GIT กำาลงกาวไปอกขนเพอตอบรบการเปลยนแปลงของยคสมยดวยการสรางความรวมมอกบทกภาคสวนในการวจยพฒนาและสงเสรมการออกแบบเครองประดบอยางมประสทธภาพและผลกดน ใหเกดนกออกแบบเครองประดบไทย และผผลตในอตสาหกรรมอญมณทมความสามารถพรอมกาวไปสเวทระดบโลก จงเปนทมาของงานวจย “แนวทางในการสรางนวตกรรมใหมทางดานการออกแบบเครองประดบ” โดยเปดโอกาสใหผมใจรกการออกแบบไดศกษาทดลองการทำางานรวมกนระหวางนกออกแบบ คณาจารย และผประกอบการ ในการพฒนาผลตภณฑเครองประดบดวยการออกแบบ ผานการศกษาวธการออกแบบในรปแบบตางๆ โดยมงเนนการศกษาจากวธการจดการสมมนากลม และคนหากระบวนการใหมๆ ผานกจกรรมการสมมนาเชงปฏบตการระดมสมอง ซงมผเขารวมจำานวน 27 ทานจากสาขางานทกำาหนด โดยวทยากรรบเชญ

นกออกแบบมชอระดบโลกชาวอตาเลยน Mr. Massimo Zucchi และหวหนาโครงการ ดร.วรวฒน สรเวสมาศ เปนผรวมดำาเนนการ การสมมนานไดวางกรรมวธใหม ในการสรางกระบวนการคด และกระบวนการพฒนาการออกแบบใหเหมาะสมกบบรบทไทย โดยใหความสำาคญกบวธการ ขนตอนการประสานงาน การพฒนาเชงบรณาการ การพฒนาองคความรและการตอยอดจากศลปนนกออกแบบ การนำาขอมลจากผผลตและนกการตลาด การวพากษวจารณเพอพฒนาแบบจนไดขอสรปในรปแบบตางๆ แลวนำามาทำาการบรณาการระหวางงานออกแบบและการผลต จนไดผลลพธชนตนเปน ธมบอรด (Theme Board) ทประกอบไปดวยคำาสำาคญ (Key words) ภาพประกอบสำาคญ (Key Visuals) ยงสามารถนำามาพฒนาเปนภาพแบบราง และภาพเขยนแบบเครองประดบ สองมต ผลงานทงหมดนเปรยบไดดงภาพสะทอนของแนวคดใหมในงานออกแบบเครองประดบไทยรวมสมย

PROJECT GLITZ Under The Research Project

“Platform for Innovation in Jewelry Manufacturing”

It is a well-known fact that Thailand is one of the World’s leading manufacturers of gem and jewelry, and has enjoyed an international reputation of fine craftsmanship in jewelry pro-duction and gemstone cutting. Thai gem and jewelry products have been bringing in revenue as one of the top exports of the country for nearly two decades. Recently, we have to face continuing challenges from both domestic and international markets, such as the fluctuation of currency exchange rates, economic recessions in the countries that are our trading partners, increasing prices of raw materials, as well as de-creasing supplies of gemstones. Moreover, our competitors have also been making continuing progress in product development, and marketing. Despite these obstacles, Thailand’s gem and jewelry industry has managed to overcome marketing challenges quite successfully, and is regarded as one of the most important mecha-nisms in the country’s export economy.

In the attempt to sustain the industry’s strength and competitiveness as one of the world’s leaders in this field, the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization), or GIT, which is the principal state agency whose responsibility is

to provide support for the development of the Thai gem and jewelry industry, realizes that research and development of design innovation and product standardization need to be urgently carried out, as they are considered to be one of the most important keys to the industry’s continuing success in a global market.

GIT is now taking another step to respond to the changing time and market conditions by collaborating with all the sectors concerned in the research and development, as well as the promotion of innovative and effective jewelry designs to strengthen the capacity of Thai designers and manufacturers, so that they will be able to successfully secure their firm positions on international level. It has become the ground to launch the research project “Platform for Innovation in Jewelry Manufacturing”, which was designed to open up a venue for aspiring designers to have the opportunity to study and work with eminent designers, scholars, and manufacturers to develop jewelry products through innovative designs. The activities were carried out through focus group seminars, as well as a brainstorming workshop to search for new direction and processes in jewelry designs, which was participated by 27 representatives from selected fields and organizations. The workshop was led by a leading Italian designer, Mr. Massimo

Zucchi, who was the invited speaker, and Dr. Veerawat Sirivesmas, the project director. The workshop has successfully laid down a new direct ion in the conceptual izat ion and innovative design processes that fit in with the Thai contexts. It has accorded due importance to methodologies, conceptualization process, coordination, development of a body of knowledge and further evolution based on the proffered ideas of artists and designers. It also incorporates the information provided by manufacturers and marketing experts, and findings from critical analyses among the participants, which results in the conclusions that can be used as the basis for an integrated development of design and manufacturing. The preliminary outcome of the workshop is the Theme Board, which comprises the key words and key visuals that are developed into prototype sketches, and two-dimensional jewelry images that reflect a new direction in Thai contemporary jewelry design.

