Wide-awake eyes WHEN MEGHAN WED her Prince Charming back in May, a combination of chocolate eyeliner and glossy black lashes gave her an adorably doe-eyed look. But had she rolled out of bed that way? Of course not. She’d expertly made the most of her natural beauty with long, curled lashes. Here are some ways to get that youthful look… Lash extensions last up to three weeks. All you’ll need to add is a smudge of liner to ramp up the glam for parties. Try Nouveau Lashes SVS (Speed, Volume, Style), which creates a soft, full flutter from £55. Find a salon at nouveaulashes.com/salon-finder. A lash perm If you already have long lashes, this curls them and adds a tint to make them more visible. Try the GLD Lash Lift at The Eyelash Emporium in Superdrug stores, from £20, which lasts for around six weeks. Falsies Meghan’s make-up artist, Daniel Martin, applied individual false lashes to the outer corners of her eyes only, for a more believable flutter on her wedding day. Don’t believe the hype about the return of the skinny brow – it’s a high-fashion look that suits very few of us (and plucking your brows away can mean they never grow back properly). How far you’re prepared to groom depends on your brows and your budget… A professional tint and shape works miracles if your brows are simply faded. Threading costs from £18 and tinting from £14 at Shavata Brow Bars (shavata.co.uk) in department stores. Microblading can help if brows are sparse and patchy. An anaesthetic cream is applied, then tiny scratches are made along the brow to mimic the look of hairs. A plant-based tint (not a tattoo ink) is applied to the scratches. The result is a fuller brow that looks natural and lasts up to 18 months. I had mine done by top specialist Sian Dellar (permanentmakeup- specialist.com) and couldn’t be more pleased. It’s pricey – around £500 – but annual top-ups are often less than half the initial price, so pick your practitioner carefully. A tinted brow gel or fine pencil can be used to create tiny hair strokes – blend them by brushing brows upwards with an old mascara wand. To keep the look natural, brow guru Shavata Singh says you should never add colour right next to the lower line of the brow. Instead, begin applying it a few millimetres up where the hairs are thicker, and avoid reddish tints. Try Eylure Brow Paint (pictured, left). CHRISTMAS GLAMOUR used to mean heavy make-up, elaborate hairstyles and plenty of glitz. But these days it’s more on trend to go for a healthy, natural look, which means clear, dewy skin and enhancing what nature gave you. It’s not about ditching your make-up, though – when we’re feeling tired, nature needs a helping hand if we want to get that polished look, and that’s where clever products, flattering shades and expert application come in. Smoochy lips WHO DOESN’T WANT PLUMP, SMOOTH lips to pucker up under the mistletoe? WINTER SHOULDN’T STOP YOU baring a little skin. Smooth, bare legs with strappy sandals, a shoulder or back-baring top, or ankle-exposing cropped trousers make great party looks. But you’ll want to be sure the skin on show looks smooth and gleaming!

Start with an exfoliating mitt in the shower, followed up with a rich body cream. Finish with a body oil for a really glossy look. AT-HOME TIP Try a wash-off body cream with a tint and a hint of radiance. These don’t streak and they don’t have that giveaway biscuit-y smell of old-school fake tan. The best bit? They smooth over any imperfections such as visible veins, so you feel confident.

Body boosters

WORK, FAMILY LIFE AND SOCIALISING can take their toll on men’s grooming, too. A little extra attention before the season gets fully under way is all it takes to restore the balance.

Moisturise skinTo combat winter skin and give it a party freshness, add a restoring moisturiser to your routine.

Tame rogue hairsAttention to detail is essential for a smart, youthful look. Ear and nose hair should be trimmed neatly, and brows look best if there are two of them rather than a monobrow… Use a wax strip, shave or simply tweeze away hairs between your brows, then trim with Tweezerman Facial Hair Scissors, £21, Boots.

Groom on the moveFor men whose beards grow fast, heading out to a party from work presents a dilemma. If you like a smooth face, bring a battery-powered razor to work. Even if you normally wet shave, these lightweight gadgets make a really effective interim solution.

