Welcome

March has been a busy month with

different football tournaments and we also

have a new baby in Istanbulls family;

Istanbulls Türkiye Basketball Team!

In following pages, you will be able to find

the story behind Istanbulls Basketball

Team and an interview with the coach Cem

Kapancıoğlu. Although it is a fresh team,

you can understand the passion between

the players following coach’s spirit!

Football teams have been attended

different tournaments from youth to adult

level. Istanbulls Under 9 has played in the

semi-final, which was the main highlight for

us. In addition adult teams Turkish

Airlines and Pınar Istanbulls have

attended in 7 aside tournament; where

Turkish Airlines qualified until quarter final.

You can read coach’s comments regarding

the tournaments.

Moreover, there is a great article written by

Adam Sibley focusing on parents and

coaches’ attitude against youth

competitions. We believe there is a lot to

learn for the parents as well.

Please do not hesitate to share your

thoughts and highly valuable feedback.

Keep supporting Istanbulls!

Istanbulls Basketball Team

Can you please give us some

information about establishment

process of Istanbulls Basketball

Team?

First of all I would like to thank all the

Istanbulls SC management for their

support in initiating and establishing

the basketball team; they open their

heart and all the available resources.

Their efforts are highly appreciated.

I have always dreamed of to be a part of sports team as I stepped in Dubai when

Erol Muzaffer asked if I would like to be responsible for the basketball team in the

club I was delighted and immediately accepted the offer. We have used all the

available resources to call for amateur expat basketball player in our community.

Within one week we had around 25 serious team players who are willingly following

all the trainings and games for the last 5 weeks. We hope this shall expand within

the near future.

By the way let me not forget Utku Balık’s support as the team assistant coach all

the way.

The team has been established just before the league has begun; how is the

response and harmony in the team? What do you think about the current

situation of the team?

We are a really new team, most of the players have just met couple of weeks back;

however at the moment the harmony of the team is pretty good and every body in

the team respect each other.

Moreover we have fun and we all enjoy basketball.

League has begun and Istanbulls Türkiye has played first game. We had the

opportunity to see the opponent teams as well. How do you see today and

the future of Istanbulls within the competition?

Well... We will see this for ourselves in just 7 weeks :)

Given the statics; our players age and previous experiences we may be perceived

as an average team… However we are hardworking and disciplined and we will not

surrender until the last whistle!

Istanbulls Basketball Team

How did you feel in your first Coaching experience with Istanbulls?

I’ve felt great and still I am feeling great; but let me tell you it is not easy task!

As this is an amateur organisation you need to handle the players feelings more

carefully.

Moreover sometimes we have 2 trainings in a week and a game on Fridays with

our busy personal lives; this is something really difficult to handle

I especially thank to our lovely wives for their support.

But let me tell you when I am in the court or at home thinking about coaching a

basketball team I feel good and I forget everything!

I do my best to give the best decisions and try to keep as simple as possible.

It is an endless learning experience…

In the first game there was a good number of supporters; do you think

Istanbulls will be able to keep and increase its fan base?

The fans are great because they are not assessing if we are losing or wining they

are there any way… :Just for the fun of it.

Moreover the venue is a great place to come for Fridays it is a cosy big basketball

hall with free coffee and food is available; you just pay little to see four consecutive

games, which I believe really fun to watch.

Accordingly, I believe the people will be more interested as they started to hear

more about the team. That’s why we request from all the people we know to spread

the word about the events.

We believe playing basketball is more fun in front of a big crowd.

May the force be with you!

U9 Cup Tournement

Comments from coach Özhan Özden

During the IFA Cup Tournament that U9 team has played on the 11th of March,

players had a very good tournament as it was team’s first tournament. I believe our

team played very well and succeed.

We have started a little bit slow and 1-0

lost against Dutco Dragons; but in our

second game we have played great football

against Lightning Bolts and won 2-1.

Istanbulls U9 has finished the group

games in style against Match Attax, with

a dominant 5-0 win and qualified for the

quarter final. At this stage, we played

against Lightning Bolts, our players

managed to win this game with a comeback from behind with a final score of 3-2.

In the semi-final, we have played against Falcons and unfortunately lost 3-0. That

was very exciting game for both teams, everyone played very good; but it was

difficult to keep up with them after all these matches.

Congratulations to Istanbulls U9 team for showing great team spirit, good football

talent and most importantly their passion! It was great fun on and off the pitch,

Yalçın showed his natural talent about “wrestling” and it was very enjoyable family

day out.

Great achievement, well done U9’s!