The research project as a whole contributes to the building of positive attitudes towards the strengthening of the existing potential capacity as well as the formulation of a new direction in the designing process, which can be further adapted for practical use by all the parties concerned on a continuing and sustainable basis. It is based on the Thai concept of

sufficiency economy, and aims at providing a venue for creative expressions and the dissemination of the research results to the public, in order to develop a core of leading professional jewelry designers. The project also encourages production and commercial sales of the prototype designs. Therefore, GIT has decided to provide further support to the research project for the publica-tion of the research findings under the name PROJECT GLITZ. The publication is designed to provide information on the concept, principle, main theme, and complexity of the design pro-cess, as well as pictures of the prototype designs and examples of the jewelries produced in ac-cordance with the designs, so that they can be applied for further use and production by the gem and jewelry industry.

GIT is very proud to be part of the efforts to organize and conduct this research on innovation in jewelry design and manufacturing, which has provided all the designers involved with the opportunity to present their creative ideas and products to business entrepreneurs and the public in general. We also firmly believe that this new generation of designers can become an important driving force that will significantly contribute to the increase of the Thai gem and jewelry industry’s capacity, so that it will be able to successfully overcome all the obstacles in the fierce competition in a global market.

Due to the increasingly fierce competition in the business and industrial sectors in the past decade, most business and industrial enterprises need to develop their competitive capacity by giving more importance to the design of their products. The task does not entail only simply the design of forms and appearances, but it must also include the increase of the products’ values through the redefinitions of design in a new direction that will lead to effective innovation in the design process.

PROJECT GLITZ has been developed to create design innovation that is based on the Thai Essence in the contemporary Thai society with new perspectives and dimensions. They encompass the specifications of new conceptual framework, design process, choice of materials, production process, and presentation strategy. Innovative design is truly the most essential element that will enhance the value and prize of products, which will significantly contribute to the increase of the industries’ marketing competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.

PROJECT GLITZ is an effort to open up new perspectives and visions in the learning process through the coordination of various bodies of knowledge for the development of new directions in design innovation. We also work in close cooperation with the business enterprises in the private sector for the production of prototypes that can be further adapted for commercial purposes. The PROJECT GLITZ team hopes that our efforts will prove to be beneficial to the continuing development of the industry’s human resources, products and brands, so that the Thai gem and jewelry industry will remain highly competitive in a global market on a sustainable basis.

From the Past to the Present: Reflection on the Future of Thailand: Creative Industry! Creative Economy! Creative Culture!

Having had the opportunity to study the culture, traditions and ways of thinking in Italy, which is regarded as a world leader in high art and fashion, and origin of many internationally famous brands, I found that in regards to the ability and skills in gem and jewelry production in Thailand, we can also have a respectable place to stand in the World’s arena. However, what we need to create and develop on a continuing basis is the right conceptualization and creative process in our design work, so that the finished products will be recognized at an international level.

At present, many public and private organizations and institutions, as well as individual artists and independent designers, have been collaborating with one another in organizing activities that in one way or another contribute to the development of the gem and jewelry industry. It is an auspi-cious sign that networks of organizations and individuals are being established, which will lead to the integration of concerted efforts in every dimension that will definitely benefit Thailand’s gem and jewelry industry. It reflects

the new direction of a creative culture that is already being formed in Thailand.

If we take time to look around at all products that are popular among consumers, we will see that those products have been created with continuing modifications and adjustments to satisfy discerning customers. Producers of goods and products are now seeking new ways to de-fine, interpret and create new perception on their products so that they will always catch up with the prevailing trends and demands. Some jewelry products of this nature can also be found in the market. It might not yet be distinctly visible, yet at least the process has already started. Given time and steady development, we believe that the Thai jewelry industry will find its own unique character and effective productive direction eventually.

We cannot be too far wrong in claiming that we have already established a creative culture in our country. If we keep on the right track with determined efforts to develop it further, it will certainly lead to the successful development of a creative industry. With continuing cooperation among individuals and all the public and private organizations concerned, our future can really be assured. The future of Thailand’s creative industry, creative culture, and creative economy is now in our hands!

