WoodendWinter Arts FestivalWOODEND is a beautiful village with a big arts heart. For eleven years now the town has hosted a Winter Arts Festival, a celebration of the arts in its many, many forms. This year the Woodend Winter Arts Festival has a significant music program, an always popular literary program, a fine art program, and a schools program for all ages. The music program features the piano in the form of the mighty Steinway grand, and the huge repertoire written for it. International guests Nikolai Demideno (London), and Y-Squared (Manchester) are coming to show us their masterful skills on this impressive instrument. Some of Australias’ finest pianists (including Simon Tedeshi, Timothy Young and John O’Donnell will also be playing). Italian violinist Davide Monti is returning this year to perform his style of Baroque Violin. Festival faves Ensemble Gombert and Accademia Arcadia will perform brilliant liturgical works of Haydn and Mozart at St Ambrose Church. This year’s literary program focuses on news and politics with interesting panels and discussions including guests: James Button, Gay Alcorn, Gareth Evans, Michael Bachelard and Mary Delahunty. There will be fascinating workshops on genealogy and poetry. Deb Westbury will launch the upcoming writers’ program with Writers Victoria Director Kate Larsen. The Fine Art program celebrates our many exceptional local artists. Have lunch with botanical artist Craig Lidgerwood, and peruse exhibitions featuring the fine arts of Macedon Ranges Potters Group, Macedon Ranges Arts Group and Kyneton Arts Group. The program is designed so that you can consume as much of the arts as you possibly can, or just sample bits here and there at your leisure. Inspire and immerse yourself in this magical weekend of the arts. The festival will be held Friday, June 5, - Monday, June 8. Fireworks lighting up the winter skyTO OUR furry four legged friends, just a little word of warning… Friday, June 5, there will be a super spectacular (and rather bangy) fireworks display to launch the Woodend Winter Arts Festival (So just hang out under the couch until it’s over!) And to all our human readers… The annual fireworks display will be held at Woodend’s Buffalo Stadium Oval. So leave the couch for your dog and head over for a great family night out. This year the fun begins at 5:30pm, with food stalls, entertainment, and a lantern parade – with large scale lanterns created by local school kids and Public Mischief. The first of the fireworks will light the sky from 6:30pm. (Weeeeee ahhhhhh!)This is a free event for all. For the full Woodend Winter Arts Program go to woodendwinterartsfestival.org.au.

Castlemaine……and all that JazzJAZZ ain’t just Jazz baby. Jazz is such a diverse genre of music, encompassing everything from New Orleans rag to bebop, standard ballads, West Coast cool and fusion, from the traditional to the contemporary. The Castlemaine Jazz festival is gaining a following as being a fantastic annual event for lovers of the genre, and it’s on again this month, Friday, June 5, till Sunday, June 7. Clear the diary, pack the pork pie hat and hit Castlemaine to take in as much jazz as you can. Over 85 bands are coming to town. There’ll be workshops, awesome gigs with big bands, small groups, singers and soloists, open mic spoken word jazz, jam sessions for musos and visitors, and the much loved jazz train is running once again, (departing Saturday and Sunday, twice each day.) Day passes ($55) and weekend passes ($80) are available. For more info, tickets and the full program go to castlemainejazzfestival.com.au.

NLNLDance like no one’s watchingDANCE like no one’s watching. It’s the quote that launched a thousand bad loungeroom interpretive dance sessions. If you’re ready to leave the loungeroom dancefloor, (and your feline audience on the couch) and if you want to bust your moves elsewhere (but still have the comfort of no one watching), you might consider coming to the next NLNL session. NLNL (No Lights No Lycra) is a worldwide dance phenomenon where you are invited to dance in the dark to great music in a safe and inclusive environment (not even your cats can judge you here). NLNL is a casual free form dance space you can join in just to experience the joy of dancing. Dress comfy, bring a water bottle and strut your awesome stuff for an hour. The next NLNL session will be held at the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (High St) Saturday, June 6, 7-8pm. Entry $5. For more info call the centre 5424 1354.

Farmers’ markets the super-est markets“UNEXPECTED item in the bagging area” is something you won’t hear at a Farmers’ Market. You know why? Because farmers aren’t grumpy computers with a bad attitude. The Daylesford Farmers’ Market (held at Daylesford Primary School, Vincent St.) is a much-loved monthly event. The Market brings the best local produce from the region to one place for you to browse, taste and buy. The next market will be held Saturday, June 6. Come and wander the stalls, hot coffee in hand, and buy a week’s worth of food direct from the person who grew it. (Feels so good… tastes even better!) The produce at a farmers’ market is fresh picked, and grown close by. The only food miles are from the farm to here. Doesn’t get much better than that. Meet the grower and have a chat! Promise they won’t hassle you to PLEASE TAKE YOUR ITEMS if you hang around. The Daylesford Farmers’ Market runs 8am-1pm.

