Everyone canrealise their inner PicassoDAYLESFORD is a creative town and spiritual home for artists of all genres. If you’re a little intimidated by a blank canvas, Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp Street) is holding two courses, confidently entitled ‘Everyone Can Draw’, and ‘Everyone Can Paint’. Indeed! If you have dreams of whiling away the hours in your cosy studio creating works of art, this could be for you! Both courses are open to everyone of any age, with minimal experience. They are about experimenting with new mediums, developing skills and opening the mind to encourage those creative visions move out of your head and onto the canvas. Everyone Can Draw will be held weekly (eight sessions) from Monday, October 3. 5:50pm ‘til 7:30pm. Cost $290. IT IS notoriously tricky to fill two weeks with excellent (screen-free) school holiday fun. Daylesford Library (33 Albert Street) to the rescue… Primary school aged kids are invited to turn off the telly, put the iPad away, close the laptop, shut the DS, hand back the Wii controllers to Dad, and head to the Library for some fun in the dirt. (Yep, we said dirt, not books)! Monday October 1, Tuesday October 2, and Wednesday October 3, kids are invited to come along, (2:30-3:30pm) to plant some seeds, make a flowerpot to take home, and hang out and listen to some stories. The seeds will be watered and watched by our green thumbed librarians, and when your seedlings are big enough they’ll be transferred into the community garden next door. Hot diggety, we’ve diedand gone to hot rod heavenWELL before Castlemaine had a reputation for fine arts, food and culture, it had a reputation for car polish, gleaming chrome, and fat tyres. We’re talkin’ hot rods. Purring works of art on four wheels. Castlemaine is most certainly the Hot Rod Capital of Australia, and each year the wee village of Newstead (just down the road from Castlemaine) roars into life as it hosts the ‘Chopped Rod & Custom’ weekend. Chopped is a fusion of music, fox tails, flames, fashion and rockabilly retro held over three days (this year: Friday October 5, to Sunday, October 7) at the Newstead Racecourse (Jockey Drive). Come for the cars, the music, the nostalgic 50s/60s style, the dirt drags, or the artisan paintwork and blinding, gleaming chrome. Thousands of coiffed rodders and roddettes from around the country are expected to converge for the three day festival, camping is available – or grab a day pass for access to fantastic live music, the low brow art show and custom cars, cars, cars. Over the weekend 18 bands will take the stage including the wonderful bluesy-cowgirl-rockabilly songstress Lanie Lane on Saturday night, as well as faves: Howlin’ Steam Train, Frankie Albini & The Fugitives, Fraser A Gorman and plenty more. Kick back in the Tiki Palace bar with a cocktail, the much loved Chopped DJs will be dishing up some tunes and swingin’ 60s style. You wont be able to see them underneath the bamboo, tikis and ‘Easter Island head’ – but you’ll hear them for sure – (just look for the flames shooting skywards out the top of said head). Music kicks off Friday from 3:30pm, till the wee hours, (try not to peak too early, bands take the stage again from 9am Saturday, and again Sunday from 9am).Weekend passes (including camping fees are $70 + booking fee). HOW much Folk and Blues can you take in a day? Head to Daylesford for the Spring Folk & Blues Festival on Saturday, October 13, to find out! It’s an entire festival-worth of seriously fab folk and broody blues shoe-horned into one enormous day at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street). The live line up features Lloyd Spiegel, Suzie Dickinson, Geoffrey Williams, Alex Burns and Jen Hawley, Sweet Mona’s Choir, Fat Chance, Table Hill Band, George Condos, Vanessa Craven and Band, and Family Farm.There are workshops on everything from steel guitar to Manouche Caravan Gypsy Jazz and free whiteboard sessions, instrument makers displays and buskers galore.Bands hit the stage from 11am, and full day, half day, evening and workshop tickets can be purchased at the Town Hall from 10am. FRESH off the stage at the MCG, Tim Rogers has decided to attempt bigger and better things. Sure, singing for roughly 100,000 rowdy peeps on Grand Final Day is swell, but hey, who hasn’t done that right? Tim has booked himself in for (possibly) the show of his life at The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine). Tim Rogers’ (sizable and impressive) music career has spanned decades, he is a notable pedigree rock dog/god and is well loved both on and off the stage. Recently Tim collaborated with songwriter Shel Rogerstein to create his latest album Rogers Sings Rogerstein. See Tim sing tunes from this album at the Theatre Royal Saturday, October 6. THE Ballan Feast is indeed a feast for all the senses with art, food, music and performance, and it’s all featuring on the 2012 program. Saturday, October 13, you’re invited to join the feast: At 3pm be enveloped in a soundscape (‘Nameless The Land Her Names’) by local composer Christina Eira. At 4pm come to the opening of a new exhibition by renowned local artist Lou Callow. Lou is one of the Central Highlands most significant artists. This body of work has been inspired by the trees Lou watches from her studio window. The exhibition is appropriately titled ‘Tree Space.’ The wild old gums captured on canvas and in sculpture are vibrant, ethereal and spiritual. At 5.30pm partake in a dinner feast at the Mill Rose Café (Main Road Ballan) or head to St Brigid’s Gathering Space for a delicious Russian Gypsy feast. The trials and tribulationsof a sheep dogTHE VILLAGES around here are boutiquey, pretty, and have coffee to rival any city laneway pop-up-hole-in-the-wall-cold-drip-eco-latte, but despite the city slickery you’re still deep in the country folks. And that means farmers, farms, sheep and sheep dogs. The Castlemaine and District Agricultural Society is hosting the annual Sheep Dog Trials, Saturday October 20 and Sunday October 21 at Camp Reserve, (Forest Street Castlemaine).Come and see dogs named Blue, Red and Fang (no blow-dried hand-bagged Fifi, Fluffy and Princess pooches allowed), race around and herd up wayward sheep into pens with freakish skill. THE BRACKENBURY is an event like no other. No really. Every man and his dog claims to be “like no other” but only The Brackenbury can claim to host a combination of events including: a half marathon, 5 and 10km foot races, penny farthing racing, an Ultimate Frisbee Challenge, mountain bike races, a penny farthing vs mountain bike Duathalon, fishing and photography all under one banner. The word ‘random’ has been so over-used in recent years… but we’re hard pressed to find another more apt.Hellooooo… RANDOM!The Brackenbury, (to be held in Creswick Saturday, October 20, and Sunday, October 21), is a festival of action, sweat, wheels and fun for families, athletes and those just wanting to try something new. Mountain biking will be criss-crossing nearby hills and forest. The duathalon, (penny farthing vs mountain bike) ride/run will see the cycle course vary for the two types of bike, with the finishing line being the same. The race to the line promises to be a spectacle like no other! The Brackenbury introduces a new Frisbee team sport (Ultimate Frisbee). Combining elements of soccer, netball and American football, there will be demonstrations of this high energy (random) new sport on Saturday, October 20, at 10am and 1pm. The tournament is Sunday, October 21. Register from 9am. The Frisbee flies from 9:30.If all this sounds a bit bone-breakingly hectic, the quieter pursuits of fishing (to be held at St Georges lake) and the photography competition will be a time to regain your resting heart rate on both days. The photography comp is open to anyone photographing Brackenbury events during the weekend. If your photo is judged the best you’ll win a very cool $500 bucks thanks very much. TRENTHAM Golf Club’s popular annual Open Tournament is teeing off Tuesday, October 23 ’til Sunday, October 28. This five day golfing feast promises fantastic competitive golf, and a significant amount of friendly rivalry. The Trentham course is beautiful (not that you’ll notice following that little ball around all day) and challenging, (read previous comment about chasing that little white ball)…This year’s tournament events include: a women’s 18-hole Open Stroke, a men’s and women’s 4BBB Stableford, a mixed and men’s 4-person Ambrose, mixed and men’s American Foursomes, and a men’s 36-hole Open Stroke. IF you can’t navigate your way out of a box of cornflakes, best turn the page, coz this ain’t for you…Sunday, October 21, mountain bikers from all over shall compete in the 5th annual Cyclic Navigator. Traversing the hills, roads, tracks, and trails of Wombat State Forest. You can tackle the course solo or in pairs, in four or six hour rides. The deal is: it’s a bike ride though the bush, but you have to find your way with a map and compass, dodging mine shafts and rogue wombats along the way. Peace, love and algebraIt’s Dharma day!DAYLESFORD is home to Australia’s first Buddhist school, an independently run, not for profit primary school with teachings and philosophies stemming from Buddhist ideology. The Dharma School (11 Perrins Street, Daylesford) practices inclusiveness, so offers low fees for families. To help the school raise much needed funds they are hosting Dharma Day (Sunday, October 21), at Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street). You don’t need to be part of the school to enjoy the days’ activities, it’s a day for everyone to celebrate our amazing community spirit and cultural diversity. The day is run in two parts… (and being Buddhist it’s all about kindness and karma baby)… The morning session (11am ‘til 12:30pm) is a super excellent kiddie sesh with loads of great kids’ activities and fun. Entry is by gold coin donation and all proceeds go to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. (ASRC) The School is asking everyone to donate to the ASRC, bring along some non-perishable food, or other necessities (check the full list of required items on their website). The items will be blessed, and given to the Centre with much love and compassion from us all. The afternoon is time for the adults to sharpen their wits (and pencils), for the Quiz. (To be held 2pm ‘til 5pm). Tickets are $25 per person - (or book a table of ten and get one ticket free.) Geoffrey Williams and the Daylesford Swing Band will be performing live, afternoon tea will be provided by Ego’s Catering (hello… yum), and there’ll be amazing live and silent auctions, prizes and raffles all day. The major prize in the silent auction is a cracker. The winner will have their backyard transformed by a local landscaping legend while they are whisked away for lunch and massages for two. (Forget the blitz… this is Backyard Bliss). Whilst the parents are slogging it out in the quiz the littlies will be well looked after with fully supervised child care available on the day, with lots of fun and afternoon tea for them too) (and this means extra think time (and extra afternoon tea) for the adults!) Get your Muckle onat MucklefestJUST outside Castlemaine is a town with possibly the best name on the Victorian map. Muckleford. And each year Muckleford puts on Mucklefest. (Possibly the best name any festival has ever been given). Mucklefest is a celebration of all things