It's that time of year again.

March Madness is rapidly approaching and before you think about filling out those brackets for your office pool, take some advice from us at SJ. Whether you're the die-hard hoops fan,

the casual fan knowing the top teams, or the clueless fan who hasn't watched a basketball game in your life (and the ones

who always seem to win), here are some teams to pick or shy away from.

CONTENDERS:

Ohio State Projected Seed: 1

Record: 28-2 (15-2) Star Power: F/C Jared Sullinger

Strengths: The Buckeyes have had a great season so far led by freshman sensation Jared Sullinger. Sullinger is averaging 17.1 points to go along with 9.8 rebounds per contest and Ohio State seems like

the top team in the country. Guard William Bufford has been a reliable second option with 14.3 points per game while shooting 43% from

behind the arc. Ohio State has a very reliant scorer in Sullinger, although three other players are averaging double-digits in scoring.

Ohio State has the third highest field goal percentage in the nation and although they may seem like a one-man team at first glance, the Buckeyes are very well-rounded and a championship favorite.

Weaknesses: Ohio State's defense has been suspect at times. Opponents are shooting 43% from the field against the Buckeyes

and this weakness was exploited in their two losses. Wisconsin and Purdue both shot 51% from the field to beat the Buckeyes, and if

Ohio State has to face a sharp shooting team they can be in trouble.

6

Kansas Projected Seed: 1

Record: 28-2 (13-2) Star Power: F Marcus Morris

Strengths: The literal "Twin Towers", Marcus and

Markieff Morris, have been devastating to opposing teams this year. Marcus Morris leads the team in

scoring (17.1) and second in rebounding (6.9) while twin Markieff leads the team in rebounding (8.3) and

is second in scoring (13.6). But the Jayhawks are much more than a two man show. In the backcourt, Kansas has lots of talent with Josh Selby,

Tyrel Reed, Brady Morningstar, and Tyshawn Taylor. Taylor, the team's starting point guard and assist leader, was recently suspended due to breaking a team policy but will be back for the

Tournament. Look for his leadership and ability to run the offense later this month.

Weaknesses: Kansas does not have nearly as much depth up front as they do in the backcourt. The only other forward getting decent minutes is Thomas Robinson. Robinson plays well in his

limited time, but a three man rotation up front is very exploitable, especially if an opposing team can get the Morris twins in foul trouble early. If something happens in the front court, Kansas

may have a reason for concern.

Notre Dame Projected Seed: 2

Record: 24-5 (13-4) Star Power: G Ben Hansbrough

Strengths: Big East Player of the Year candidate Ben Hansbrough has been nearly unstoppable this season. His 18.4 points per game marks fourth in the Big East while also shooting 44% from three. Forwards Tim Abromaitis and Charleton Scott have been great dual-threats as

scorers and rebounders. Abromaitis stretches the floor with his ability to shoot the three and his 6.2 rebounds and 15.4 points per

game both mark second on the team. Scott leads the team in rebounding by grabbing 7.3 a game and his 11.3 points are third on

the team. Notre Dame is one of the best three point shooting teams in the nation and shoot very well from the free throw line.

Weaknesses: Notre Dame may shoot the three very well but they aren't great at defending it. Opponents shoot almost 40% from behind the arc and a good three point shooting team could exploit the Irish defense. And when Notre Dame is off, they're really off. Not a single loss

has been within single digits and the Irish's losses average a 16-point defeat. If they struggle to keep games close when they're off, it could lead to an early exit.

7

Wisconsin Projected Seed: 3

Record: 23-6 (13-4) Star Power: F Jon Leuer

Strengths: The tandem of forward Jon Leuer and guard

Jordan Taylor has proved to be deadly so far. The two are averaging over 37 points per game and both shoot over 39% from behind the arc. Leuer also leads the team in boards with 7.4 per game while Taylor leads the team with 4.9 assists per game. March also requires some strong free throw shooting, which Wisconsin certainly has. Six Badgers shoot over 84%

from the charity stripe which should prevent leads from slipping away in the closing minutes.

Weaknesses: Besides Leuer and Taylor, there are few scorers. Only two other players on

Wisconsin average over five points per contest and if Leuer and Taylor cannot get their shots to drop, Wisconsin could find themselves in huge trouble.

North Carolina Projected Seed: 3

Record: 23-6 (13-2) Star Power: F Harrison Barnes

Strengths: It seems like the transfer of Larry Drew II has helped the Tar Heels more than anything. They have won

seven of their last eight without Drew, including six in a row. The point guard situation has finally been resolved and

freshman Kendall Marshall has been sensational at setting his teammates up with open looks. The front court combination of

seven-footer Tyler Zeller (14.6), John Henson (11.3), and freshman prodigy Harrison Barnes (13.9) are averaging just

under 40 points and 23 boards per game. They have been nearly unstoppable lately and teams who come into the

tournament hot can usually go far.