Happy Birthday(and thanks for the long weekend!)

There’s nothing poultryabout chickensLIFE in the country usually involves a few chooks. If they’re lucky they have names, if they’re really lucky they might even have their own Instagram page, but mostly, they just strut around the backyard doing their thing and delivering cartons of bright yellow yolkers daily. Good onya chooks. If you take pride in your poultry, (chooks, ducks, and the like) and would like to see some of the best in the region, the Kyneton and District Poultry Club is hosting their annual show, Sunday, June 7, from 9:30am, at the Horace Don Pavilion, Kyneton Showgrounds. Enter your own feathered friends or take a gander at some of the finest and more unusual breeds… There are loads of prizes, and the champion bird will win $250. (That’s not a bad day in the hen house.) For more info, including classes, entry details, and how to join the Poultry Club (come on… you know you want to!) go to kynetonpoultryclub.com.au.

WOULDN’T it be great if you scored a long weekend each year for your birthday? Thanks for sharing it with us Your Royal Highness. You’re the best. The Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend is always a treat in Daylesford, such a snuggly, cosy time, with a bonus extra day to perch in front of an open fire with a bottle of something local and fabulous and all your favourite people. What’s not to love about that?! At the Daylesford Cider Company (155 Dairy Flat Road, Musk) they’re hosting a long weekend of amazing local food sourced by much loved chef Andrew Stone. On Sunday, June 7, highly regarded duo Cat and Clint will be playing a bit of old timey and vintage country tunes. Choose your preferred spot in front of the open fire or grab a table for two, there’ll be cider tastings at the bar and everyone’s favourite mulled cider will keep you warm ‘til home time. June is the perfect timeto see a movieWHAT’S better than a night at the movies? Sitting there, in a comfy chair, with snacks and friends being whisked away to another place, another time, or even another planet for 90-odd minutes. It’s all about switching off from whatever reality is happening in your life and being entertained. We just love going to the movies. Daylesford Cinema has an awesome program of films lined up for June. Starting with Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts’ comedy drama: ‘While We’re Young’. See the film based on a best selling memoir, the powerful WW1 drama: ‘Testament of Youth’ with Alicia Vikander and Kit Harington (AKA Jon Snow… hello!) Thriller, ‘One Eyed Girl’ is also screening in June, as is the much anticipated sing-fest ‘Pitch Perfect 2’. See Fat Amy back at her hilarious best. A film inspired by royal events: ‘A Royal Night Out’ is the story of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret leaving the palace to celebrate V.E. day in 1945. Or for a completely different tone and pace see action/drama flick ’71. Buckle up for ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. It’s rolling into Daylesford in June and by all accounts it is fast, furious and superduper action packed. Love a bit of Mad Max action! Daylesford Cinema is also screening ‘Dior and I’, a stunning fashion doco taking you behind the scenes at Dior. Ooh la la! Later in June Helen Mirren stars in the dramatic journey about recovering a priceless work of art by Gustav Klimt – ‘Woman In Gold’.There’s more drama with official Cannes selected film ‘Clouds of Sils Maria’, and more laughs with ‘Spy’ starring Melissa McCarthy. Animated Disney Pixar flick ‘Inside Out’ will entertain the whole family, and lose yourself in George Clooney’s action/adventure film ‘Tomorrowland’. So many brilliant films coming to town in June. Full program details are at daylesfordcinema.com.au or like them on FB (Do it! They’re nearly at 1000 likes!) See you at the movies!

