The Sound of Silencein Winter

Shine Bright Like Dolly DiamondDOLLY Diamond has been singing all her life and has played everywhere; from the biggest concert halls, to the most rubbish scout huts, and now Dolly returns to Hepburn to play The Grande (a fitting venue we think – because she is so very) Friday, June 3, from 8pm. The Grande is a fab venue for cabaret. It’s tucked down at 1 Church Avenue, Hepburn Springs. Dolly promises to take her audience on a magical journey somewhere over the rainbow and leave them way up high. Weeee! Oh it’s going to be so fun! Originally from the UK, Dolly Diamond is a much loved performer who has toured the UK and Europe extensively, as well as performing all over Australia in cabaret festivals, the Sydney Mardi Gras, ChillOut, and other pride festivals around the country. Pre-show restaurant bookings are available, doors open at 7pm. Tickets are $20. For more info and bookings call The Grande: 5348 1978 or go to thegrandehotel.com.au

IT’S always a bit of a mental challenge to get through winter. If you can move to Queensland for the next three months you totally should. But if you’re like the rest of us, and committed to things like work and mortgages (zzzz… boring) you might need a bit of help. The Yoga Ashram at Rocklyn can totally put your head in a better place to cope with the endless fog of winter. The Ashram (at 393 Dean-Barkstead Rd.) offers a range of personal retreats including a Winter Silent Yoga and Meditation Retreat: Friday, June 3 - Sunday, June 5. Turn your focus inward, fine-tune your self awareness and quieten your busy mind. This silent retreat includes yoga asanasa and pranayama, meditations and yoga nidra deep relaxation, and will leave you feeling focused, calm and refreshed. Cost for the full three days is $283. For more info including other retreats and classes (and bookings) go to yogavic.org.au or call 5345 7434.

The Buzzon BeekeepingIMAGINE being the first person to put your hand into a bee hive, being stung senseless and thinking “and, now I’m going to put that sticky stuff into my mouth.” At some point in history that actually happened… and the rest of the human race thanks you Oh Strange and Daring Hive Guy, because honey is amazing. These days we can pluck a jar of honey off a supermarket shelf with the only sting hitting us at the register. More and more of us are deciding to venture into the world of apiculture and become DIY bee keepers, but there’s more to it than meets the eye… so the best place to start is with an introductory course to Natural Beekeeping. Creswick Neighbourhood Centre is hosting a big weekend bee workshop on Saturday, June 4, and Sunday, June 5, with natural beekeeper Warwick Bone. Natural beekeeping has a focus on the wellbeing of the bees, and when you look after your bees, they reward you with kilos of the golden stuff, so it’s worth knowing how to look after them properly. Natural beekeeping can be simple, low cost and low effort, (we like that) and can suit backyard beekeepers and even commercial efforts. This workshop will cover the theory and practical stuff and will help beginners get started with confidence.Learn all about our buzzy little friends in the garden, how to work with them, and what they need to stay happy and buzzing. Learn about the three most popular hive types (yes, there are different hive types… see, learning something new already…) learn about beekeeping boxes, see all the tools and equipment, check out a demo of a typical hive and of course… the best bit… do a honey tasting! (That’s what it’s all about folks! – The sticky stuff!) The sessions will take place 10am – 4:30pm. Cost $150. For more info and bookings call Creswick Neighbourhood Centre 5345 2356 or go to creswicknc.org.au

Xanadu…Xanaduuuuuu – now we are here…IN Xanaduuuuuu…! Oh we love an 80s musical. The blow-waves, the lycra, the rollerskates. Yes, Xanadu – the cult classic is on the stage now in Macedon. The Mount Players, (Macedon’s theatre company) are performing Xanadu until Saturday, June 4, at Mountview Theatre, 56 Smith Street Macedon. In case you haven’t had the pleasure of watching the cult flick… Xanadu is the tale of down-on-his-luck struggling artist Sonny and his chance meeting with beautiful Greek muse Kira, (who descends from the heavens from Mt Olympus to Venice Beach, California no less) to help Sonny realise his dream of creating the greatest artistic creation of all time... The Roller Disco. What could possibly go wrong?! We are certain you’ll have the songs in your head for a week. For more information and tickets go to themountplayers.com or call the box office 5426 1892.

