Similarly vegetable oils deteriorate faster at hightemperature and cause safety risk, hence notused in modern vehicles.

Mixture of castor oil and alcohol, glycols and

Why use a Grease?Grease offers unique characteristics which makes it

particularly useful in machine elementsStay where it is putAllows unattended service for long periods(sealed for life)

Requires less frequent application for areas ofpoor accessibilitySeals out contaminantsOperate over a wide temperature rangeSolid additives can be used without concern of

settling outLow leakage means they are effective in wornequipment

    Advantages over Oil

Grease stays in place because of semisolid naturewhereas oils flow away

Bearing designs simplified and maintenance workreduced as there is no oil pump/sump

For long time or packed for life applications greaseis preferred e.g.. electric motors, wheel bearings ofnew generation passenger cars, etc.

Grease works as a sealant in -

Dusty environment, cement plants, miningindustries etc.

    Corrosive water in paper mills

    Corrosive gases/liquids in chemical industries.

    Advantages over Oil

SOLID LUBRICANTS LIKE MoS2 AND GRAPHITE CAN BE

BLENDED WITH GREASES WHEREAS IN OILS THEY

    SETTLE DOWN.

DRIPPING AND SPATTERING ARE AVOIDED BY USING

GREASE IN APPLICATIONS LIKE FOOD PROCESSING/

    PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRIES

    GREASES ARE PREFERRED IN INTERMITTENT

    OPERATIONS.

    Why does your Car engine

performance lo ers ith age ?

  • 7/29/2019 Lubes Presentation

    129/139

    performance lowers with age ?

    1. Deposits in Fuel Injectors: Poor Ignition

    Reduced Acceleration

    Rough Idling

    2. Deposits on intake Valves: Restricts Air flow (affects fuel economy)

    Power Output

    Driving comfort

    3. Carbon Deposits in Combustion Chamber:

Leads to ORI (Octane Requirement Increase) High Engine Oil Consumption