Makers and craftersmovers and shakersWE ARE always impressed with crafty folk. People who dedicate their lives to creating ‘things’. Pretty things, arty things, cute things, smelly things, wearable things, cuddly things, quirky things, designy things, tasty things, awesome things. Somewhere right now, as you sit there idly reading this little magazine… (yes we can see you… hello there!) there is an army of crafters out there making THINGS!And some of these amazing things are being crafted for the Vincent Street Makers’ Market. The Vincent Street Makers’ Market only happens twice a year, and will be held Sunday, June 7, inside the Daylesford Town Hall (on Vincent Street! – Of course). The winter market will feature a huge variety of hand made goodness, created and crafted by clever regional designers, artists and makers. Trawl the trestles and discover hand crafted pieces to beautify your home and life! Unique jewellery, clothing and children’s wear, cute and cuddly things for littlies, soaps and ceramics and special treats and all manner of amazingness will be on display. Strike up a conversation with one of the makers and tell them how much you love their work – then buy something really awesome from them… guaranteed warm and fuzzies all ‘round. One of the great things to buy at Makers’ Markets are gifts. You’ll always find something unique for that person in your life who is notoriously difficult to buy for. Find them something they never knew they wanted. Or stock up on cute things for all your friends with babies. A groovy hand-made kid thing (hat/bib/blankie-toy-thing) is always brilliant to receive. And make sure you buy yourself a treasure or treat. It feels so good to buy something directly from the person who made it with love. The Vincent Street Makers’ Market will run from 10am – 3pm. For the latest info like them on Facebook: facebook.com/vincentstmakersmarket.

the slow cookerTime to dust off

Let’s talk about politics… no, reallyTHERE seems that another political biography, memoir or government analysis pops up on the bookshelves every other week… why is that? Because the inner machinations of parliament and political life is truly fascinating, that’s why. Two Australians with their fingers firmly on the pulse of Australian Politics - Mary Delahunty and Gareth Evans, will speak as part of the Woodend Winter Arts Festival (Monday, June 8, 10:30-11:30am). Mary has penned ‘Public Life Private Grief’, her own memoir about political life and loss, and her recent study on Julia Gillard, ‘Gravity: Inside the PM’s Office During the Last Year and Final Days’. Gareth Evans’ book ‘Inside the Hawke-Keating Government: A Cabinet Diary’ has recently been published. Hear them discuss their own books, their lives as politicians, and the political publishing phenomenon. Tickets $20. More info at woodendwinterartsfestival.org.au.

WINTER means footy season, ski season, and the best season of all… comfort food season. (Yay!) If you’d like to take your comfort food cooking to the next level Piper Street Food Co. (89A Piper St. Kyneton) is hosting a Mid Week Basics Braising Workshop Thursday, June 11, 10am – 12pm. Learn to create comfort food at its delicious best. This super tasty morning of learning will cover entrees, main courses, desserts and stocks. Learn the steps to slow cooked nirvana and just how awesome it is to prepare dinner hours in advance. (The best thing about a slow braise is that by the time it’s dinner time, you’ve almost forgotten that you prepared it waaay back in the morning… it kinda feels like some one else cooked you dinner. The best!) Stave off the winter blues with the heartiest of comfort food. For more info and bookings for the workshop go to piperstfoodco.com or call 5422 3553.

950 performancesand still going strongFIFTEEN years ago a group of locals started a monthly performance night, held at the old Palais in Hepburn Springs. The idea was to provide a space for folks of all abilities and talents to get up there and show us what they’ve got. Performance Night was an instant success with poets, songwriters, talented musos and many wild and wacky performers getting up there and doing their thing. In the past fifteen years more than 950 people have held the mic and sung/played/prosed/posed/and composed their little hearts out. Performers are judged by the audience’s applause and the winner takes the door money. It’s a very cool deal. Performance night has become a local institution, and it’s not just about entertaining the crowds, it’s a great chance for new talent to make themselves known to venue holders and different audiences, to try their new ideas onstage to see what works. It’s a unique opportunity – a win-win for the audience and performers alike. These days Performance ‘Night’ is held on the first Sunday of every month at The Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) – It is actually now a Performance Afternoon scheduled from 2pm. This month Performance Arvo celebrates its 15th birthday (hooray!) in a massive afternoon of performances: Sunday, June 7. Come and celebrate 15 years of awesome local live music at the Old Hep. The special birthday Performance Arvo will be held from 2pm – 7pm, (that’s a LOAD of acts to knock your socks off on a lazy Sunday arvo). (And heads up … that’s also the Queens Birthday Long Weekend… Monday, June 8, is a day off, so you can make it a big one and the old Hep Courtesy Bus can always give you a lift home! (Yay for birthdays! Yay for a Sunday Sesh!) Entry to the Birthday Performance Afternoon is $3. (No fee for performers.) For more information – or if you’d like to have a go up on the big stage (go on!) give Nel Staite a call: 0437 628 911.

