the port side,” said CaptainMoore, who in the meantime had takencontrol of the ship. “As we approached,we could see the burning boat with ourbinoculars…The closer we got, the

bigger the flames became.”Captain Moore maneuvered Taku to

create a lee while Chief Mate Voglermustered a rescue group and handed outfire axes. “It was a blazing inferno,” hesaid. “We had to get close because the liferaft was tethered to the burning boat. Takuwas rolling because we were gettingbroadsided too.” “At one point, the liferaft disappeared under our sponson, whichsticks out about three or four feet,” saidMogel. Captain Moore used the bowthrusters to push the raft out from underTaku’s curved hull. “We didn’t know if thefishing boat was going to blow up or not,”Vogler said. “There were probably acouple hundred gallons of diesel fuel stillon board…

We were about to disconnect thelifeboat, but I said ‘wait, we may not haveto launch the boat.” Crew members ofTaku who had climbed into the lifeboatwere able to pull the two fishermen out ofthe life raft and into the lifeboat, whichwas hoisted back on deck. “It was goodthe lifeboat never detached from theship,” Mogel said. “It’s a dangerousoperation in heavy seas to recover a lifeboat,” said Captain Moore. “We takeprecautions with helmets and all thenecessary safety gear, but people can stillget hurt.”

The two fishermen were treated formild hypothermia. The officers and crewof Taku have been recognized with anaward for bravery by the Coast Guard.“The rescue operation would not havegone so smoothly if the crew had notperformed as well as they did,” saidCaptain Moore. A passenger aboard Takuwho witnessed the rescue said he wasimpressed by how smoothly it went, especially considering the weather. “Thewind was blowing hard, it nearly blew myglasses off,” he said. “These guys trainand train and train in calm weather, butthe real push was last night. The real test, they pulled through miraculously...Someone’s really on the ball.” “It’ssomething any prudent mariner woulddo,” Chief Mate Vogler said. “You getpeople on board and keep ‘em alive.”

Voyagers Dinner“Cruise to SFYC”

On January 28th approximately 58cruisers celebrated their cruising

adventures at our annual VoyagersDinner led by S/C John Swain and PatMontag. We shared a great dinner inthe Cove House and heard aboutmembers’ cruising adventures. We haveso many SFYC boats in or aroundBritish Columbia we are thinking ofestablishing a SFYC outpost in Sydney,B.C! In the last twelve months or so,Niel and Nancy Davidson, AlHaussener, Wyman and Gay Harris,John and Betsy Scarborough, BobVanBlaricom, and several others haveall cruised the fabulous waters of thePacific Northwest. Wyman and GayHarris, who were named the CCACruisers of the Year, also explained thevery interesting history of the CCAtrophy. We also heard from BobVanBlaricom, Marina Eisenzimmer,Steve Mason, Mimi Cornelius, andothers. A great event…can’t wait untilnext year. Thanks again to John Swainand Pat.

Giants Home Opening

Night GameSaturday, April 9

Hooray!! Yes. We did it! Score onehundred for the good guys. We

have 100 tickets for the Opening NightSF Giants game against the St. LouisCardinals at 6:05 pm. The Giants frontoffice went overboard in making thiswork. Our tickets are all together inSection 325 View Reserve. THEYWILL COST ONLY $50 PER SEAT.In case you have not heard, there was apublic lottery to purchase two tickets tothis game. This game is always fun,

with fireworks following immediately.Blacktoppers are definitely welcome.

We will undoubtedly have a dockparty before the game as well. Thesethings just seem to happen.

For those of you who have signedup for tickets, you will be billed on theMarch statement from the Club. Wehave approximately eighty memberssigned up already and over twenty boatswill try to make it into South BeachMarina. If you have not signed up,now would be a good time to call theFront Desk and do so.

GO GIANTS!

“Follow the Flag”

When we cruise into a distantharbor, wouldn’t it be great to

see a welcoming flag…to know thatfellow SFYC cruisers are also there andwelcome your visit. For example, atSouth Beach or Benicia we arefrequently spread out among hundredsof boats and it is difficult to find ourfriends from SFYC who are on our

particular cruise. This flag will bevisible from the distance and helpcruisers locate friends.