A GEL NAIL TREATMENT, such as Shellac, will see you through three weeks of parties, but they can be hard on nails when it comes to removal. Insist your nail tech allows plenty of time for the polish to lift off naturally. A wooden stick should be all that’s needed to coax it off the nail. Never let them use metal tools or – horror! – a nail sander. Alternatively, pick a more temporary nail polish that will care for your nails. AT-HOME TIP Apply an oil every day to keep nails strong, even if you’re wearing polish. Any oil you have handy will do – even sunflower oil from the kitchen.

IF A LONG, HOT SUMMER followed by central heating dryness and drizzly damp has left your hair faded, frail and frizzy, it’s time to give it back its mojo… For thick, healthy locks, look for products that strengthen the very core of each strand. Olaplex technology in salons has been a game changer. Instead of merely infusing hair with moisture, it rebuilds the broken protein bonds. Now there’s a take-home version: Olaplex Hair Perfector No.3, £18.55/100ml, allbeauty.com, is ideal as a once-a-week mask. Kim Kardashian sleeps in hers, apparently.Add a little bling to take an everyday hairstyle up a few notches. You could seek out sparkling hair accessories or go stylish with a vintage brooch or necklace from a charity shop woven into your hair for a touch of glamour.AT-HOME TIP Create a low bun for a sophisticated look. Spritz a lightweight hair spray on to dry hair, then gently backcomb the roots for volume. Make a loose ponytail at the nape of your neck, then divide it into two sections. Twist each all the way down its length, then wrap the twists and pin to form a bun.

Fast facialCOLDER DAYS AND CENTRAL HEATING can make skin drier, flakier and more prone to redness. One good antidote is a sheet mask – the huge beauty trend inspired by the Korean love of both novelty and perfect skin. A mask makes for perfect festive party prep because as well as giving your skin a boost, you get a guaranteed 20 minutes to yourself. Make-up artist Daniel Martin recommends the ultra-hydrating Deep Moisture Mask from Clark’s Botanicals (£58, spacenk.com), which he used on Meghan Markle.

AT-HOME TIP Facialist Abigail James suggests giving your skin a massage for a natural glow and lift. Apply a tiny amount of oil to your hands, then use your fingertips to tap skin all over. After this, push up your skin all over using firm, upward pressure, working into the muscles of your cheeks, under the brows and at the temples. HOWEVER PRACTISED YOU ARE, it’s easy to get cuts, ingrown hairs and spots. We asked the experts at Gillette how to perfect your technique

Shiny hair

Perfect nailsThe art of a close shave...

1 HYDRATE This softens hair, allowing the razor to glide along

the skin, and minimises nicks, cuts and irritation. Use a face wash (not bar soap) to remove oil, dirt and dead skin. Then, ideally, shave after (or even in) your shower.

2 CHOOSE A GEL, such as Gillette Fusion Proglide 2-in-1

Ocean Breeze Sensitive Shave Gel, £4.99/170ml Boots, that’s protective. Lather it up well, working it into the beard. This will soften tough hairs, protect you from rashes and bumps, and improve razor glide.

3 KEEP YOUR BLADE SHARP If the lubrication strips look

worn or the blades feel dull, replace your razor cartridge.

4 USE GENTLE, light strokes – let your razor do the work.

Ideally, the blades should be able to pivot to adapt to the contours of your face.

5 RINSE YOUR BLADES often to remove hairs and foam.

Never shave without shaving gel or cream or over-shave the same spot, as this can irritate your skin.

6 SHAVE IN ANY DIRECTION that feels comfortable. Facial

hairs actually grow in many directions, so use a multi-blade razor rather than worrying about shaving with or against the direction of growth.

7 CREATE an edge for sideburns with a precision trimmer –

this will also help you reach tricky places, such as the skin under your nose. You’ll find a trimmer on the back of the Gillette Fusion5 Proshield Razor, from £12, Boots.

8 SPLASH YOUR FACE with cool water and apply moisturiser.

Avoid products with alcohol, as these will sting and cause skin to redden and dry out.