A wheel of camembertmakes the world go ‘roundWE FEEL for the dairy intolerant. Oh we really do. Imagine a life without cheese?! Actually don’t. It’s too upsetting. Instead, imagine being able to whip up a wheel of creamy camembert in your own kitchen… Fancy as you please! Then imagine your friends’ faces as they marvel at your guru cheesemaker status and the awe on their faces as they squish a wedge of it onto their cracker. You totally rock at making cheese! Yes! Now step back out of your fantasy and book yourself into the Creswick Neighbourhood Centre Cheese Making for Beginners course, Sunday, June 14, 10:30am – 4pm. Learn how to make beautiful camembert in this easy to follow workshop – then take some home so you can show off later. Cost $100. All materials included. BYO Apron. Creswick Neighbourhood Centre is at 19-21 Victoria St. For more info and bookings call 5345 2356, or go to creswicknc.org.au.

THERE’S something about country music. It transports you to somewhere else. It removes you from your busy city-slicker life and sets you down on a dusty country road, with nowhere else to be. Bill Chambers (yes, Kasey’s Dad) is a self taught alt-country singer. He’s a gun on the guitar – considered by some to be Australia’s premiere Alt-Country guitarist – and not bad on a mic as well. Bill is currently on a national tour and he will roll in to the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) Friday, June 12, to play his brand of bluesy, alt-country tunes. Supporting Bill and band will be The Weeping Willows. (Yeah… such a treat!) It promises to be a brilliant Friday night at the Old Hep. Tickets are $20 (pre-booked via trybooking.com) or $25 on the door (unless sold out). For more info and bookings go to oldhepburnhotel.com.au or call 5348 2207.

Granny’s favourite chairgets a makeoverTHERE are some scary old upholstered dining chairs out there… Green cord velour monstrosities and ripped faded mustard damask, brown on brown atrocities and some chairs are hideously stained beyond recognition. (Ewww!) To re-upholster a dining chair not only drags your old chair into modern times, it can also rejuvenate an entire room. If you have a few dining chairs that could use a little love, or if you’ve had your eye on a few at the local op shop, but just can’t deal with the ugliness… Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19-21 Victoria Street) is hosting a one day DIY chair upholstering workshop, Sunday, June 21, 11am – 4pm. This course will suit beginners and all materials are supplied, just BYO chair, and your favourite fabric. Cost $150. Keeping Daylesford warmone stitch at a timeHOLD on to your hats folks… It’s time to talk about the weather. Oh we LOVE it here in Daylesford. It’s a hot topic (or um, cold… actually). You know how Melbourne is well known for its four seasons in one day? Well, Daylesford is not. From now until September, Daylesford will have only one season. Strictly one. JUST Winter. Three (maybe even four) months of SOLID winter. It’s proper cold stuff too, dense fog, mist, rain, tiny icy hail, frost, sleet, dustings of snow, bare trees, icy roads and short days. Brrrrr… It’s the kind of cold that gets into your bones. Lucky for us our lovely community is so warm. The second annual Keeping Daylesford Warm project is underway. Created by the dynamic knitting-and-crocheting duo Mell and Jules, the project was developed to help out those around town who are doing it a bit tough through our cold winter. The idea is to create lovely warm hand-made winter woolies and donate them to someone who could use something warm and made with love. Mell and Jules invite anyone to join in their quest to keep Daylesford warm, and knit an item to donate. If you can hand knit a beanie or scarf, socks or slippers, it will be gratefully received. But! Even if you can’t knit there are still ways to help. Donate full balls of 8 ply wool (or heavier) just call Mell and Jules and they’ll come and pick them up (0404 165 275) or join in the next Keeping Daylesford Warm Knit–In, Saturday, June 20, at Stanbridge Hall (Central Springs Road, Daylesford) 10am – 12pm. Mell and Jules will be giving out wool and patterns, and accepting any finished items. You’re welcome to stay and knit, and join them for a cuppa and a chat, or just drop in and tell them how awesome they are for caring about our community! Aww… It’s warm and fuzzies all ‘round people!! Yay! For more info call or email: [email protected] or like Keeping Daylesford Warm on Facebook: (facebook.com/keepingdaylesfordwarm)

