It’s March! It’s time to CHILL OUT! HAPPY ChillOut everyone!! Boy we just love this time of year! Incase you’re new to town, visiting for the first time, or have been living under a particularly large rock, Daylesford and surrounds plays host to the largest regional GLBTIQ event in the southern hemisphere (!! it’s true!) each long weekend in March. From its simple roots as a quiet retreat for a gathering of friends, (- the yin to Sydney’s amazing Mardi Gras yang -) ChillOut has grown into something equally as fabulous (and ‘almost’ as massive) in its own right. Now in its 18th year, ChillOut will be held across four huge days Friday, March 6 ‘til Monday, March 9. (Milk that long weekend!)ChillOut is a festival of Queer Country Pride, with a jam-packed program of music, dance parties, arts, comedy, forums, film, food, sport, the brilliant Carnival Day (Sunday) and (of course) a super fun street parade (Vincent Street Sunday 10am for a 10:30 start). Each year ChillOut raises funds for an important community initiative. This year the Roz Moynihan Worthy Cause is the Victoria Park community hub. (So dig deep folks!)The ChillOut program includes the famous ChillOut Bush Dance (more info page 4) the ChillOut dance party (held Sunday, March 8, 8pm – 3am – yes that says THREE AM oooh late night for this sleepy town) and Bluehouse are ‘getting the band back together’ to play the Daylesford Town Hall Friday, March 6, (um, hello, awesome.) Saturday, take in a bit of feisty Roller Derby, bush walking, golf, bands, dancing, parties, comedy and cabaret, Sunday; more yoga, tunes, the Parade and Carnival day and make sure you squeeze in some serious chilling out at the Hepburn Bathhouse and fabulous day spas of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. The big and glossy ChillOut program is all over town (look for lovely Larry the Cow on the cover). Or go to chilloutfestival.com.au to book tickets and check event details. Mr. & Ms. Uncoget up and danceTHEY say that anyone can dance… Sure, not everyone can dance like a hyper-sequined dancesport hero, or a Russian ballerina, or a contortionist breakdancer, but it is certainly true that everyone can move to music, whether or not you’d be prepared to do it publicly is another story. NLNL (No Lights No Lycra) is a dance event taking the world by storm. Developed by Melbourne dance students Alice Glenn and Heidi Barrett, NLNL events are now happening across the globe from Berlin, to Shanghai, to Warrandyte. At NLNL Everyone is invited (Yes you Ms. Unco) to dance freely in a darkened room, to big tunes wearing comfy clothes. Move to the music as you feel is right, be yourself, enjoy the lack of judgment as you bust out your best Beyonce (no one will know) or let loose on a mad 80s robot. The next NLNL event will be held at Trentham Neighbourhood Centre, Saturday, March 7, 7-8pm. Cost $5. More info at nolightsnolycra.com