THE Farmers’ Market is a goldmine for the freshest and most delicious produce grown and made locally. The Daylesford Farmers’ Market is held at Daylesford Primary School (102 Vincent St.) on the first Saturday of the month. Rug up and bring a big basket, (promise you’ll need a big one) then load it up! Try local honey and fresh pastries, (hot tip: look out for Annie Smithers’ jam donuts!) just picked fruit and veg, plants and olive oils, breads, meat, preserves, and all manner of the freshest and tastiest produce and treats. Meet the farmers and clever bakers and makers who grow and produce all this deliciousness. Talk to them about what they do, learn the provenance of what’s in your basket, then take it home and enjoy, knowing you’ve just handed over your hard-earned to a local farmer. It feels good all ‘round. (Especially if you score one of those jam donuts… OMG.) The market is on Saturday, June 4, in the morning.

The Humble Dairy Goat…a Supermarket on Four LegsGOATS are awesome. We’re a bit mad about them here in the Central Highlands. So much so that we even have a Goat Club (the Central Highlands Goat Club no less) to spruik and celebrate the wonders of these super animals.Sunday, June 5, Bullarto Primary School (at 131 South Bullarto Road) will host a Goat Masterclass with the Central Highlands Goat Club to showcase the awesomeness of the humble goat.Learn about the ‘Supermarket’ in a dairy goat. Not only do these cool creatures keep the weeds in your garden at bay, dairy goats produce some pretty marvellous milk. The Masterclass will teach you how to milk a dairy goat, how to separate the milk, churn butter, make icecream and soft cheese. (Ok… so we totally want a goat now.) Bullarto Primary School is a tiny little country school between Daylesford and Trentham. The students are immersed in a great curriculum and rural pursuits and are lucky enough to have their own goat stud, (the Bullarto Goatees)! The children and families care for the goats and gain so much knowledge about these quiet animals. Each year Bullarto PS holds a goat festival, and they’ve recognised that people love their goats as much as they do, and that we want more goaty info… So they have decided to host a special goat masterclass to share more of what they know. The goat masterclass will be held 10am – 3pm at the primary school.Tickets to the masterclass are $75 per person (includes a light lunch and tea and coffee). Proceeds from the event goes towards looking after the coolest goat herd in the Highlands. For bookings go to trybooking.com/KWWCFor more information contact Bullarto Primary School: 5348 5559.

Weeeee! Ahhhhh!It’s Fireworks Friday

The Performance NightTakes A BowWELL… the day has sadly, finally arrived… the final Performance Night at the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Rd Hepburn Springs) is immanent. For 16 years Performance Night has welcomed to the stage hundreds of locals, young and old, some amazing… some not so much, to play, sing, bongo, dance (or a combination of all of the above) and perform their hearts out to whoever was before them. Performance Night has launched a career or two, and has always been so warmly received by audiences, but alas it all must come to an end Sunday, June 10, from 2pm (‘til late). Book a spot on stage, or just come along and watch performers from years gone by and some fab new talent as well. Entry is free. For more information or to book a spot call Nel 0437 628 911, or the pub 5348 2207, or visit oldhepburnhotel.com.au

OTHER than dogs and toddlers there’s no one who doesn’t like fireworks. Here in the Central Highlands we’re a little far from the regular pyrotechnic blasts over Sydney Harbour, but we can totally hold our own over a footy field. Woodend Winter Arts Festival starts each year with a bang – quite literally – as they launch their wonderful festival with an opening night extravaganza at Buffalo Stadium (Forest Street, Woodend). Friday, June 10, lock up your puppies and make your way down there from 5:30pm, munch your way through the food stalls and dance to keep warm with music by Santa Taranta as well as great beats by drummers from Newham and Caulfield. The fireworks will light up the winter night sky from 6:30pm. This is a free event for all. For more information and the full Woodend Winter Arts Festival program go to woodendwinterartsfestival.org.au

