January 5, 2020 The Epiphany of the Lord
They opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. — Matthew 2:11b
Salvat ion in Daily Life Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Nativity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ coming as the long-awaited king and Messiah of the Jewish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revelation that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all nations—Jews, Gentiles, and all people.
The star shines so brightly that it attracts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The letter to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the world was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all people into the light of his love. The reading from Isaiah also describes a gathering of diverse peoples, but this time it is to the light that emanates from the people of God.

**SUNDAY MASS TIME CHANGING**
Effective January 5, 2020, the first Mass on Sunday will be at 8:00am, changing from the current 8:30am. All the other Mass times remain the same. The reason for this change, which was discussed with the parish Pastoral Council and the parish staff, is to create a block of time on Sunday morning (9:00 to 10:15am) that can be used for various events and activities. People can attend 8:00am Mass and then participate in the activity or attend 10:30am Mass after the activity. Faith and Families which previously was on Sunday nights, will now be in this block of time and will include breakfast. There will be the opportunity for adult education, such as Bible study and others, during this time. We have discovered that it is a challenge for individuals and for families to attend activities on weeknights because of busy schedules and other commitments, especially during the school year. It is our hope that creating this time will afford many others the opportunity to participate in the various social and educational offerings of the parish. We know that for some, the change will be a hardship. Hopefully, overall this new schedule will help our parish community.

First Reading A reading from the Book of Isaiah
Isaiah 60:1—6
Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shin-ing radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses.
Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and pro-claiming the praises of the LORD.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Order of the Mass — January 5, 2020 The Epiphany of the Lord

Second Reading
A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians Ephesians 3:2—3a, 5—6
Brothers and sisters: You have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for your benefit, namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation. It was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Gospel Matthew 2:1—12 The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Glory to you, O Lord.
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet:
And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come
a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.” After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankinense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstan-tial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was Incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. 5

GRANDPARENTS’ DAY: On Sunday, January 26, St. Pius X Catholic School will honor our grandparents at the 8:00AM and 10:30AM Masses. Following these Masses, grandparents can join us for refreshments and the book fair in the Fr. A.T. Screen Gymnasium.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR: St. Pius X School will host the Scholastic Book Fair in the gymnasium beginning Sunday, January 26 after the 8:00AM and 10:30AM Masses in conjunction with Grandparents Day. The Scholastic Book Fair will continue each day during school hours through Friday, January 31. PEACE PRAYER WALK: On Tuesday, January 28, St. Pius X Parish will host a Peace Walk, which is sponsored by Catholic Charities. The event will consist of less than a 1mile walk through the neighborhood with a few stops along the way to say brief prayers for peace. It is intended to be a visual representation of peacemakers in our community. The St. Pius X CYO will provide refreshments at the conclusion of the Peace Walk. Check the bulletin for more details as the walk approaches.
Prayer for Priests: The ministry offers prayers for individual priests, as a sign of solidarity with the Priesthood. This entails the commitment of one hour each month, when possible before the Blessed Sacrament, for the intentions of the priest. Also, through prayer, it supports the development of vocations. If you are currently scheduled in the Adoration Chapel and not part of this ministry, we invite you consider joining it. More information about the ministry or sign-up is available in the Adoration Chapel. You may also call Linda and Terry Walsh at 504-288-4061.
Lord, Teach Me to Pray: Lord, Teach Me to Pray (LTMTP) is an Ignatian prayer series designed to meet the desire for on-going spiritual growth, offering opportunity to respond to the call to holiness, and to develop a deeper commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord. In facilitated faith-sharing prayer communities, the Lord, himself, teaches us to pray. Part 1 of LTMTP meets once a week for 12 weeks. LTMTP Part 1 for Women will meet on Mondays starting January 27 at 10:30am and LTMTP Part 1 for Women and Men will meet on Sundays at 9:30am starting January 26. Please call Carol Weiler to
register, 504-439-5933.

You can participate in one or both, $5 each, no commitment. Singles are welcome. We're having fun, not training for a dance competition, lack of dance aptitude isn't a problem.