A fletcher, a cordwainer and a horologist walk into a bar…WE live in an age where anything and everything is easily accessible. Mass production is the norm. STUFF is churned out by invisible distant factories and we don’t even have to get off the couch to receive this ‘stuff’. (OK, so, we have to get off the couch to open the door to the courier guy... it’s tough.) But just a few generations ago this ‘convenience’ would be an unimaginable – and bit weird - future. In this age of ease it is comforting to know that there is a groundswell and resurgence of ‘Lost Trades’. Independent artisans creating and crafting beautiful items using the techniques of old - by hand. Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8, the Lost Trades Fair will be held at Kyneton Racecourse 10am – 4pm. The Lost Trades Fair supports rare, forgotten and traditional trades and those who practice them. Meet dozens of inspiring and skilled artisans, creating works of great beauty. Bern Chandley will be there with his handmade heirloom Windsor chairs. Ruth Allen will share her passion for the ancient art of glass blowing combined with her contemporary sustainable practices. Meet Bruce Jackson a master gilder. He practices the lost art of ‘verre églomisé – that is applying gold leaf to glass. His work is commissioned all over the world. Meet Andrew McGregor, a Fletcher by trade (arrow maker), meet Sharron Taylor the whip maker, Pete Murphy the Luthier (stringed instrument maker), and Duncan McHarg the Cordwainer (look him up, amazing). Meet saddlers and tool makers and blacksmiths and coopers and spoon smiths and spinners and basket weavers even a horologist… and so many more highly skilled experts in their (lost) trade. The festival will showcase over 80 Lost Trades artisans displaying and demonstrating their products and skills. It will be a fascinating and inspiring day out. Entry: $10 adult, $5 kids (5-15years), family passes $25. A shuttle bus will run from Kyneton Station directly to the fair. Practicesome me timeME time. What’s that we hear you ask? Here’s a hint… it ain’t the solitary time you spend with your phone in the queue at the checkout. True me-time involves your trusty bathtub, some steaming water, some low tunes (if that floats your boat), and a little-something in the water to help soothe away the ‘stuff’. And we’ve all got ‘stuff’… Work stuff, family stuff, money stuff, the little daily stresses that snowball into Big Stuff. The best way to ease the pressure of ALL this stuff is to focus within for while with a bit of precious me time, and soak it out in your tub. Ahhh… It’s relaxing just thinking about it.Local gal Bree Melotte and partner Michael Bain have founded Iris Practice to create and sell their own divine range of health and wellbeing products made here in Daylesford. Bree is a qualified Naturopath and has created a delicious range of botanical and mineral bath soaks to help ease away your stuff and relax, revive, detox and soothe your precious bod. Iris Practice source the highest quality local herbs and botanicals and oils where they can, as well as ethically harvested salts to produce their premium quality bath soaks. The range includes soaks to ease tired muscles, grounding soaks, soaks to detoxify, uplift and nurture, soaks for mamas, goddesses, blokes and lovers… All so luscious and lovely, chock-full of the good stuff, no nasties at all. These blends are created with love and passion (secret ingredients) and (we’re sure) just a touch of magic. (Wishing this wee magazine was scratch and sniff right now so you could smell how good they are, hellooo… amazing!) Bree is practicing Naturopathy at Gisborne Health and will be setting up shop in Daylesford soon! Yay! For a naturopathy consultation call Bree 0422 123 433. Iris Practice soaks are available from Hepburn Bathhouse. The full range is online at irispractice.com (which means you can totally order them on your phone when you’re next having some ‘me time’ in the queue at the checkout).

The Distancebetween you and meVAUGHAN is a dot on the map. A teeeeeny dot. Back in its heyday in the gold rush boom, Vaughan was a township of more than 20,000 people. There are hints and reminders all over the area that this was once the case. The region is saturated in history, much of it now hidden from view. Kick the dirt and you’ll turn over a fragment of blue and white china, an old mineral water bottle, or there are other - more obvious - treasures to be found too… LIKE THE GIANT SLIDE (Ok, so that’s a relatively modern addition… but it is soooo ace). Jessie Stanley is a Vaughan based artist. She has designed a series of interactive and contemporary sculptural artworks placed throughout the historic township and Vaughan mineral springs area. This work is entitled The Distance Between You and Me, and will be launched as part of the Castlemaine State Festival. Take an audio tour of the works, and follow the story of two of the iconic figures of Vaughan’s gold rush past. These artworks take the audience on a journey not only through the historic area, but you’ll also explore the universal themes of life-cycle, heritage and legacy. Before you hit the region, download the audio tour from Jessiestanley.com, then head to the Vaughan Springs Kiosk, and pick up a limited edition print as your guide to the exhibition. The Distance Between You and Me will run daily, Friday, March 13, until Sunday, March 22. Open 10am – 4pm. Vaughan Springs is within the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park. (Enter via Greville Street, Vaughan.) Allow yourself 90 minutes for the tour. Admission is free. For more information and to see some more of Jessie’s work go to jessiestanley.com or visit castlemainestatefestival.com.au

Bread, Beer,and Balderdash

TerrariumA botanic garden in your lounge room OH to be a gardener… A Proper Gardener. Oh to walk outside and stroll your lovingly tended grounds, plucking the fruits and flowers of your labour with pride in your heart, instead of the deep shame of a weedy, dusty, yard - strewn with the plastic pots of forgotten potential. Never fear wannabe green-thumbs - the answer could be a terrarium. A perfect miniature garden you can keep an eye on from the comfort of your couch. Tuesday, March 17, Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19-21 Victoria Street) is hosting an evening of terrarium building (6pm-9pm). Discover the artistry and skills you need to build your own. BYO interesting bits to add to your mini garden, (pebbles, shells, statues, figurines etc) and a container you’d like to use (or you can buy all these things on the night) Cost $50. For more info and bookings call 5345 2356 or go to creswicknc.org.au