Weaknesses: North Carolina has been great scoring up front, but have been sub-par shooting the three and their free throws. The team lacks a pure shooter and only three players shoot their free-throws in the 70 percent range, with their top shooter from the line being Zeller with a 76%

average. This can be scary as we saw with Memphis a couple years ago and the lack of shooters can cause many double teams down low.

8

St. John's Projected Seed: 3

Record: 19-10 (11-6) Star Power: G Dwight Hardy

Strengths: Only a few weeks ago, St. John’s was considered a bubble team, but now they have proved themselves as true

contenders. Senior Dwight Hardy has become a scoring machine with an average of 18.1 points per game and the

senior-filled squad has shown lots of poise. Wins in the past two months over top teams such as Villanova, Pittsburgh,

Marquette, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Duke, and Notre Dame have left people with their jaws dropped and wins like these

have you well prepared for the dance.

Weaknesses: St. Johns is a pretty small team and are not great on the boards. Not a single player averages six rebounds per game, although three different players average over five.

The Red Storm are also a streaky team with losses to teams like Seton Hall, Fordham, and St. Bonaventure. Can they pull of six straight wins?

PRETENDERS:

Pittsburgh Projected Seed: 1

Record: 26-4 (14-3) Star Power: G Ashton Gibbs

Why They're a 1 Seed: Pittsburgh sits in first place of the

powerful Big East and their only losses come from Tennessee, Notre Dame, St. John's, and Louisville. All of these games came within four points with the exception of the Tennessee game. The combo of wingmen Ashton

Gibbs (16.3) and Brad Wanamaker (12.2) are combining for over 28 points per game and are two deadly scoring

options.

Why They're Pretenders: Pittsburgh has two good scorers on the wing, but lack a quality scorer in the post.

They don't have a point guard who commands the offense and the duo of Gibbs and Wanamaker does not gel. In fact, it seems as if Pittsburgh played better with Gibbs injured and on the bench.

I don't see Pittsburgh going farther than the Elite 8, depending on the match-ups of course.

Page 9: SJ Magazine - March 2011

9

BYU

Projected Seed: 2 Record: 27-3 (13-2)

Star Power: G Jimmer Fredette

Why They're a 2 Seed: BYU has beaten a top-ten team in San Diego State twice this year and have the 3rd highest RPI in the

nation. Player of the Year favorite Jimmer Fredette leads the nation in scoring with 27.5 points per game and is a threat to

score from basically anywhere once he crosses half-court.

Why They're Pretenders: The Cougars went from contenders to pretenders with one loss. Although Jimmer Fredette is the leading guy at BYU, their top rebounder, Brandon Davies, was

expelled due to a violation of the honor code. Davies was one of Fredette's favorite targets besides the basket and without

Davies, BYU was destroyed 82-64 by New Mexico at home. Also, one-man teams have proven to be hit or miss, and with the first game without Davies, BYU seemed to be on the miss side of it.

San Diego State Projected Seed: 3

Record: 28-2 (13-2) Star Watch: F Kawhi Leonard

Why They're a 3 Seed: San Diego State has been undefeated with

the exception of two losses to BYU. Double-double machine Kawhi Leonard is averaging 15.2 points and 10.8 boards per game

while the team ranks fourth in RPI.

Why They're Pretenders: Now I may sound like a Mountain West hater but hear me out. Although ranking 4th in RPI, I don't think San Diego State has proven to even be a Sweet-Sixteen favorite.

They've had wins over bubble teams Gonzaga, St. Mary's, Wichita State, and Colorado State and even two wins over a 7-9 seeded UNLV, but wins like those won't get you far in March. Four of those six wins

were within six points, and victories like those do not impress me.

SLEEPERS

There are almost always those Butler's, Davidson's, or George Mason's in March, and while not all of these are double-digit seeds, they are definitely being overlooked. And note that these are

my projected seeds IF and only IF they make it.

Tennessee Projected Seed: 10

Record: 18-12 (8-7) Star Watch: G Scotty Hopson

Tennessee can be hit and miss with wins over

Villanova, Pittsburgh, and Vanderbilt but losses to teams such as Charlotte, Oakland, Charleston. Scotty

Hopson is a prolific scorer and Brian Williams' big defensive presence and rebounding could take

Tennessee farther than expected.