The Village Winter Festivala magical placeWE totally love that spooky vibe that comes with this season. A chill in the air, mist and fog, bare trees and heavy low cloud. It feels little wild and other-worldly. In Castlemaine, there is a magical annual celebration of the Winter Solstice. The Village Winter Festival is a celebration of the nocturnal, the quirky, the bold, and a wild and other-worldly life lived in Castlemaine. The Festival will run Saturday, June 20, 12 noon till 11pm, at Castlemaine’s Victory Park.Warm your body and soul with the most creative Castlemainians in a fabulous celebration of fire, stories and theatre. Enjoy live music, circus, visual arts, physical theatre, and a little uncategorisable craziness.Stroll the festival and explore the colourful tents. Highlights include So You Think you Can Interpretive Dance, the Famous Village Dog Show (BYO doggies), partake in a little old-fashioned side-show fun (with old-style games and lolly shop), join in a 10 minute dance party, and see what Castlemaine’s youngest and brightest are up to on the Rascal-maine Stage. Watch the fire lighting ritual at dusk. This is the culmination of Stories of Castlemaine. True tales that dig into the history of this old town have been collected from the towns’ elders over the past few months. These old stories will be re-enacted and interpreted by five local community groups, and will be brought to life through steampunk theatre, music, circus, puppetry and a bit of pyro thrown in there as well. It promises to be a very special evening, something truly magical for the town, bringing to life some old stories and history in an exciting new way. Amazing food and drinks to warm the cockles will be on sale. Entry is $10 for adults, $5 for 13-17 year olds, and kids to 12 years are free. For up to the minute info on The Village Winter Festival like them on Facebook: (facebook.com/TheVillageWinterFestivalCastlemaine) or, go to thevillagefestival.com.au.

Tim Rogers

Here chook chook chook!chickens 101CHICKENS are so awesome. They’re sort of like pint sized personal gardeners that deliver free range eggs as a gift every day. They scratch around, depositing fertilizer, eradicating pests, munching on your kitchen scraps and happen to be rather adept at physical comedy. (AKA, hilarious.)So are you ready to leap into the world of chicken ownership? If you’re thinking about it, best get some advice from an expert. Fleur from BookAChook will be hosting a Backyard Chooks info session at Garden of St Erth (189 Simmons Reef Road) on Sunday, June 28 from 11am – 1:30pm. Learn all about the various breeds, housing, what to feed them and how to keep them healthy. Diggers Club Member $29, non-members $39. For more info and bookings call St Erth: 5368 6514 or go to diggers.com.au. Bok bok!

and The Bamboos in CastlemaineWE DON’T wish to alarm you, but this year marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Purple Sneakers by You Am I. Yep. In 1995 that little gem was released. (Yowser, feeling old now?) Tim Rogers hasn’t aged a day since then, (sure, neither have we) and he hasn’t stopped making ace tunes since then either. Most recently collaborating with fellow Melbourne musos The Bamboos. Together they have recorded a full length album (‘The Rules of Attraction’ – and quite clearly the attraction is mutual). Tim Rogers and The Bamboo have embarked on a big ol’ tour to promote the album, from Brisbane to Perth, with a couple of side-shows in-between, including what will be a pearler at The Theatre Royal, Castlemaine, Saturday, June 27, from 8pm. The gig promises to be an energetic, intimate night to remember. Sign us up. Tickets $39.90 (18+). For more info and tix go to theroyalc.com.au or call 5472 1196.

Fog and mist and sleet andMoss and BurrowsOH HELLO winter! There you are! We’ve been waiting all year for you. So great to see you… (said the Australian Winter Olympics team and no one else). Well… almost no one else. Winter in these parts is cosy. It’s foggy. It’s snug and open-firey. It’s all mittened hands and hugely chunky scarves and designer gumboots and OH OKAY OKAY… IT’S GORGEOUS TOO. Emma Taylor from Moss and Burrows (22 Raglan Street) totally loves that foggy cosy thing about Daylesford… So much so that she upped-stumps (with her family) from the land of perpetual sunshine (Western Australia) and moved here! For the cold! Is she nuts? No… she’s awesome. Her store, Moss and Burrows, is also awesome – and named after the countryside around here, all mossy and pocked with wombat homes. (Yes. Cute.) Her little boutique stocks an ever-changing mix of independent makers and designers as well as the much loved brands Lazybones and Saltwater Sandals. The store is decked out with well curated industria and second-hand finds.Just recently Moss and Burrows has opened a wee café instore. The Grumpy Farmer Canteen makes a mean Brewhouse coffee and has delish locally made pastries, cakes and treats by Tara Kiste Cake Emporium (pop in on a Sunday if you’re heading up to the Sunday market for insanely good just-out-of-the-oven Portuguese tarts and other sweet and savoury pastries, and a coffee to go). While you’re there check out the amazing handbuilt café benches by local artist Kaya Storm – made from recycled bits and bobs. So great. Emma is just about to fire up the jaffle maker and whip up some warming soups for winter lunches. Sit in front of the teeniest fireplace and warm your toes while you sip a soup. Winter perfection.Moss and Burrows (and the Grumpy Farmer Canteen) is open six days (closed Wednesdays) 9am – 5pm. (ish). Ph: 5348 4433. Like Moss and Burrows on Facebook, or for all the pretty pictures follow them on Instagram.