Talkin’ all that JazzOn the Long WeekendTHERE’S a lot be said for living in a monarchy... but which ever way you lean you can’t deny the Queen’s Birthday public holiday is totally awesome. Here in Victoria it’s the last public holiday before Cup Day… (unless you count the new holiday on the Friday before the AFL grand final… which is more controversial than the monarchy, but we’ll totally take it). The Queen’s Birthday long weekend is a big one on the local calendar, with loads of great events to attend. The Castlemaine Jazz Festival is one such event, held Friday, June 10, ‘til Sunday, June 12. This year more than 100 jazz bands (that’s about 340 musos) will descend on Castlemaine to play a huge mix of jazz classics, swing, blues, Latin, mainstream, funk and modern as well as a few big bands thrown in to boot – across a myriad of venues, halls, pubs, street corners and even a train! Bands include loads of musical locals and popular faves from Melbourne and beyond. The Glass Moon from Melbourne were a big favourite last year with their pop-jazz style and are back at the Old Gaol Cell Block AND the Cumberland Hotel on Friday night. Super fun trio Bella Frisky promise to transport you to exotic locales around the world with their supercool tunes (these guys are really interesting – Kirsten Boerema is an amazing linguist and Michael Trimcke wrote his PhD on the saxophone solos of Kenny G – so ace). Big bands have amassed this year with the Maryborough Big Band, Big Band Frequency, High Society Jazz Orchestra, The Low Down Big Band, The Rathdowne Street Big Band, The Port Phillip Showband, the Dandenong Ranges Hot Jazz Orchestra and the Mountain Valley Jazz Band bringing some big volume to the festival. The program is bursting with gigs across the three days. It’s going to be amazing – high tail it to Castlemaine for a big jazz fix. For the full program, including venue locations, ticket details and more go to castlemainejazzfestival.com.au or like them on Facebook for up to the minute additions and deets: facebook.com/castlemainejazzfestival

Musical AlumniRaising Their Voices and Raising Funds

Hello Long WeekendHello Horvat’s Supper Club COASTAL art rockers Victoriana Gaye have not played in Daylesford for two years now, and in that time they’ve toured the UK and Europe, staying in the Le Cote de Basque area of France where they wrote most of their songs for their new album ‘Red Moon Ray’. (Ahh it’d be nice wouldn’t it?) They’ve been back in Australia for almost 12 months now, and have dragged themselves away from their sunny coastal life to take to the stage at the new Horvat’s Supper Club, (Shop 3, 22 Howe St, Daylesford) Friday, June 10. Their songs show off their broad musical nous – and unique sound: a bit of indie/folk/rock infused with jazz, psychedelia, and classic movie soundtracks. They’ve played around the world and they’ll be one of the first bands to take to the new Horvat’s stage. 7pm-10pm. Entry to the gig is free. For more info like Horvat’s on Facebook: (facebook.com/Horvats) or give them a buzz 0429 585 129.

THE community has rallied around Daylesford Secondary Collage after last summer’s devastating fire. Fundraisers have popped up everywhere, from trivia nights to car boot sales, hundreds of locals are doing their bit to help the school purchase new items to replace those lost in the fire. Friday, June 10, 7pm-10pm the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn) welcomes back some of DSC’s brightest (and most musical) alumni to play a special benefit gig. There will be live performances by Melbourne’s newest girl band Team Love, the three piece The Backs, and a solo set by Oli Dear. Plus witness the explosive debut from Korweinguboora’s finest exports Spray On Pants (winner of best band name everrrr we think). The music will be amazing and it’s all for a good cause so dig deep. Tickets are $10 – all proceeds go to the school. For more info go to oldhepburnhotel.com.au or call 5348 2207.

Woodend WinterArts FestivalTHE much-loved Woodend Winter Arts Festival is held over four days across the Queen’s Birthday Long weekend, this year: Friday, June 10, ‘til Monday, June 13. The 2016 program features a wealth of incredible world class performers, art shows, writers’ talks and panel discussions, plays and incredible classical and contemporary musical performances. This year the program has a distinct Italian flavour, with critically acclaimed Italian accordionist Pietro Roffi arriving in Australia for an exclusive performance at the WWAF. Pietro is on his world tour, which includes Romania, Chile, England, South Africa and yes, Woodend. Festival Artistic Director Dr. Jacqueline Ogeil will present two world premiere performances on a copy of the very first piano ever made, as invented by Cristofori - a specially commissioned instrument - seven years in the making! It is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Dr. Ogeil will perform a series of complicated pieces from the early 1700s by Scarlatti.Just a couple of weeks out from the federal election WWAF welcomes Laurie Oakes and Sally Warhaft to muse on Laurie’s five decade career reporting on Australian politics, (juicy!) and John Brumby will be joined by writers Joel Deane and Michael Bachelard to discuss the world of Victorian politics. Classical music lovers you’re in for a treat: the festival program is jam packed with some of Australia’s best classical artists performing concerts of Bach, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Bach, Schubert and more, and Singaporean pianist Clarence Lee will fly in especially to perform at WWAF. The visual arts are well represented with art shows and demonstrations, as well as an exhibition of wood engravings by Tim Jones, whose works have been exhibited in every major public gallery in Australia and in the British Museum. Tim will be demonstrating his technique across the weekend. Clear your diary for the long weekend, it’s all about the WWAF! For all the details and the full program (including ticket sales) go to: woodendwinterartsfestival.org.au