Baylor Projected Seed: 12

Record: 18-11 (7-8) Star Watch: G LaceDarius Dunn

With a guard like LaceDarius Dunn, a forward like Quincy Acy, and a center like Perry Jones, Baylor

could really do some spoiling. Baylor may be one of the "eye-test" teams with their best win over Texas

A&M (at home and away) but with a good showing in the Big 12 tournament, Baylor could nudge their way into the last few spots. Dunn has proven to be one of the top scorers in the nation by averaging just under 20 points per game while Acy and Jones average 14.1

and 12.3 respectively. Acy and Jones both average seven or more rebounds as well, and the big three

could really do some damage if they make the tourney.

A LOOK INTO THE MADNESS: SJ’S MARCH MADNESS PREVIEW (cont.)

Page 11: SJ Magazine - March 2011

11

Cleveland State

Projected Seed: 13 Record: 25-7 (13-5)

Star Watch: G Norris Cole

The only way Cleveland State will make it to the field of 68 is with a conference tournament win; however, it's not all that unlikely. Like I

previously said, one man teams are hit and miss, and Cleveland State's Norris Cole could lead them to some upsets. The 6'1" Cole is not only

averaging 21.8 points, but also 6 boards and 5.8 assists per game. They don't have any quality wins, but they can be a sleeper if paired with the

right team.

Recently, St. Louis Cardinal Minor League Outfielder, C.J. Beatty, agreed to

an interview with me for Sports Jabber Magazine. C.J. is a prospect who was the Top Athlete at North Carolina A&T College for two years prior to

being drafted. I gathered questions from the Sports Jabber community and made my list. I found C.J. to be a down-to-Earth guy who just loves to play

baseball and who has high aspirations playing for the Cardinals in St. Louis.

I am sure you will enjoy his responses to our questions.

1) The first question and comments are from Sports Jabber’s Co-Owner Reg.

“First of all, I want to thank CJ, on behalf of SJ, for doing this interview. Secondly, since you play in the organization of my favorite MLB team AND you & I

attended the same GREAT school, you are now one of my favorite players. ;-) What are some of your goals...in baseball and in life?

GO AGGIES!”

MY ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO ONE DAY BE A MAJOR LEAGUER! and SECOND....BE ABLE TO HELP AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE ACHIEVE THIER DREAMS!

2) As Reg mentioned, you attended college at North Carolina A&T, near your hometown. Please tell our readers more about North Carolina A&T: size of enrollment; what is the school known

for; and why you selected North Carolina A&T?

I THINK THERE ARE ABOUT 12,000 STUDENTS AT A&T. THE AGGIES ARE KNOWN FOR THE BEST HOMECOMING ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH...ALSO I THINK OUR HOMECOMING WAS

RANKED IN THE TOP 5 IN THE NATION AT SOME POINT.

I COULD HAVE WENT TO ANY SCHOOL OF MY CHOICE....UVA, OHIO STATE, NC STATE, LSU, JUST TO NAME SOME… I CHOSE AGGIE LAND BECAUSE THEY ARE D-1, 30min AWAY FROM HOME,

AND THEY GAVE ME A FULL SCHOLARSHIP.

3) You were twice named Athlete of the Year at North Carolina A & T. You were the big man on campus. Now you are in the minors. How does it compare going from being the best athlete on

campus to playing in the minors?

FUNNY YOU ASK! I WAS USED TO BEING TREATED AS A KING, NOW I’M AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL AGAIN TRYING TO CRAWL BACK ON TOP! BUT IT’S FUN.

ONE ON ONE WITH CARDINALS MINOR LEAGUER, C.J. BEATTY WRITTEN BY: LARRYBUD

Page 13: SJ Magazine - March 2011

13

4) You were drafted in the 26th round in the 2009 Draft after your Junior year. At that point, did you consider staying in school for another year in hopes your draft stock might rise? If so, what convinced you to go to the

minors?

WELL....IN BASEBALL, IT’S DIFFERENT. WHEN YOU ARE A JUNIOR, YOU HAVE SOME PULL. BUT WHEN YOU GO PRO AFTER YOUR SENIOR SEASON, REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU ARE, YOUR STOCK IS NOT AS VALUABLE. ONLY

BECAUSE SCOUTS KNOW YOU "HAVE" TO SIGN. PLUS THE CARDINALS PAID FOR THE REST OF MY EDUCATION!

5) You had a wrist injury your rookie season that cut your season very short. Last season, your

batting average was significantly down from your college stats with North Carolina A&T. Were you still recovering from the wrist injury or was it from a learning curve of professional

baseball?

NO....MY WRIST WAS TOTALLY HEALED. IT’S THAT LEARNING CURVE THAT EVERYONE GOES THROUGH. EVERY YEAR I LEARN MORE AND TRAIN HARDER....SO WE SHALL SEE :-)

6) The Cardinals are a storied franchise. They have the second most World Series rings. The have

a long list of great players from Stan the Man to Ozzie Smith to Mark McGuire to Albert Pujols. Is it intimidating or inspiring to be with an organization like the Cardinals with such history and

iconic greats? Who is your favorite Cardinal of all time?