Borrowing the idea from ourfriends at the Beverly Yacht Club inMarion, MA, we now have “The SanFrancisco Yacht Club” Cruise Flag. This flag is normally flown in port, butalso when on the hook. It stands outand tells everyone that the SFYCCruising Fleet has arrived and is readyto party. Flags are available at the FrontDesk for purchase. Don’t leave thecove without it.

Conclusion

We look forward to a great cruisingyear in 2011. We welcome any

and all Club members who would liketo join us on our cruises.

“Because too much funis never enough.”

facts about any changes happening aroundThe Club. Our first Manager’s Chatwill be on Saturday, March 5thimmediately following the Members’Open House. Various members of theHouse Committee will join me for theseopen and informative Manager Chats aswell. These discussions are designed toprovide members with first handinformation about current issues insteadof hearing things second or third handfrom a friend of a friend. If not correctedearly, misinformation gets a life of itsown that can often times lead tomisunderstandings and false rumors thatare never productive. Please join meSaturday afternoons for some hot coffeeand open, honest roundtable discussions.

A reminder: There will be aMembers’ Open House on March 5that 9:00 AM to discuss the proposals andoptions of the master plan for the futureof The Club. I highly encourage you toattend this meeting and fully express yourviews openly to the Board. It isimportant that your voice is heard so thatthe final plan is truly the plan that bestrepresents all The Club’s needs.

This month our Club activities kickinto high gear with the start of our busyracing season. There will be a generalRace Meeting on Saturday, March 12th inthe Sailing Center. The first Club SeriesRegatta, the Rosenblum Regatta andKnox Club Series takes place on March19th. On March 26th and 27th SFYC willbe defending The SF Cup on the BerkeleyCircle in what is anticipated to be a verycompetitive race between our club and St.Francis YC. You won’t want to missthese regatta weekends as The SFYC willbe busy and full with the excitement ofracing.

Finally, I have recently been asked bya variety of members about the variousemployee activities that we offer our staffso I thought I would highlight a few inthis column. Many members are unawareof the great camaraderie we have built upamongst our outstanding staff and theefforts we go through to keep them at TheClub. Here are a few of those activities:

Education and Training

• We conduct Staff Education Programsfor all employees on team building, service training, wine and foodeducation and best managementpractices.

• Weekly and monthly manager meetingsand departmental meetings to developand foster open and frequentcommunication amongst the staff.

• Staff Field Trips and Outings topromote fun, camaraderie andeducation, i.e., food distributioncenters, meat packing facilities, industrial laundry facilities, winerytours, hotel kitchen and banquetfacilities and more.

• Annual Manager all-day TeamBuilding Retreats including winerytours and sailing on the bay.

I look forward to chatting with youaround The Club!

Last monththere wasa special

meeting of themembershipwhere Clubpolicies andprocedures werediscussed in anopen and

unfettered forum. A very informativepresentation was made by the Board ofDirectors that helped clarify many openissues; issues that have been on the mindsof concerned members for some time. The attendance was overwhelming;clearly demonstrating that there is a needfor more open dialogue from the Boardand from Club Management.

Any change to existing Club policiespertaining to Club governance beginswith open discussions at the SFYCcommittee level until a consensus isreached. If there are recommendationsfor change, they are brought to the ClubBoard for approval. No matter how largeor small the change might be, it is vettedmany times over through the committeeprocess and by the Board before ClubManagement is tasked with implementingthose changes. Your SFYC staff isalways committed to open and transparentcommunication, providing the best qualityservice to our members and striving forthe highest level of member satisfactionpossible.

In an effort to increase thatcommunication, the House Committeehas agreed to begin a series of Bulletinarticles highlighting our policies andpractices and to provide explanations forthe reasoning behind them. It isimportant to have regular open dialogue, answering as many questions as possibleso that the membership is fully informedon Club decisions that are “House”related and affect The Club’s dailyoperations.