A PLATFORM FOR FURTHER CONTRIBUTION TO DESIGN INNOVATION IN THE THAI JEWELRY INDUSTRY. PROJECT GLITZ is an outcome of the research project “Platform for Innovation in Jewelry Manufacturing”, which

was carried out with an aim to contribute to the increase of product values through creative design strategies. It was financially supported by a fund provided by the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization).

PROJECT GLITZ is an extension of the above-mentioned research project. As the first activity under this project, a collection of prototype jewelries that were created as an outcome of a brainstorming workshop, which was participated by a selected group of scholars, jewelry designers, and representatives of gem and jewelry business enterprises, are presented. It is part of the public relations program to disseminate the research findings and information to the general public. The main objectives are to establish a data base and to further contribute to the study and research on the creation of new concepts, and the development of the design process. The appropriate direction is deemed to be the development of concepts and production that is based on the maximization of all potentials and use of local resources under the fundamental concept for the presentation of “Thai Essence in the contemporary society”.

REFLECTION ON THE CONTEMPORARY THAI ESSENCE Have we ever asked ourselves how well we know the things we see and live with in our daily life? Do we really

know who we are and how do we perceive ourselves in the present-day society? These questions were the basis of further queries that we have tried to answer through out-of-the box interpretation and search for the gist of Thai Essence in Thailand’s contemporary jewelry design and manufacturing.

Throughout the past until the present, when we talk about Thai Essence, the first thing people will think of is the forms, especially the traditional ones, which can be seen in a variety of product designs. However, when we had to answer the question about Thai Essence in the products that are to be created in the contemporary environment, we felt it was necessary to organize a brainstorming workshop with a group of experts to investigate all the possible dimensions of what is to be called contemporary Thai Essence. It further resulted in the creation of pro-totype jewelry pieces by a group of leading jewelry designers, as examples of what we deem to be the designs that quite successfully incorporate modern Thai Essence in both conceptualization and production processes.

Mr. Massimo Zucchi, an Italian expert in architecture and design was invited to act as the speaker for the workshop. Through his expert guidance and suggestions, all participants went through extensive discussions on Thai Essence, drawing on their own perspectives and experiences. They finally reached the conclusion that it still survives in the contemporary Thai society, in which clashes, contrasts, overlaps, inequities, and on the opposite direction, conformity and harmony in the ways of thinking, attitudes, and behaviors co-exist amidst the complex and multi-faceted culture. The apparent images might be ones of differences and divergences, but they are not necessarily irreconcilable contrasts, as they can be distilled and merged in the same melting pot of mutual geographical landscape and culture to form what can truly be called Thai Essence.

pants of the working have drawn a conclusion that Thai Essence comprises the four following features:

CONTRAST

By the term “CONTRAST”, we wish to portray the present Thai lifestyle, which is a mixture of our own culture with foreign ones. It is a situation in which modern technologies coexist with age-old arts and traditions; a phenomenon that is seemingly chaotic, full of contrasts and differences.

Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand with the most developed infrastructures and technologies. However, the modern façade does not necessarily and totally obliterate the beautiful Thai customs and traditions from this land, despite the fact that the city center is full of skyscrapers and filled with traffic congestion throughout the day and night, and renders the picture of urban confusion and hurried lifestyles.

However, the lifestyles of the people in Bangkok do not always be ones of pandemonium and confusion. If we have a chance to take a trip by boat along the Chao Phraya River, the principal river that runs through the heart of Bangkok, we can still observe magnificent views of the Grand Palace, Wat Phra chetuphon Temple (Wat Po), the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun) and others, as well as the traditional ways of life that are still practiced by people who live by the riverside.

Presenting food and other alms to the monks in the morning before going off to work is one of the common activities of people in Bangkok that we can still see everywhere in this megapolis. If we observe carefully, we can still discern that the seemingly never-ending growth of the capital city has its place side by side with the traditional culture and practices, as seen in the way people live according to the age-old ways of life and the religious activities in Buddhist temples in the middle of

the bustling city. This phenomenon is considered as one of the main features of Thai Essence that we dub as “CONTRAST”.

In this capital city, we can also see two forms of lifestyles that are distinctly contrasting from one another, in terms of what people eat, things that they use in daily life, or their favorite choices of arts and entertainment. They can be classified into two categories as follows:

The first could be referred to by the term “SIMPLICITY”, which is a relatively uncompli-cated lifestyle that some people still live. These people spend their lives in leisurely paces and closer to nature. They use utensils that are made from natural materials, listen to traditional folk music, and so forth. They work when it is necessary and take a rest when they feel tired. Their life cycle is closely related to the natural environment and simpler social interactions.