NOOOOOOOO NOOOO! MAN I FEEL LIKE A KID IN A CANDY STORE BEING IN THE CARDINALS ORGANIZATION! IT’S A JAW-DROPPING EXPERIENCE. I REALLY DO LOOK UP TO ALBERT

BECAUSE OF HIS STRONG WORK ETHIC!

7) This is your second Spring Training with the Cards. How are you approaching it this season?

THIS SEASON, I PICKED A DIFFERENT THEME! LAST SEASON, IT WAS "SHOW ‘EM WHATCHA GOT." THIS SEASON IT’S "COME EARLY...LEAVE LATE, STAY HUNGRY AND HUMBLE."

8) C.J, I live in Springfield, MO. It appears likely that you will be sent to AA Springfield Cardinals this season at some

point. Any thoughts on how life may change being so far from home in a small city in Missouri?

UMMMMM.....NOT TOO MUCH THOUGHT! I’M SO FOCUSED

ON CLIMBING THE CHARTS THAT IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW FAR OR HOW COLD OR HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE AT THE GAMES! I WANNA PLAY FOR TONY

ONE DAY AND IMMA TRY MY VERY BEST TO GET THERE.

9) You have been involved with the group L.E.A.D. Tell our readers a little bit about L.E.A.D.

WELL, IT STANDS FOR LAUNCH, EXPOSE, ADVISE,

DIRECT. IT’S A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION GEARED TOWARDS HELPING INNER-CITY KIDS OF ATLANTA, GA PLAY BASEBALL AT A HIGHER LEVEL. JASON HEYWARD IS A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE AND

HE AND I WORK REAL CLOSE WITH THIS GROUP.

Here are some other questions from our readers.

10) CJ, who inspired you to be so involved with the kids at school and the youth groups

that you speak to?

WELL TO BE HONEST....I KINDA INSPIRED MYSELF. I USED TO ASK MY PARENTS GROWING UP, WHY, WHY, WHY SOME PRO ATHLETES HAVE A PROBLEM SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS OR

SPEAKING TO SCHOOLS! FROM THEN ON, I MADE A PROMISE TO MYSELF TO BE AN ATHLETE THAT WOULD SIGN EVERY AUTOGRAPH AND TALK TO KIDS AND HELP THEM BE ANTHING

THEY WANNA BE.

11) What got you interested in baseball to begin with?

FUNNY STORY TOO! MY MOTHER WAS A MOM THAT COULDN’T STAND SEEING HER SON AT THE BOTTOM OF A FOOTBALL PILE.....SO MY DAD DIRECTED ME TO BASEBALL....GOTTA KEEP

THE WOMEN HAPPY RIGHT?!?! lol

12) Who was your favorite team/players growing up?

NEW YORK YANKEES BABY! DEREK JETER WAS AND STILL IS MY IDOL.....HE PLAYS THE GAME THE RIGHT WAY AND IS A CAPTAIN.

13) Can you tell us about your first experience of attending a Major League ballgame?

IN ONE SIMPLE BUT STRONG WORD! "WOW" EVEN TIL THIS DAY I GO AND SAY TO MYSELF......

"I CAN’T WAIT TO PLAY HERE." IT’S LIKE HEAVEN TO ME .

14) What are your other hobbies besides baseball?

I LOVE PLAYING CHESS, XBOX LIVE, POKER, AND SPADES.

ONE ON ONE WITH CARDINALS MINOR LEAGUER, C.J. BEATTY (cont.)

Page 15: SJ Magazine - March 2011

15

15) Do you play fantasy baseball or any other fantasy sports? How good are you at them if you play?

NO, I’M NOT INTO THAT YET.... BUT MY FRIENDS HAVE TALKED ME INTO PLAYING THIS

SEASON....I HEARD IT GETS REAL COMPETITIVE! SO I’M READY BABY!

16) How long do you expect it to take before you are promoted to the big club?

UMMMM....I’M NOT SURE. HOPEFULLY IF IT’S GOD’S WILL, I WILL BE PINCH HITTING IN 2 YEARS FOR TONY IN A TIGHT SITUATION :-)

17) Final question for you C.J. You have your own website and you are well known on Twitter

and Facebook. Can you give our readers your contact information for these sites?

SURE NO PROBLEM....

Spring Training is in full swing. The fans are optimistic about their teams since every team is undefeated. The itch for green grass, cold

beer, and the smell of hot dogs entangle the fans. Hope springs eternal during Spring Training.

It is also the time of the year where the prognosticators bring out their

crystal balls in an attempt to clearly see October. I will pretend I am Carnac the Magnificent and give my predictions.