Football 7s Tournement

Comments from coach Özkan Düzcan

It was amazing feeling to see two great teams playing incredibly well against very

good and well organised expat teams... Pınar Istanbulls kicked off early in the

morning, has played very well until last minute but conceded an unlucky goal and

lost 2-1.

In following games Pınar has draw once and

lost twice however had the chance to chase the

trophy cup. On the second day, unfortunately due

to busy schedule of our players the team was only

five with Jamal, Burhan, Uğur, Türker and Nejat.

Since other teams have faced the same problem

Pınar had a friendly game with Orbit Showtime.

The last game was a 3-3 draw, but Pınar

Istanbulls was out with penalties.

Turkish Airlines Istanbulls side played their first game against very competitive

teams. They did great and put full effort to get the game but unfortunately they lost

4-2 their first game against Vets! After the break they had two more games which

they have dominated and got six points which make the team qualify from the

group.

The next day Turkish Airlines has played against first division leader Noodle

House Irish in the quarter final; it was very competitive and tough game, all players

have player with 100% as usual! The team has conceded the first goal while

dominating the game! Two minutes after the goal, Sami Yıldırım was fouled in the

danger zone and has earned penalty for his team. Özkan Düzcan has equalled the

score. Until the last minute, the team has played well and wasted many chances! In

the last minute, Noodle House Irish has earned a penalty and made it 2-1 just.

It was a wonderful, competitive and well organised tournament.

We hope to get better results in following tournements and looking forward to win

the tournament!

Winning at all Costs

ISTANBULLS MAGAZINE

If you watch football on TV you will have heard the phrase “It’s a results business!”

probably more times than you have had hot dinners. The problem with them saying

this all the time about football on TV is it breeds that atmosphere and approach to

youth football. Yes, in the Premiership there is a lot of money riding on where a

team finishes in the league and the cups so it is a results business. Youth football

shouldn’t be like that and this is where I think this country is going wrong. If we as a

country want to develop better players we have to give them the chance to learn,

develop and play good football. Not just play football which wins football matches,

forgetting about playing with style, forgetting about playing just basic good football.

Nobody learns from playing football which is focused on lumping the ball up the

field at every chance you get.

For some children, parents, and

coaches winning in youth football

can become everything. The

whole week before the game they

will be thinking of what they need

to do to win and then their whole

weekend is centred around the

match with their mood for the

week after being decided by

whether they win or lose. The

pressure some coaches and parents put teams under to win games is phenomenal;

instead of going to enjoy a football game they are going to a game to win with their

long term goal to win the league or cup they are in. In the build up to the game

there will be no talk of enjoying yourself and doing your best, it will all be about

winning and nothing else.

If you are involved in a club like this and your team loses a game then post match

talks from the coach can be brutal. Not only are the players down because they

lost, they feel they have let the parents and the coach down. This is all

compounded when a coach will go off on one ripping into everything the team did

wrong instead of praising what they did right. This talk will normally end with the

coach saying that if they want to win the league they better play a lot better than

they did today.

Page 9: March 2011 - Istanbulls Magazine

Winning at all Costs

Some parents and coaches will offer incentives to their players to win with that

being anything from a McDonalds to a five pound note. In professional football I

agree with bonus incentives for performance but when kids need to be bribed in

order to play their best or to have their good play rewarded by cash or a free meal

it shows the game is in a sad state of affairs. Kids should just be able to go out, try

their best, and enjoy playing football without all these rewards. If they can’t just

enjoy playing football without having to be rewarded then they are in the wrong

sport. As a coach I always hated coaching against teams that offered rewards,

because if your players got wind of it they would be asking you if they could have

the same things that the opposition get. Yes by all means treat your team from time

to time but don’t make it the norm as if you are doing it every week it isn’t special

any more and the players will remember those treats even more if they don’t get

them every week.

March 2011 Game Results

March was very unlucky for Turkish Airlines Istanbulls. The team has played against main

competitors: MBC, Precor and Panthers; and unfortunately was able to get only 1 point

from three matches.

After latest results, Turkish Airlines lost hopes to be champions, but still chasing for

second place on the table. We all hope that luck will be with us during April!

The team is going to play 3 more games in April and 2010-2011 will be over. April is your

last chance to watch and support Turkish Airlines Istanbulls, hope you don’t miss it...

March 2011 Game Results

March has been very successful for Pınar Istanbulls. The team has won 4 games out of

5.

One game left in 2010-11 season and Pınar Istanbulls needs only 1 point to qualify for

the 3rd division. We all believe it will happen with a top level concentration and high

ambition.

Hope to see you in Pınar’s last game to celebrate together when the team gets

promoted!