The second category can be referred to as “EXPLOSION”. It invokes the picture of the modern Thai lifestyle that is full of bustling activities and haste. It is exciting and striking in variety and interest, as one can see from the hip living style; people’s infatuation with trendy popular music, use of bold and brash colors in contemporary art, or even the popularity of food that is colorful with strong spicy taste such as the world famous Tom Yam Kung, or the Thai hot and sour prawn soup.

From the observation of the duality of contemporary Thai lifestyles, or the seemingly contrasting ideas, beliefs, and practices we are now following, the designers and artists have been inspired to present to the public new design concepts, with an underlying pride in what we Thai people are and possess, through the creation of these magnificent pieces of jewelry.

INSPIRATION : Traditional Thai handicrafts with an emphasis on the simple forms that inherently contain a sense of Thai-style refinement and gentility.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The rings, which are made of 925 sterling silver with 18 k gold plating, are replica images of traditional Thai woven baskets which are turned upside down. Certain details of the weaving patterns are left out, but the forms still retain the gracefulness of the original baskets.

TITLE : Siam

DESIGNER : Mr. Niwat Singchanachaikul

INSPIRATION : Under the EXPLOSION theme, the design of this piece is inspired by the famous shopping area in the city center that is well-known to both Thais and foreign tourists alike, which includes the Siam Square and other mega shopping centers. Flanked by massive shopping plazas called the Siam Paragon and Central World is the serene, forest- monastery style Wat Pathumvanaram, which is a royal temple built by King Rama IV over 150 years ago. It is an example of how traditional Thai culture and architecture can exist alongside high-rise buildings and modern lifestyles with ease and harmony.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The rings’ structures are tall as reference to the shopping centers’ high-rise buildings and modern living. Being also inspired by the multi-layered pagodas in a temple, the designer portrays them in the design by using gemstones with special cutting. Enameling techniques are used to create rhythmic spots on the sides to represent life in the modern environment that still retains traces of Thai traditional culture and architectural style, as seen in the peaceful co-existence of the temples and shopping centers.

TITLE : Tadd Torn (Toned down)

DESIGNER : Mr. Nattakorn Chompan

INSPIRATION : Under the EXPLOSION theme, the designer uses modified Thai style decorative patterns, as well as an imitation of the use of mosaics and colored glass tiles, which are normally utilized to decorate temple buildings, to create the bracelet. It is intended to represent the contrasts in the present Thai society, which exists among modern development and different cultural influences.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The bracelet is made of sterling silver with engraved designs. Pink color stones of various sizes and shapes are set against the black plated surface of the bracelet to convey a message on how the traditional Thai art and culture are able to move forward in harmony with the modern society. The various sizes and shapes of the gemstones represent modern technologies that are embraced by the society. The color tones and the way the gemstones are aligned along the modified Thai decorative pat-terns serve to indicate a continuing progress of all elements in the society towards the same direction, as well as an endless flow of movements and time.

INSPIRATION : Under the SIMPLICITY theme, the designer gets his inspiration from lotuses that are grown within the temple ground, which create a sense of peace and calmness every time one sees them, no matter how hurried and turbulent life beyond the temple’s walls will be.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The rings represent lotus flowers, both in budding and ready-to-bloom forms. The rings are made of sterling silver with gold plating, with textural designs on the surface that reflect the beauty of traditional Thai sculptures.

TITLE : Thai Tone

DESIGNER : Ms. Pirada Senivongse Na Ayudhya

INSPIRATION : Under the theme EXPLOSION, the designer sees an

amicable co-existence of both the new and old elements in an urban community. With reference to the fun and merriment that are being celebrated within an acceptable social framework, the designer uses bright and bold colors on a simple form to allude to the contrasts in the society, that somehow manage to share their allotted spaces in relative harmony.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The ring can be made either of sterling silver or anodized aluminum with stones cut in triangle shapes to fit with the ring design. Colors of the stones are to be selected to produce a sharp contrast with the color of the body of the ring. For examples, if the body is blue, the stones should be yellow-purple or green; if the body is green, pink stones should be used; if it is black, then the stones should be red, and so forth. The curved form serves to indicate the warmth and friendliness of Thai people.