NL East

1) Philadelphia Phillies The Phillies have the best rotation in baseball: Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Oswalt, and Blanton. They won 97 games last season

before adding Cliff Lee. At times last year, they struggled to score runs and having lost Jason Werth is not going to help.

They should have more than enough starting pitching to make up for it and to have the best record in the

National League.

2) Atlanta Braves The Braves are an up and coming team. Too bad they are in the same division as the Phillies.

The team’s big names are Heyward, McCann, and Uggla. The pitching staff is lead by Tim Hudson, Derrek Lowe, and Jair Jurrjens. I expect the Braves to contend for the Wild Card.

3) Florida Marlins

The Marlins are a good team that could compete in most other divisions. They have a good starting pitching staff: Johnson, Nolasco, and the inconsistent Javier Vazquez. Hanley Ramirez is the star of this team as a Shortstop. The Marlins can make some noise but it will be tough in this

division.

4) New York Mets Just examine the big names (at least before they become Mets): Santana, Beltran, Wright, Reyes,

Bay, and Rodriguez. Every season, this team looks great on paper but they do not fulfill their potential. I don’t think this season will be any different. It looks like the same old Mets to me.

5) Washington Nationals

I really like the Nationals in five years if they keep their young players and do not trade them away. They are building something special in Washington but they are not there yet.

They did bring in Jason Werth to add to the veteran presence of Livan Hernandez and Pudge Rodriguez. This team will surprise some people but will not win more than

75 games.

BREAKING DOWN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE WRITTEN BY: LARRYBUD

NL Central

1) Milwaukee Brewers This division is the hardest to judge. I could see any of the top four teams winning this division. The addition of Zack Greinke tips the

Brewers over the top for the division in my opinion. Braun, Hart, and Fielder lead this team’s offense. The Brewers should win this division in

a tight race.

2) Cincinnati Reds The Reds won the division last season with 91 wins and will compete for it this season. The

offense will be good with Votto, Bruce, and Rolen leading it. The pitching staff should be decent but they do not have the one good Ace on their team. They will be in the hunt for the NL Central

and the Wild Card.

3) Chicago Cubs The Cubs have a good rotation if they can stay healthy but their offense is not frightening too many people. The addition of Garza to the rotation with Dempster and Zambrano should be

formidable. They will put pressure on the Brewers and Reds but in the end, they will fall apart as usual.

4) St. Louis Cardinals The Cardinals went from the top of the division for these rankings to the fourth when Adam

Wainwright’s injury required Tommy John elbow surgery. He is out for the season. The Cards still have their “Co-Ace” Carpenter but he will be 36 in April. Albert is still a stud but will the non-contract extension lead to distractions later in the season? The Cards could still win this

division but I think the odds are becoming stacked against them.

5) Houston Astros The Astros will miss Oswalt, whom they traded last year at the trade deadline. Wandy Rodriguez is close to becoming the Ace of this staff. Brett Myers is a good pitcher. This team looks like they have too little offense to make a run at the division title but they should be close to being a .500

team.

6) Pittsburgh Pirates The Pirates lost 105 games last season. It appears they will lose another 100+ games this

season. They have a few really good pieces like 3B Pedro Alvarez and OF Andrew McCutchen. But the Pirates do not have enough talent to be competitive.

NL West

1) San Francisco Giants

The World Champs should win the NL West. Their rotation is really good with Lincecum, Cain, and Sanchez leading the way. In the Bullpen, “Fear the Beard” will continue to close games down. Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey are young cornerstones to the

offense of this team. The Giants will be hard-pressed to win the series again but they should make the playoffs and anything can happen once you make the playoffs.

2) Colorado Rockies

The Rockies have a lineup of young position players who have a ton of upside. They will soon be a team to be feared with Ian Stewart, Carlos Gonzalez, Seth Smith, and of course

SS Troy Tulowitzki. They have a decent pitching staff lead by Ace Ubaldo Jimenez and Closer Huston Street. This team is good and could fight for the NL West and the NL Wild Card.

3) LA Dodgers

The Dodgers have a decent team with a good pitching staff. The rotation is solid with Kershaw, Billingsley, Lilly, and Kuroda. They have a couple of outfielders leading their offense in Matt

Kemp and Andre Ethier. They should be around .500 again this season. They could get hot and contend but I would not count on it.

4) San Diego Padres

The Padres overachieved last year when they won 90 games. I would not look for them to overachieve again. They will be lucky if they go .500 this season. Mat Latos is a stud young

pitcher who is developing into a true Ace. The rest of the staff is decent but not good enough to contend for the NL West this season.

5) Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks have a good offense. They are going to need it if they are going to win games. Justin Upton, Chris Young, and Kelly Johnson are upper level players that have major upside.

Their pitching staff is below average.

