If you or your family are a citizen of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, you will need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme, following the UK’s exit from the EU, irrespective of how long you have lived in the UK. A representative from the Citizens Advice will be holding drop-in sessions at school on 15 th October (time to be advised), for anyone needing advice or help with their application. Please ask at the school office. For further information visit: https://www.citizensadvicebcp.org.uk/home/eu-settlement-scheme/ Guidance can be found at: www.gov.uk/eusettledstatus HELP NEEDED - Library Bus - Our fantastic library bus is almost ready to go but some books still need labelling before the children can start to use it. Could you spare a few hours to help us to get this finished? If so, please speak to Mrs Lipscombe in the office. Thank you. Reading Books and Reading Diaries - Your child will now have their reading book and diaries, with details about their Book Band colour and targets, suggestions to help with reading at home, and space to record your child’s reading. Please encourage your child to look after their diary and to bring it to school every day. Reading together is one of the most important ways in which you can help your child. We would ask that you try to find time to read with your child every day at home. The session does not need to be too long 10 minutes is fine. Thank you for your support it really makes a difference. Oxford Reading Buddy - We are delighted to tell you that our school is now using Oxford Reading Buddy. This is a digital reading service to support children’s reading development at home and at school. It contains hundreds of digital books and book-quizzes all matched to each child’s reading ability. Please log in to Oxford Reading Buddy when your child brings home their sign-in card (stuck in the back of their Reading Diary) and encourage them to use it regularly. You can write digital reading as well as print books in their reading diary. If you don’t have a tablet or PC at home the service works on smartphone as well. For more information go to this address and choose Parent Support: https://support.oxfordreadingbuddy.com/ Open Mornings Following our very successful Open Mornings and Afternoons, we will be holding these again this academic year. The Open Mornings will be on the following days, from 9.00 10.30am: Tuesday 5 th November for ‘A’ classes (Dragonflies, Badgers, Owls, Glasgow, Manchester, York, Oxford) Tuesday 12 th November for ‘B’ classes (Bees, Otters, Kestrels, Durham, Southampton, Liverpool, Cambridge) Tuesday 19 th November for ‘C’ classes (Ladybirds, Hedgehogs, Kingfishers, Warwick, Bristol, Edinburgh, UCL) You will be able to join the classes from 9.00am and stay until 10.30am please do come and join us and take part in your child’s learning of maths. However, if your child is in Dragonflies, Bees or Ladybirds class then you will be able to take part in an English lesson. Parents’ Evenings - These are taking place on the following dates: Wednesday 27 th November (3.30 6.30pm) Thursday 28 th November (3.30 7.30pm) You will be able to book your appointment time shortly, when we open the electronic booking system information on how to do this will be made available Food at lunchtime It is our policy to encourage the children to eat as much of their food at lunchtime as possible, as this does make a difference to how they approach their learning in the afternoon. With the exception of YR and Nursery, we all eat together in the hall. Many of the teaching staff sit to eat lunch with the children, as we believe this provides an opportunity for the children to talk to the adults in school and enables the staff to get to know the children. We do have the following rules: 1) Hot lunch children are required to ask if they can eat their pudding as this enables the staff to check that they have eaten their main meal. 2) Sandwich children have to show their lunchbox to a staff member before they leave the hall and are only allowed to leave one item. 3) Children have to ask to leave the table so that checks can be made if they have eaten their food. Beginning of the day We close the gates into school at 8.50am as all children should be in class by that time. If you find that the gates are closed then you will need to come in via the main entrance on Lowther Road. It is really important that all children are in school on time and ready to start their learning at 8.50am. Attendance - Our current attendance is 95.6%. We are below the national expectation of 96%. The class with the best attendance for the last two weeks is Glasgow. Well done and keep it up! Please make sure your child is on time and in school every day. Curriculum Update - There has been lots of writing happening across school over the last two weeks. Many budding authors are displaying their skills in their story writing and book making, with Year 2 producing some Awesome Authors. Across Key Stage 2 (Y3-6) the children are busy writing in a range of styles including quest stories and fantasy tales. In Year 5, the children are developing their trilogies and Y6 are creating the story for a wordless book. The children in FS2 have also been busy, enjoying the start to their Rhyme Time project with some special visitors, Jill (one half of the famous duo Jack and Jill) and the mouse who ran up the clock (from Hickory Dickory Dock!). Meanwhile in Year One the children have been using their detective skills to look at famous paintings and developing their art skills to create their own masterpieces based on the work of famous artists. School Nurse Drop-In The school nurse will be in school on Weds 9 th October @ 8.45am. If you have any issues regarding your child, that you would like to discuss with her, please call round to the office at that time. School Photographs The school photographer will be in school on Friday 18 th October, to take individual photographs. If you would like sibling photographs, these will be available on a first come, first served basis, in the hall at the end of the school day.