INSPIRATION : This work is created under the SIMPLICITY theme, on which the designer employs the beautiful and unique Thai decorative designs commonly found in temples to merge with the idea of Thai people’s open-mindedness in their acceptance of new concepts and attributes from other cultures. However, the imported elements are not summarily followed or imitated with blind acquiescence. On the contrary, they have rather been carefully selected and adopted to be best suited to the indigenous Thai lifestyles and preferences.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The designer employs a traditional Thai flower-like decorative pattern with some modifications to create the gold-plated high polished earrings with a structure that is sturdy and strong in form with distinct lines and edges. The inner pieces can be turned about to hint at both Thai people’s readiness to accept new things, as well as their inherent desire to preserve their inherited cultural roots.

ความสงบทางจตวญญาณ หมายถง ความสงบ และการเขาถงแกนแทของชวตและจตวญญาณ เราจะหยดและอยกบตวเอง เปนชวงเวลาแหงความเรยบงายและการผอนคลาย กลบไปสรากเหงาและตวตนทแทจรง เปนการดำาเนนชวตทเขาถงแกนแทแหงพระพทธศาสนา มชวตทเรยบงาย เคารพธรรมชาต ถอยทถอยอาศย ไมเบยดเบยนกน พออยพอกน “มเทาทใช ใชเทาทม” เหนคณคาของสงเลกๆ นอยๆ รอบๆ ตว และใชประโยชนจากสงเหลานนอยางคมคา แนวคดเหลานลวนเปนสงทคนไทยในอดตยดถอและประพฤตปฏบตกนมา อยางเสมอตนเสมอปลาย นคอสงททำาใหเรามชวตทสงบสขมาอยางยาวนาน ความงดงามทเกดขนในงานศลปะ จะเกดขนภายใตความเรยบงาย มลวดลาย หรอเสนสายนอย ทสอออกมาใหเหนถงความสอดคลองกบธรรมชาตและความสงบสขทางจตวญญาณ

If we investigate Thai people and their lifestyles in all perspectives carefully, we can reach a conclusion that the Thais enjoy certain innate qualities that can be considered special blessings. They enable Thai people to create the lifestyle, and cultural artworks that are as outstanding as those of any other peoples in the world. Such blessings can be collectively called THAI LUCK, which comprises versatility, maturity and serenity.

VERSATILITY : Thai people are blessed with creative imagination, and also the courage to use their abilities and potential without being easily discouraged by any obstacles. They are, therefore, able to create artworks that are refined, stunning, complex, meticulous, and exquisitely beautiful. Thai artists are able to add as many details as they wish into their creative works, as we can see in the Thai fine ar ts objects produced by various techniques such gilded black lacquer, inlaying of mother-of-pearl, wood carving, nielloware, five-color pottery, painting of golden design on black or red background, glass decoration, and others. We can find these exquisite works in the products, and decorative items that are created and used in connection with the Buddhist faith, beliefs in divine human beings, and all other festivals and merry-making occasions.

MATURITY : Maturity means the state of being physically and emotionally developed. A mature person is able to spend his or her life with proper conducts in accordance with the rules, regulations, customs and tra-ditions laid down by the society. However, as a Thai saying goes- -- To do whatever

one likes is the real Thai way!-, many people opt to use various tricks to avoid being con-formed to the norms of the society. Faced with such an inclination, Thai adults have to devise many ploys to skillfully raise children to become upright and well-behaved per-sons, so that they will follow all the social rules adequately and satisfactorily without feeling that they have been forced to do so. When maturity is applied in the work of art, we will see art objects that are created with an underlying sense of balance. The works can be filled with lines and designs, and yet they are not overly-complicated or garish, with not too much or too little added in. In other words, they are created with a sense of comme-il-faut, or as it should be done.

SERENITY: Serenity means peace of mind and access to the true essence of life and spirits. We know when to stop and be with ourselves. We instinctively know when it’s time to return to simplicity and relaxation; to return to the roots of being or a way of life that is lived according to the Buddhist principles. To live a simple life with duerespect to nature, and consideration for the others; to be satisfied with what we have; to see the values of little things around us and to make the most of them economically; these are all the principles Thai people have held onto as guides for their actions and peaceful co-existence with others throughout many generations. The beauty shown in the Thai work of art is created with an underlying sense of simplicity, which conveys respect and harmony with nature, as well as spiritual peace within the artists who created them.