NL Wild Card: Atlanta Braves NL Champion: Philadelphia Phillies

World Series Champ: Philadelphia Phillies

NL MVP: Ryan Braun Runner Up: Albert Pujols

NL Cy Young: Roy Halladay

Runner Up: Zach Greinke

Good luck to all the teams and fans and Play Ball!

After a long winter with more snow than one could want, I'm happy to say that the spring is almost upon us. And with the warmth and weather that

comes with spring, so does baseball. Spring Training is in full swing and the San Francisco Giants are done celebrating, Brian Wilson is done

partying with Charlie Sheen (hopefully) and they're ready to make an attempt to be the first team since the 1999-2000 Yankees to repeat.

So here it is, my 2011 MLB Preview.

AL East Division Winner: Boston Red Sox

Any baseball fan not living in Massachusetts has to scared by what they have put together in Boston. They made huge additions to the

lineup in Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford while also building up a stronger bullpen with Bobby Jenks. Last year's Red Sox struggled to

avoid the injury bug, but if this year’s Sox can, they could find themselves playing deep into October. The Sox will be rolling out a

lineup with Dustin Pedroia, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz. This lineup could give anyone nightmares, not to mention the pitching and defense that comes with

them. This year’s Red Sox could very well win 100 games for the first time in 64 years.

Wild Card Winner: New York Yankees

The past offseason was not your typical Yankees’ offseason of the past decade. The Yankees heavily pursued Cliff Lee and whiffed badly when he went to the Phillies. While in the process of

trying to woo Lee to New York and in a contract battle with Derek Jeter, the Yankees watched Carl Crawford turn in his Rays uniform and join their rival, the Boston Red Sox. With criticism coming in from all angles, the Yankees panicked and signed Bartolo Colon and Andruw Jones. Surely not what the Yankees planned to settle for. Now they're staring at a starting rotation of C.C Sabathia, a very shaky AJ Burnett, an unproven Phil Hughes, and an assortment of young pitchers. Even though they added Rafael Soriano to the bullpen, his efforts will be lost if the

starting pitching can't get them there. Even with this pitching problem, I have the Yankees slated in a Wild Card because of their lineup, which will still be one of the best in the league.

3rd place: Baltimore Orioles

The last time the Baltimore Orioles finished higher than 4th in the AL East was in 2004. The last time they had a winning season was in 1997. I think both of those are possible with this year’s

Orioles. After manager Buck Showalter took over last July, they finished 34-23. It seems as though Buck has brought out the full potential of this team, which has a lot of it. Matt

Wieters, who was ranked 12th in Baseball America's 2008 List of the Top 100 Prospects is in only his 3rd season. Brian Matusz, ranked 9th on their 2009 list was 15-14 in his first season in 2010. In addition to those two, the Orioles have a nice blend of young

22

prospects and veterans including Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Derek Lee and Vladimir Guerrero.

I don't expect the O's in the playoffs, but don't be surprised if they finish a couple games over .500.

4th place: Tampa Bay Rays

While I think the Rays took a step back this offseason, it'll be a short time before they're back. They lost big pieces of their team in Carl Crawford and Rafael Soriano, both going to division

rivals. Also gone is Matt Garza, who was traded to the Cubs. The Rays’ front office knows what they're doing though and they have received a plethora of draft picks in these moves, which is

what this team has built themselves on. The Rays also have many up and coming players on their roster, like Desmond Jennings who will have the role of replacing Crawford in left field. Jennings

enters 2010 as one of the Top 20 prospects in baseball along with young pitcher Jeremy Hellickson. In a brief stint with the Rays in 2010, Hellickson went 4-0 and had a 3.47 Era. Even though I have them finishing 4th this season, don't be surprised if the Rays are back in the

hunt next year.

5th: Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays’ biggest move this offseason was a move towards the future, dumping one of their best players but also the biggest contract in Vernon Wells. The Jays are getting younger and

working towards building their team for the future, but in 2011, they'll find themselves last in the always competitive AL East.

AL Central

Division Winner: Minnesota Twins

Two time defending AL Central Champions, the Min-nesota Twins will once again take the crown in 2011.

If they stay healthy, the Twins will have back two important pieces of the team that they didn't have

down the stretch in 2010. Justin Morneau missed the second half of the season with a concussion and

closer Joe Nathan missed the whole season with a torn ligament in his elbow which required Tommy John surgery. Pair these two with one of the best players in the league, Joe Mauer and you have a

playoff caliber team. If they're lucky, they'll avoid the Yankees who have swept them two straight

postseasons.

BREAKING DOWN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE (cont.)

