Pastor’s Letter January 4/5 Dear Parish Family, Today is a feast called the Epiphany. Some call it little Christmas and it is also known as the visit of the Magi. The literal meaning of epiphany is manifestation. In the gospel of Matthew the birth of Jesus happens quietly and secretly with only angels and lowly shepherds as witnesses. It is only later when people see and believe and then announce what they have seen to everyone — to the world. Another good way to think about the Epiphany is that it is the difference between theoretical and real. Theoretically God is everywhere in the universe but moments where this presence becomes visible are crucially important to us. No one is much enlivened by a theoretical presence of God. It is only when God’s presence becomes real that we can connect with our God and believe. This is also why evil in the world is so terrifying. It seems to contradict the whole idea of God and makes belief difficult. You can see why it is so important for believers not only to talk about God but to reveal God in the good that they do. So Epiphany is also about the work of Christmas. What you and I do to reveal the presence of God. As a community we do this in our ministries. It is theory to describe a church as God’s house or the place where God lives. It is reality as a church to serve people in all of our ministries and to make the church a place of warmth and welcome. Individually each of us has the opportunity to let God’s presence in us be more than theoretical. The birth of Christ into the world means that God is present in every human being. It is not earned. It comes along with being human because God creates our humanity to receive Christ. There is a wonderful prayer in the mass which asks God to “see and love in us what you see and love in Christ.” God is in every person but some people allow God to be more visible, to be manifest, to be real. I say allow because there is really nothing special that you need to do other than to get our of the way and let god happen. Generous people stop worrying about what they have and think about what the can do. Kind people stop thinking about what is wrong in people and think about what is good. Compassionate people stop thinking about who will love them in their need and focus on being with others in their need. So theoretically God is present in you. I bet you believe that. Your mission, the mission of every Christian, is to let the God life in us become visible. Jesus said it this way: “Let your light shine!” On this feast of the Epiphany may our God be made visible in you! Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

The focus of our trip will be on learning, faith, and friendship. Stay tuned for more information or if you would like to help with the planning please contact Fr. Mike at [email protected] The trip will be open to HS and college students but we are also hoping to have a good number of parents and other adults as helpers and chaperones.

Thanks to all those who

made Christmas Beautiful! Christmas was so especially beautiful here at SHJM and I want to say a special word of thanks to all who made it so. To Pam Culver who decorated our church and altar, and who along with Bill and Jose in our maintenance department made everything so perfect this year. To Jim Frankenbach who once again lit our beautiful trees and made our church so welcoming with their light. To all of you who gave so generously to our Christmas Flower collection. And of course to all our ministers. To Jo Ann Morse for directing our choirs and Jack Hanlon for coordinating our ministers. To our lectors, Eucharistic ministers, Altar Servers, Ushers, Cantors, Singers, Presiders, Deacons — you brought such great joy to all God’s people!

La Epifanía del Señor, Año ABC. Ilustración © 2001 S. Erspamer. Printed from www.

By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Today's Liturgy 2014

By María Dolores Martínez from Liturgia y Canción 2008 © 2007, OCP. All rights reserved.