INSPIRATION : The designer has been impressed with the exquisite Thai art as seen in the architectural designs of buildings in the Grand Palace. The glass-tiled decorations, as well as the curve and concave lines at the base of the principal shrine, which are impeccably constructed with subtle and delicate details, simply shine out from within. They can be compared to Thailand, or as it was called Siam of old that, despite its relatively small size, has a great deal to impress any visitors who come to Suvarnabhumi, or this Golden Land of ours.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The whole bracelet is made with unique pierced design. It reflects the attention to details usually paid to Thai fine arts creations. It plays with the angles and degrees of settings to offer new and different perspectives from the products we have commonly seen. The stones are set with the gradation of sizes around the bracelet, which is a symbol of endless movements. Transparent space is also created to offer different perspectives between looking into the inside of the bracelet through the pierced design and the transparent stones. The designer intends to use silver color on the outside of the bracelet and gold on the inside in order to entice peo-ple to have a closer look. They will find that the slightly shim-mering golden color that they see through a glimpse from the outside is actually truly sparkling brilliance on the inside.

INSPIRATION : The designer is inspired by the shapes of traditional earthenware potteries. The concave and curve lines of the pots reflect harmony with nature, but at the same time the vessels produced can also be utilized in daily activities perfectly. The rings appear to be of simple forms, yet they contain an invisible shape of earthenware pottery inside. The designer intends to point out that an apparently simple thing may have inherent great values and utility, which can be likened to the way of thinking and the life style of Thai people who live in the rural area.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The rings are of simple round-shaped forms, showing a structure of lines that reflect the Thai sense of graceful-ness and gentility. It contains a hidden form of an earthenware vessel, which serves as a symbol of great utility that may be looked over by a superficial interest on the outer appearance. The gold color which can be clearly seen on the top of the rings is employed to stress the important element of the rings which is hidden inside. The rings are intentionally made to be light, so that they can be worn by insertion between fingers to remind the wearer of the importance of mindfulness in all the things we do. The part of the black color surface that comes into contact with the skin will gradually fade away. The degree of fading depends on how frequently the owner uses this piece of jewelry, so it serves automatically as a record of use by the wearer.

INSPIRATION : The designer has been inspired by the form of a traditional basket, which is a result of the combination of different weaving patterns used in forming its top and bottom parts. The texture of the woven surface also captures the designers’ interest.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The designer wishes to present the contrasts between the rough surface as seen from the outside, and the meticulous craftsmanship and warmth that are hidden inside. It reflects the simplicity and beauty of local handicrafts, which are made by natural materials that are locally available in combination with meticulous skills. The finished products may not attract immediate appreciation at a first glance, if one does not look carefully into the finer details. It is similar to life in rural areas, of which other people may only conjure pictures of desolation and hardship. Yet, little do they know that people who live there, while they might be deprived of certain luxuries and comfort, do enjoy the peace of mind rarely found in an urban life.

INSPIRATION : Under the concept of VERSATILITY, the designer draws upon the distinctive and complex features of Thai basketry in his design. The thin bamboo stripes are woven to form beautiful and uncommon shapes, which become a recurring inspiration for creative contemporary design.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The gold-plated silver earrings were first made as flat sheets with straight-line, bamboo-stripe designs used in basketry. They were then rolled up to form conical shapes of various sizes. Gemstones were set at the tips of some cones. Then they were strung together to form a set of earrings, with certain allowance for the components to be moved about as desired.

INSPIRATION : Under the theme VERSATILITY, the source of inspira-tion for the designer is the complicated lines and patterns used in basket weaving, which express a special characteristic of Thai Essence and fine craftsmanship.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The ring is made of gold plated silver. It is divided into two parts; the top and the body. The body is set with gemstones in a woven pattern. The top consists of six cones which are shaped like basketwork, with lines on the inside. Gemstones are set on the edge of the cones. A red gem is placed on the top of the middle cone to represent the famous Siamese Gem and the color of the Thai Kingdom.

When we talk about Thai Essence, it is difficult to define it in a single sentence or definition. Thai Essence comprises a great variety of elements. Thai people have always been versatile and ready to accept new ideas and things from other cultures. However, we have always adapted them to suit our way of life. Arts, cultures, traditions, architectural styles etc. from other countries such as China, India and others, have been adopted, then modified and blended into our way of living since the distant past. We can still see traces of the adopted and adapted cultures everywhere in the Thai society at present.

The things that cannot be looked over are certain cultural traits that have always been embedded in the Thai culture for so long, such as reverence for Buddhism and things that are related to the religion, whether they are the teachings, places or objects; respect for the elders; humility, gentleness and kindness towards others. Those are the abstract elements that have formed our own roots, which we can palpably feel in the Thai way of life that has been nurtured by Buddhism, and which has resulted in the formation of the unique Thai culture from the past until the present.