Vintage. Specifically, historic vehicles and machinery. Love an old engine? Love a vintage tractor pull? Love a bit of noisy old mechanical stuff with pistons pumping and smoke blowing? Well, Mucklefest is your fest. It’s one big day of steam trains, vintage cars, heritage horses, rides and family friendly entertainment. The event will be held at the historic Muckleford Train Station (Leechs Road) in the heart of the Central Victorian Goldfields. Sunday, October 28, from 10am ‘til 4pm. The Festa concludes each year with a fireworks display held at the Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve. (Sunday, November 4). Before the fireworks crack into the night sky, local families wander down the path, through the bush, to the reserve carrying illuminated hand made lanterns to guide the way.Local school kids will be attending workshops this month, to create their own special lanterns to carry during the parade. IT MAKES sense that Woodend (being at the end of the woods) is the perfect place for bears to live… The bears of Woodend are out of their PJs after winter hibernation, and are venturing out of the woods to make an appearance at The Seventh Annual Woodend Teddy Bear Show. (Sunday, October 28). Bear makers from Australia and abroad will be competing and displaying their beautiful hand crafted bears. There’ll be over 40 stalls, with hundreds of soft-and-fuzzy-big-brown-eyed bears just begging you to take them home. (Resistance is useless)! THE Kyneton District Racing Club (now known as the Kyneton & Hanging Rock Racing Club) is the oldest registered Country Victorian Racing Club, first formed in 1852, with the first race meet conducted at the NMIT Kyneton Park in 1853 with the first official running of the Kyneton Cup taking place 20 years later in 1873. The NMIT Kyneton Cup still forms an important part of Melbourne Cup week as it is held on the first Wednesday in November each year on the banks of the Campaspe River, under 100 year old Elms, it’s a full day of entertainment for the entire family with live music, DJ, roving entertainment, fashions on the field, boutique food stalls, master of ceremonies, punters club, pamper tent, prize draws. HARRY and Me is a sweet little shop with a cute little story. This new Daylesford boutique (opened mid-September) is the brainchild of Amanda Fontanella, and her brainy-child Sarah Storer (still with us?)… and is named after Sarah’s son Harry. (aww). That’s three generations represented up the steps and behind the freshly painted doors at 57D Vincent Street. If you think Sarah and Amanda look a bit familiar, you’re not mistaken, Sarah and her hubby run Larder two doors up at number 57A, and Amanda tends the vines at Fontanella Winery with husband John at Glenlyon. Amanda had always dreamed of running a store, so when the perfect space became available two doors down from her daughter’s café, (and that awesome coffee machine) well… it was too good to be true. This super-amazing Mum and Daughter team pulled off the feat of the year by renovating this tired old shop space from floor to ceiling (and what a perdy pressed iron ceiling it is) …in four short (little-bit-backbreaking) days. FOUR DAYS!And they are not only still speaking to each other, the store is a haven of peace and calm and heavenly handmade loveliness for kids to age three, and mamas with style, (sure dad, you get a bit of a look in too). Most of the clothing and accessories are handmade in Australia, with some exclusive pieces coming from independent designers (a few are mums themselves, who whip up their unique pieces from home). They also stock elk clothing, shoes and accessories (drool), artisan paper products, divine candles from Kobo and loads of things you just want to touch (guilty of that last bit). Once a month they roll out the heritage Silver Streak, a restored diesel rail car, and chug off into the Wombat State Forest, laden with local wines, delicious appetisers and live music. It’s the perfect entrée to a night out in Daylesford. The next Premium Food and Wine Train will depart Daylesford Station (14 Raglan Street), Saturday, October 6, at 5:30pm, returning at 7pm. HEPBURN Wildlife Shelter open their doors to hundreds of injured birds and animals each year. Their tireless efforts to save, heal and return animals to the bush is extraordinary. All the more that they do it on an entirely voluntary basis, from their home just outside of Daylesford. HWS is a self-funded registered charity completely reliant on donations. (Look… we’re just going to say it… Jon and Gayle from the shelter are local heroes).On Wednesday, October 31, Christine from 65 Main Guesthouse, (yes, at 65 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) is opening her guesthouse to host the second annual Village Family Soiree. Drink bubbles and listen to the bubbles (the charming ‘Champagne Serenades’ will be performing the evening’s live entertainment), catch up with friends, eat, drink and celebrate in the name of community spirit on a night of fundraising and fun. 100% of proceeds will be donated to the Hepburn Wildlife Shelter, so you can have a sparkling night out with friends knowing that you’re supporting the wonderful work at the shelter, and helping to care for our precious bushland friends. THE Twentieth year of the Hepburn Springs Swiss and Italian Festa kicks off on Tuesday, October 30, with the Annual Dulux Landscape Art Prize and Exhibition. Entry to the exhibition is open right up until 4pm the eve before the opening. In its sixteenth year the competition showcases the talents of a myriad artists in the region. The Festa always ends with a bang (bang bang) with the fireworks finale and a gorgeous wee trek through the bush with kids carrying handmade lanterns.