Page 23: SJ Magazine - March 2011

23

2nd: Detroit Tigers

The Tigers made the biggest offseason splash in the AL Central, signing Victor Martinez, the catcher from the Red Sox. Martinez will be a nice addition to the lineup. Also on the Tigers, are

two young impressive young players in Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch. Jackson, who came over from the Yankees in a trade for Curtis Granderson, filled in for him very well and finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year voting to Neftali Feliz. Jackson will be a very good player in the major leagues for awhile. Boesch was called up in April of 2010 when Carlos Guillen went

down with an injury. Boesch caught fire when he first came up, winning AL Rookie of the Month in May and June before cooling off. Also, I don't think the Miguel Cabrera spring training drama

will be a problem at all and he should be ready and back to normal by the time the season starts.

3rd: Chicago White Sox

The White Sox added a good power bat to their lineup in the offseason, signing Adam Dunn to a four year, 56 million dollar contract. Dunn will help in the cleanup role with the White Sox but

I'm not too impressed by this year’s White Sox team. Perhaps Ozzie Guillen should stop arguing with Bobby Jenks, who's gone to the Red Sox, and focus on the team he has. This team is very old and the age could catch up to them this year. Seven of their starters are at least 30 years old, and

many are past their respective primes.

4th. Cleveland Indians

There's not much hope in Cleveland this year; but with a new general manager, they hope it can be turned around in this decade. (Although that’s not likely, because they do play in Cleveland.) The Tribe were almost silent this offseason, with the biggest addition being Austin Kearns, who

was playing backup in the outfield for the Yankees in 2010. Only a few years removed from having Cy Young winners in CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee, the Indians are again irrelevant in the

AL Central.

5th: Kansas City Royals

The Royals had a couple of big changes in the offseason, mostly in the rotation. With 2009 Cy Young award winner

Zack Greinke asking for a trade, the Royals traded him to the Brewers. Also gone from last year’s rotation is Gil Meche,

who retired after 10 seasons. Things aren't looking good for the Royals, who could easily lose 100 games this season.

AL West

Division Winner: Texas Rangers

The defending AL Champs have a very different look this year. Their top

pitcher, Cliff Lee, left to join the super rotation which was built in Philadelphia. This is still a very good team though, with defending and AL MVP Josh Hamilton who could very well win it again this year (we'll

get to awards in a bit). Besides losing Lee, the Rangers did a good job in the offseason. They signed Adrian Beltre, who's coming off his best season with the Boston Red Sox. Also joining the

Rangers this year is Mike Napoli, who the Rangers acquired from the Angels. I don't think this Rangers team will make it back to the World Series, but then again, most people doubted them

last year too.

2nd: Los Angeles Angels

The Angels may have lost out on Carl Crawford this offseason, but they did make a good addition to the outfield when they added Vernon Wells in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. While they may have taken on Wells' giant contract, Wells is a very good player that will be a huge addition to this outfield which now consists of him, Torii Hunter and Bobby Abreu. The Angels are also rolling out a very strong rotation of Dan Haren, Jered Weaver, Erving Santana and Joel Pinero.

3rd: Oakland A's

The A's were in the running for several top free agents this offseason. Lance Berkman declined

and Adrian Beltre also passed on a five year deal. The A's rebounded well and added Hideki Matsui, Josh Willingham and David DeJesus to their lineup. The A's also have a very young

rotation, including Dallas Braden, who hurled a perfect game last season. With a couple more moves in the upcoming years, the A's could get into the playoffs but not this year.

4th: Seattle Mariners

If you can't score runs, you can't win baseball games. Period. This has been the problem for the

Mariners for years, yet they still haven't done anything about it. They've had one of the best outfielders in the past decade and a Cy Young winner at the top of the rotation but still found

themselves out of the race by the All-Star Break last season, and ended up trading away Cliff Lee to the eventual AL Champs. I, among other people, turned a blind eye to the lack of hitting that this team has because their pitching was so great. It's not happening this year, and the M's will

again finish in the basement of the AL West. Although Felix Hernandez will again have a Cy Young type season.

AL Awards

AL MVP: Justin Morneau, Twins

If he stays healthy throughout the year, I could

easily see Morneau winning MVP. He had an MVP caliber season until he went down last year.

Runner up: Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox

AL Cy Young: CC Sabathia, Yankees.

Even with the questions at the end of the rotation for the Yankees, Sabathia put together a Cy

Young like season last year and will have to have another one if this team has hopes of making the playoffs.

Runner Up: David Price, Rays

When I see the this photograph (on left), it’s hard to

believe 19 years have passed since it was first captured. The old saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words, but the story told is dependent of

the receiving eyes. The young may see it as just another cover, marking just another moment in the

NCAA tournament. The longtime followers of the college game will see and remember one of the most

tragic events in sports, and the heart warming conclusion. But through my eyes, I see two young

men, one being UNLV forward Stacey Augmon, and the other being my brother, Loyola Marymount

center, Chris Knight.