Based on the above-mentioned background, we have tried to search for the Thai Essence, which, for our group, can be described by three key words, namely respect, gentleness, and kindness. These key words have been analyzed with a conclusion that they are originated in the Buddhist teachings that emphasize the importance of good conducts. These three key words are thus regarded as the essence of goodness in mankind.

However, in order to understand what goodness is, one must also understand badness or evil. Goodness and evil have always existed in a human being, like two sides of a coin. Buddhism also gives another definition of a human being as being consisted of body and spirit.

A man has a coarse body and a pure mind or spirit.

Looking at it from this angle, we will realize the truth that human beings always have two opposing elements in them. Some people are endowed with beautiful bodies, but their mind may not be as beautiful as we see from their outer appearances. On the other hand, some people we regard as plain or even ugly may have a very beautiful mind, so we cannot always discern the truth just by simply looking at the appearances on the outside. The dual existence of body and mind also denotes contrast. Contrast in a general sense can be described as the opposition or dissimilarity of things that are compared; such as the outside-inside, black-white, hard-soft, smooth-rough, and so forth.

Chaotic to Calm; Rough to Smooth; Soft to Hard; Outer and Inner; Structure and Surface. This is how we seek to explain the Thai Essence, which is implied in the jewelries created under this group. The designers have used certain arts components and tangible ma-terials as the media to express the abstract concepts they mean to convey.

Peace, simplicity, and tranquility are reflected in the polished surface and simple forms.

The gentleness of Thai people, which is backed up by internal strength, is expressed by the use of soft materials, with a metal structure underneath. The hidden strength and hardness can be felt when the objects are touched.

The contrast between outward appearances and the real essence that is hidden inside is presented through the differences of the materials’ surfaces and the actual bodies of the jewelries. For example, the apparently rough and sharp edges are actually soft to touch. Drawn on this prevailing concept, the jewelries created under this group serve to elucidate the similarities and diversities that have been intricately infused in Thai culture.

INSPIRATION : The designer draws upon a Buddhist saying on belief or faith which warns us that “Do not rashly believe in anything that people tell us to. We should study and experience everything first before we decide for ourselves whether to believe it or not.” With this maxim in mind, the designer has created the rings that serve to convey the message in a modern art form.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The designer uses a variety of materials with different textures and forms to create the rings. The pieces that seem to be heavy with rough surface and contrasting high polish are actually very light when worn. The surfaces and forms of the rings may seem to be hard, but they are surprisingly soft when touched. The whole set is meant to remind us that what we perceive on the outward appearances may contain a reality that is totally different and unexpected.

TITLE : The Faith

DESIGNER : Ms. Jurairut Podisthasiri

INSPIRATION : The designer is inspired with her faith in Buddhism, which comprises the Buddha, the Dharma (Teachings of the Buddha) and the Sangha (The Monks’ Order). The bracelet is inspired specifically by the conducts of the monks, whose duty is to keep Buddhism alive through their righteous conducts and propagation of Dharma by traveling far and wide to teach dharma to people. One of the most important possessions of a wandering monk is a Klod, or an umbrella-like net, which is used as a covering of the ground where the monk uses as his resting and sleeping place during his travel.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The Klod-like design employs the structure and lines that show the differences in terms of hardness-softness, shortness-length, and height-shortness with a core line that is likened to the Middle Path. The Middle Path means the right way of living that is based on modera-tion and avoidance of both the extremes of sensual indulgence and self-mortification. The bracelet is plated metal in a somber color tone, which suggests a sense of mystery. And yet the surface, which sparkles with high polish, conjures a picture of the reflection of candlelight on a Buddha image, which denotes the glory of Buddhism.

mind is employed to show the relationship of what we can only superfi-

cially see and touch with our physical senses and the truth of all things

DESIGN CONCEPT : The rings are made with a combination of silver

and silicone. Silicone acts as a skin of the silver rings, where the silver

wires with a ball shape stick out through the silicone.

INSPIRATION : At the end of last year, I went to a temple where a lot of people were gathering in the temple ground, doing various activities that made the whole scene look a like a market place. In the main hall, however, some people were quietly paying their homage to the Buddha or sitting down to meditate peacefully. It was so amazing to see two events that were so different and contrasting to each other in the same place.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The two silver rings display images of shoes that are placed in confusing disorder outside a religious hall. In one section, the images confer a sense of chaos, while the rest of the smooth, uncluttered surface conveys a sense of peace and tranquility. One ring has a triangle space of gold color, which is used to refer to the temples and Buddhism as a whole that are highly valued and revered by all the Buddhist followers. The space denotes an area of spiritual peace that is created to offer protection from the confusion and chaos from the outside.