YOU know that old saying “You learn something new every day?” – well this is the new thing you’re about to learn… Balderdash originally referred to a mix of fermented liquors. (We always thought that Balderdash was a fancy way of calling someone out… highlighted in the 1980s board game of the same name…. but noooo…) The boys at RedBeard Bakery (38A High St. Trentham) are mad about a bit of fermentation – that’s what makes their sour dough so outstanding. As part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, they are hosting a fun (and delicious) evening of Bread, Beer and Balderdash, Saturday, March 14. Meet fermentation masters, expert local brewers and picklers and discover the ancient art of fermentation, and why these delicious old ideas are being revived for modern times. The event runs 7:30pm-10:30pm. Cost $75. For more info and tickets go to http://www.melbournefoodandwine.com.au

A taste of Spainjust down the road

Nothing standardabout this jazz trioTOM VINCENT is one of Australia’s leading jazz musicians. He has performed to rave reviews around the globe and has lived in New York, Amsterdam and France. Now Tom and his grand piano live in Tassie, where the phone still rings hot for festivals and international gigs. Tom and band are about to hit the road again, this time on their Australian tour to showcase the new album Night Sessions. The Tom Vincent Trio (Including Leigh Barker and Alf Jackson) are a tight ensemble, producing some crazy good improv on classic jazz standards. The Grande is putting on a two course dinner and the Tom Vincent Trio show for $85. Sweet. For more info go to tomvincent.com.au. To book call The Grande Hotel: 5348 1978.

NOW, we’re not exactly geographic whizz-kids here at Lost, but we figure Sailors Falls (just down the road from Daylesford) is a very long way from Spain. Sault Restaurant, nestled in the lavender at 2349 Ballan-Daylesford Road, Sailors Falls, is home to the very talented chef, Santiago Nine-Fernandez, who is also a very long way from his home turf of Galicia, Spain. Santiago creates delicious fine fare for Sault guests with a distinctive Spanish twist, and Friday, March 20, Santiago will unleash his heritage in a very special evening, as he recreates the fine food of Galicia. Santiago will take guests on a culinary journey, spending time with everyone, sharing his passion and knowledge of the food and the region. Sample the menu at sault.com.au. Cost: $120 pp. (Includes a complimentary glass of wine on arrival.) For more information and bookings call Sault 5348 6555, or fill the online booking form at sault.com.au

Peace, love, kindness and facepaintingDAYLESFORD Dharma School is a unique school in Australia, and one of only three of its kind in the world. The school offers a curriculum based on Buddhist principles and the school community (and the kids) are thriving. Each year Daylesford Dharma School hosts an Autumn Fair. The fair is a chance to celebrate the kids and the school, and to give the community a taste of what Dharma School is all about. This year the Autumn Fair will be held on Sunday, March 22, 11am-3pm. The Fair will be held at the school (11 Perrins Street, Daylesford) and promises to be loads of fun.The theme for this year’s fair is Celebrating Children’s Creativity and Earth Connectivity. The day will feature activities and stalls encouraging the children to create new and special things from recycled items, including knitting and woolcraft, upcycled gardening - using beautiful pre-loved bits and bobs like old tea cups and colanders for planting seedlings, there’ll be a community canvas mandala, and a huge cardboard box construction site.As with all great school fairs there’ll also be face painting, homemade treats, a circus workshop, hula hooping, comedy and puppets. There will be a focus on the school’s connection to the earth, with sustainable gardening demos, including how to build a no-dig garden.Dharma School Fair will offer raw vegan treats for sale, their famous Chai tea, cakes (love a school fair cake) and the most delish range of vegan food for lunch. There will be workshops demonstrating how to make vegan brownies (oh so delish) and vegan cheese from scratch. Local musos will be playing up a storm and some of the school’s music students will be out there busking as well.Everyone is invited to join in this happy family day. Entry is by gold coin donation. Parking is limited, so your best option (for the planet) is to jump on your bike or walk. For more info go to dharmaschool.com.au or for the latest updates like facebook.com/DaylesfordDharmaSchool

Da Ya Think I’ma bit in love with Rod Stewart?

World musica world away from it allWE hate goodbyes. So when Summer turned her back and walked slowly away at the end of February, we admit, we shed a tear. Luckily Autumn is here to cheer us up, she’s always beautiful to have around. It usually takes a while for Autumn to do what she does best, but the leaves will start to turn soon and when they do there’s no better place to be than Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, Daylesford. Saturday, March 28, at Wombat Hill House Café, Salvatore Rossano and Hayley Egan will perform a mix of traditional and original Italian, European and South American music on accordion, guitar and charango, 12:30-3:30pm. Sitting outdoors in the courtyard with the Autumn sky, some fabulous live world music playing and a cheeky local Prosecco in hand, there’s pretty much no place we’d rather be. Wombat Hill House is atop Wombat Hill. Enter via Central Springs Road. For more info call the café 4373 0099.