In the photo, one man would win the national championship, with the other winning the hearts of

a nation. 1990 marks the last time that a mid-major program would be seated on the hoops throne. It also marks the last time LMU would be on the basketball map.

Hank Gathers is often described as one of the greatest college players of all time. I

describe him as one of the greatest persons I’ve ever surrounded myself with. Raised on the tough inner city streets of Los Angeles, role models were few. But I

often patterned myself after the kid that rose from the Philadelphia projects, doing all the right things to secure a better future.

Hank Gathers

February 11, 1967-March 4, 1990

His death was sudden and tragic, and he passed doing what he loved most, which was performing on the court. And every year when March arrives, it takes me back to my seat in the Gersten Pavilion bleachers, where I will again watch him fall. It’s a

journey back to some of the darkest days for myself and family. But at the same time, I can reminisce on the courage and desire of a team to fulfill a dream in honor of a

fallen teammate.

THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: MEMORIES, MADNESS, AND ME WRITTEN BY: TROJAN HORSE

Page 28: SJ Magazine - March 2011

28

My brother was given the unfortunate task of replacing Gathers as the team’s starting center. Some will never be able to grasp how difficult it was, especially when no one on the roster wanted to ever play the game again. In a moment of death, love

for the game was lost, and love for each other was intensified. It took a lot of persuasion just to put the ball back in their hands and the competitive drive in

their hearts.

Hank died during the opening round of the WCC tournament, and the remainder of the event was immediately canceled, with Loyola unanimously voted to receive the automatic bid to the Big Dance. The NCAA tournament committee couldn’t promise the program a good seeding, but did promise to keep the Lions close to home, which

they did.

As I’d always done, I traveled and followed the 11th seed Lions on their tournament journey. A team scrutinized for years over their conference and strength, embarked

on a tournament run that wouldn’t end until they reached the Elite 8, breaking records along the way. The national audience admired a group of men so dedicated

to their goal, without knowing how much courage it took to ever suit up and lace their sneakers. They drew huge applause in nearby Long Beach for the opening

games, but even more praise in the San Francisco Bay area for the round of Sweet 16.

On the plane bound for San Francisco, I wore my “LMU Basketball” shirt, which was

available only to members of the team and coaching staff, given to me by my brother. Passengers pointed and cheered, as I walked the aisle to my seat. Walking across the

San Francisco airport, the applause was more boisterous and in more numbers. Some travelers and airport employees would scream to my mother and I that “Hank is still here” and the dream will be fulfilled. And despite the caption on the cover of

that Sports Illustrated magazine, the dream was captured and goals achieved.

Before the death of Gathers, few in the country had heard of the tiny Catholic school or could tell you where it was located. Hank once said he passed on the NBA to stay

his senior year at Loyola to put the program on the map. And sharing a city with basketball power UCLA, In 1990, he did.

After plowing through New Mexico State, Michigan, and Alabama, preserving the memories became more important than any victory. Loyola Marymount played the Running Rebels in Las Vegas earlier that season, and had a good

showing.

THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: MEMORIES, MADNESS, AND ME (cont.)

Page 29: SJ Magazine - March 2011

29

At one point, the Lions led, and the Rebels were being run out of their own gym. But

a bomb scare in the building seemed to change everything, delaying play and allowing the home team to catch their breath and power their way to victory.

The rematch in the Elite 8 was different. Hank Gathers was no longer a physical

presence, and the team was still wrapped in the emotion of his death. Coach Paul Westhead had a choice to make, and he chose not to use earlier game footage as part of the team’s preparation, as it showed Gathers active on the court. The Lions went into the game blind, giving it one final push, and never quitting until the horn had sounded. UNLV went on to beat LMU by 30 points on that day, and advanced to the

Final Four.

A trophy can measure the strength of a program, but Loyola’s participation and success measured the hearts of men. From my experience, I know the latter is the

greatest measure in life, and never was I so proud of my sibling than in this wake of circumstances.

Time after time, I’ve told Deb, I’d share this story with Sports Jabber. And with each attempt, I find it difficult to keep brief. Through my eyes, that picture covers more

than a thousand words, as it’s an endless story, with the experience altering the lives of everyone surrounding it. I continue to carry it on my walk through life, imple-

menting the occurrences as a tool for personal strength, and incorporating the les-son to students I now tutor and mentor.

Another accomplishment from the spring of 1990 was the removal of any personal

feelings of solitude. During some of the most dreadful times in my life, I move forward and on to reach my goals, because I know and feel…Hank’s still here. And

with his guidance, as displayed by a group of heavy hearts beating in unison, nothing is unattainable, as long as one can dream.

Rest in Peace Hank Gathers
