Dear Friends,

The Men’s Walk to Emmaus #21 had ended. What an invigorating,

uplifting spiritual experience! As I sat in the parking lot, I set up

the GPS to route me home,. Bummer. It was dead. Oh, well. Plan B:

I would use my cell phone GPS. Guess what? Dead cell phone bat-

tery. Double Bummer! I did not know how to get home. Being in

the Top 10 “Directionally Challenged” individuals in Wisconsin, I

asked God to route me homeward.

My weekend experience was not going to be ruined by dead batteries! God directed me to

Route 29, and I knew that would take me home. Relief! As I approached Wausau, the sun

was shining fiercely in my eyes. Yes, I saw two signs, one said “51” with another sign saying

something, but the sun was so bright, I couldn’t read it. My thought was that route 51

would run along with “29” for a few miles.

Next thing I knew, there were three exits for Tomahawk. This didn’t seem familiar at all,

but I argued with the signage and kept going. When I saw the sign for Rhinelander, I knew

I’d taken the wrong turn off. Now to turn around, return to Wausau, and drive HOME.

I was so physically exhausted from the weekend. What was normally a two-hour trip became

a three and one half hour trip. I realized that I wasn’t adequately prepared for the trip.

The car is still new to us, and we hadn’t put a map in it yet. The old car has a map for Ohio,

Illinois, Kentucky, Wisconsin, along with various other destinations. I wasn’t knowledgea-

ble regarding Route 29. I’ve only driven as far as Wausau, and since my trust was in the

GPS, I had neglected to check out the particulars.

Yes, the Lord heard my prayer and got me home safely and without falling asleep. Most of

my Central Wisconsin friends are familiar with these routes, but Marshfield and Neillsville

are my most frequent destinations. It was quite easy for me to get lost! I wasn’t familiar

enough with the area, and I took the wrong route.

Our faith journey can be like that. We’re faced with choices every day. These choices may

entice us to walk in unfamiliar territory, because we aren’t certain of the ways of Godliness.

Sometimes these choices are in the form of temptations that entice us to take the wrong

route. Perhaps we’re simply too weary to turn around and go back to the route that takes us

home to Jesus. Sometimes we spend too much time wandering around in a land that holds

no good thing for us. Be aware of your surroundings and the route set before you by the

Lord. There are no deviations from His route. “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way, and the

truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me” (John 14:6). So check your Bi-

ble and your spiritual GPS. Trust in the Lord instead of your gadgets. He’ll get you home!

Sometimes we find ourselves dealing with difficult and challenging seasons when it’s not easy to be out and about. Perhaps it’s due to the aging process or

debilitating illness. Let’s remember to always be present with our pray-ers, phone calls, cards, and visits. We are the body of Christ, members of one another.