YOU have to admire a man with a four decade commitment to a hair style and tight pants. Rod Stewart is one such bloke with one such mane and one mighty collection of tight pants. He also happens to be an international superstar who has managed to imprint multiple songs into your subconscious… There’s no use denying it… you know waaay more Rod Stewart lyrics than you care to admit, and you’ve turned up the radio and belted out a bit of Young Turks (“young hearts beat free tonight dah dah dah dahhh dah dah dah daaah”) whilst driving, and you know ALL the words to Da Ya Think I’m Sexy and Maggie May and SAILING – hello… iconic! OK you’re actually a MASSIVE Rod Stewart fan, it’s ok, embrace it, own it. Mullet up we say. You can see the man himself this month when he brings The Hits show to Hanging Rock, Saturday, March 28. GA tickets are priced from $131.10 + booking fee. More info at frontiertouring.com

Taking The Waters(don’t mind if we do...)OUR region has an interesting history. Of course we all know about the gold rush years, where every stone was turned in the mad dash for fortune. But somewhere along the way, the Hepburn Springs mineral springs area was saved, by an inspired group of locals that saw the wealth of mineral water as being of greater value than gold. (Oh we are sooo grateful to them.) 150 years later we celebrate the anniversary of the Hepburn Springs Mineral Reserve being handed back to the community. The Taking The Waters event is a community celebration, to be held Saturday, March 28, at Hepburn Springs Mineral Reserve, 1pm – 5pm. The reserve boasts numerous pumps (they all taste a bit different, BYO glass to sample them all!) Bring a picnic and family and friends for a day of fun in the shade of the giant trees. There will be some fantastic live music all afternoon from the sound shell – with Golden Guitar winning locals The Cartwheels, as well as the Cider House String Band, The Daylesford Community Brass Band and Ari and Rhiannon playing live. From 7pm ‘til 11pm an Old Time dance will be held at the beautiful historic Hepburn Pavilion Building. This evening of old time dancing will take you back to the days of old, when dances were regularly held at the Hepburn Pavilion. Take a spin on the beautiful tessellated tiled floor to the jitterbug, the foxtrot, and waltz the evening away. (You’re also welcome just to sit and reminisce if your fox trot is a little rusty.) Supper and drinks will be available. (Not just mineral water – we promise!)Everyone is invited to ‘Take the Waters’, and come and celebrate the 150th anniversary, and share in the mineral springs that have drawn so many people to this region for so many years. This is a free community event. For more information look up Friends of the Hepburn Mineral Springs reserve on Facebook or join the Facebook event ‘Taking The Waters’ Community Celebration Day.

153 years old…and still loves a festival

Overwroughtthe fuss about rustDAYLESFORD’S metal art studio and gallery - Overwrought, has moved! Aaahh! No tears now… it’s ok… Overwrought has just moved eight minutes up the road to Blampied, to bigger and better premises at 3409 Midland Hwy (sort of diagonally opposite the Swiss Mountain Hotel). (Yay!) David’s signature works of rusty, sculptural wrought iron can be found adorning many homes and businesses throughout the shire (and indeed around the country). His pieces include gates, screens, firepits, wall art, and everything from tiny garden stakes to grand garden sculptures. The move sees David and his team in a huge new workshop with an enormous outdoor sculpture garden and gallery, which will grow as they fill it with new work. Visit Overwrought and buy a piece of art for your garden or have David design one especially for your space. They’re open 9 ‘til 5 daily. More info at overwrought.com.au.

ANDERSON’S Mill is an historic, five storey, bluestone flour mill, built in the 1860s on the banks of Birch’s Creek Smeaton. The Mill stands as a reminder of the successful grain industry that took off after the gold rush. Back in the day Anderson’s Mill was powered by a giant iron water wheel, it processed thousands of tonnes of wheat and oats and still stands – pretty much - as it did over 150 years ago. For 21 years a festival has been held in its honour (how many flour mills can say that huh?) This year, The Anderson’s Mill Festival will be held Sunday, March 29. The festival is a celebration of fine local food and wine, fantastic live bands, arts and crafts and heritage. Sample and buy delicious local fare, watch demos and take a tour of the mill at 11am, 12:30pm, and 2pm with a local historian. For more info go to andersonsmillfest.org.au. (Note: no dogs are permitted within the mill grounds.) Entry 10am – 4:30pm.
