Background
Madera Unified has recently opened one Dual Language Immersion (DLI) school where Native English speaking children and Native Spanish speaking children come together in one classroom setting to become bilingual and biliterate:
Target Language = Spanish (90% instruction- K/1)
Second Language = English (10% instruction- K/1)

Madera Unified now plans to grow the Dual Language Program in the 2020-2021 school year by adding 2 new program school sites:
● Another Dual Language Immersion Program - 90/10 model
● Add 1 New *Heritage Language Program - 80/20 model

Offer a DLI Teacher Residency Program!
● Create a vehicle to recruit teachers for high-needs fields and locations;
● Offer recruits strong content and clinical preparation specifically for the kinds of schools in which they will teach;
● Connect new teachers to early career mentoring that will keep them in the profession; and
● Provide financial incentives that will keep teachers in the districts that have invested in them

● $12,000 Stipend!
● Summer Abroad Educational Experience
● 3 year DLI Teacher Contract with Madera Unified *upon successful completion of the program

8 Key Characteristics of Strong Residencies
1. Strong district/university partnerships;
2. Coursework about teaching and learning tightly integrated with clinical
practice;
3. 18-month residency teaching alongside an expert mentor teacher;
4. High-ability, diverse candidates recruited to meet specific district hiring
needs, typically in fields where there are shortages;

5. Financial support for residents in exchange for a three- to five-year
teaching commitment (min. 3 years in MUSD);
6. Cohorts of residents placed in “teaching schools” that model good
practices with diverse learners and are designed to help novices learn
to teach;
7. Expert mentor-teachers who co-teach with residents; and
8. Ongoing mentoring and support for graduates