The Cartwheels have been invited to play the Tamworth Country Music Festival and the Gympie Muster, and have brought their energetic blend of country, rockabilly, and rock ‘n’ roll to thousands around the country. The Cartwheels will play Horvat’s Supper Club (3/22 Howe Street, Daylesford) on the 11th from 7-10pm. Entry is free. The Annual Beer Dinner

Trim Your TreesIf You PleaseRIGHT now in your backyard your fruit trees are having a little kip. They’re resting up after their bumper crop of apples, or pears, or cherries or nectarines, or whatever deliciousness they provided for you last summer, and they’re taking a well earned break. Good on them. While your fruit trees are having a little slumber party it’s a great time to give them a trim. The Diggers Club at the Garden of St Erth (189 Simmons Reef Rd. Blackwood) is hosting a Winter Fruit Tree Pruning session, to show you all the tips and tricks to get the most out of your fruit trees next summer. Learn different techniques for different trees, how best to shape them, and how to maintain the best size and maximum crop. This workshop will be held Sunday, June 26, at 11am-12:30pm. Cost: $29 for Diggers members, ($39 non-members). More info and bookings call the shop at the Garden of St Erth: 5368 6514, or go to diggers.com.au

So Much More Than Pots and Pints SURE we have a few fancy menus in this region. Many of them include local wines matched to all manner of plates from entrées to desserts. Once a year The Plough in Trentham (31 High Street) does something a little different… They match their menu to beer. The Annual Beer Dinner will be held Saturday, June 25, from 6:30pm. Boutique James Squire beers will be paired across a sumptuous five course dinner. The beers will compliment the different courses and open your eyes (and taste buds) to the subtleties of flavour and the awesomeness of craft beers. These beers go well beyond a traditional pub pot or pint, you’ll be totally impressed with how well they work with each course.Dinner is $80pp and bookings are essential. For more information call The Plough 5424 1144 or go to theplough.com.au

Daylesford Kids…Get Into The Great IndoorsEVERY single parent in the entire Hepburn Shire has at one point thought – I should start an indoor play centre in Daylesford… it’d be brilliant! Well guess what… it has happened folks… and it’s awesome! DayKids Playhouse Café at warehouse 8/39 East Street is now open… and boy Steph and Adam have done a great job. (Bravo!)The play space is perfect for the littlest littlies to the big kids at heart, its big pink slide (near vertical) (eek!) is a magnet for any thrill-seeking kid or parent (OR parent who has to hold the thrill seeking kid’s hand. Yikes!) Parents are well catered for with great coffee (yes!! It’s true!) and a fab café menu (unlike traditional play centres where you’d prefer to BYO food). They even have WiFi… Hello! …y’know, so you can upload that video of yourself going down the pink slide. (You will so do this… if you are nuts enough to attempt the pink slide you will want to show the world.)DayKids Playhouse Café also caters for kids’ birthday parties with a range of packages available for up to 12 kids. (So brilliant for families with winter birthdays!) The party space is inviting and tasteful (with no hypercolour fairy and pirate rooms in sight). The woodland themed party room has logs for seats, greenery and fairy lights hanging from the roof, and black walls (so totally gorgeous) you’ll want to Instagram the bejeebers out of it (hello to that WiFi again). The play space is compact and close to the café seating so you can keep one eye on your little one, and one eye on your book/phone/latte/knitting/other-parent-friend-you-brought-along-for-company-so-you-don’t-have-to-go-down-the-pink-slide. DayKids is open Tuesday to Thursday 9:30am – 4:30pm, Friday to Sunday 10am - 5pm. Admission is $8.50 for kids over 1 year old. The play centre structure is perfect for kids aged 12 and under. Parents can play for free! For more info, (including party packages) go to daykids.com.au or call 5348 4600. Like them on Facey for up to the minute info: facebook.com/daylesfordkids