The design concept of our group is derived from the rein-terpretation and investigation of the Thai Essence, which was set off by a simple question of what the Thai Essence really is.

Even though we are Thai, it is still a very difficult task for us to define the Thai Essence. We were born with it. It is a way of life. It is the way we speak, think, believe, eat and live our life. In this search, we have ex-plored the identity of the Thais through the investigation of races, geographical location, climate, culture, tradition, so-ciety, and politics, which are connected to the Thai people from the past to the present. However, with the dramatic changes in every level of social

and cultural structures around the world, as a result of the in-fluences of globalization and its tool; namely capitalism, the cultural and social identity of Thai people has been blurred, ignored, and in some cases, vanished.

The design concept for this group is focused on our perception of the Thai way of life as a duality, which means being twofold; a classification of something into two opposed parts or subclasses. It comes from our observation of the merging of contrasting ele-ments in the Thai way of life. Therefore within one entity, there might be at least two opposite elements that are embedded and coexist.

TITLE : HidingDESIGNER : Mr. Taweesak MolsawatARTIST STATEMENT : The focus for the design of this set of art jewelry is on the influences of globalization on Thailand as a local community, and the search for the answers on how Thai jewelry designers and artists would be able to encounter globalization, to open up and strengthen the space for innovative design of contemporary and art jewelry in Thailand, as well as to maintain our art and design identity by using the Thai culture and traditions as the starting point for a new interpretation.

With the influences of globalization and capitalism, most of the goods that are mass produced through the mechanism of global business management are usually similar in appearances and utility. There are almost no alternatives for the consumers to choose from. Some of the beautiful and invaluable local cultural heritages have been ignored and abandoned as a result of the influx of foreign cultures. However, the trend is now being reversed at present. More people and designers alike have been searching more than ever for the authentic cultural identity, which have been formed in connection to the local habitat, climate, and the way of life of a particular group of people over a long period of time. This set of prototype art jewelry is the outcome of an investigation and search for the Thai cultural identity through contemporary and art jewelry design by using the Thai way of life as a source for new interpretations. The invaluable local aesthetical accomplishments, which reflect our unique tradition and culture, form a significant element for the designers to explore in order to demonstrate the DNA of Thai contemporary and art jewelry in the present global climate.

The designers intend to use this set of art jewelry as a mirror to examine our roles and responsibilities as Thais

through the investigation and question of the Thai Essence. The focus is on the interaction of the members of the society in all the social activities and other issues in a modern society where differences and diversity reign. The work is intended to serve as a catalyst to provoke and stimulate new interpretations and ideas among the people who have viewed it, so that they may actively engage in and interact with the work both conceptually and visually.

INSPIRATION : The work is intended to be an interpretation of the Thai contemporary lifestyle which is largely influenced by global cultures, and to pose an open-ended question for the users, who have to find the answer through their interactions with the work.

DESIGN CONCEPT: This set of jewelry consists of twelve individual pieces of different designs and sizes. It is designed to let the wearers decide for themselves how they want to arrange the pieces on their bodies. The designer intends to invite the users to become active partners in the design process and to play a significant role on how they want the work to be seen as a creative expression of their own identity. The symbol of the Thai Essence is to be hidden under the clothes, leaving only some clues for the viewers to take a guess at what is hidden inside. By creating this curiosity, the viewers are encouraged to investigate the pieces up close both visually and conceptually. In addition, the whole collection is revertible so the inside could be presented on the outside as well.

Additionally, this work is intended as a reflectionon t ime and the t rue nature of th ings, which are conceived to be impermanent acccording to the Buddha’s teachings. I use the appearance and disappearance of the impressions on the dress after the actual pieces have been removed as a metaphor of this concept.

TITLE : Reflection of Duality

DESIGNERS : Mr. Worakij and Ms. Prinnuj Kijjaraksuvanich

INSPIRATION : The Thai way of life is closely connected to the river and waterways. The design of this piece is inspired by the life of the Thai communities that have settled close to water sources. They live mostly in extended families like large groups of water lotuses commonly seen in the ponds, canals and rivers. Moreover, the flow of the rivers can also be likened to the arts, cultures and traditions of other cultures that come into our culture in a continual flux.

DESIGN CONCEPT : Thai people are like a group of lotuses that seem to sway along with the water flow in gentle movements, yet the roots are always firmly placed to the fertile ground. In the same manner, we Thai people have always retained our own culture and identity, despite the influx of other influences. The gold color of the lotuses is employed to represent the rich heritage of Thailand’s long history, independence and internal stability that has never been changed nor destroyed. The colors of the surfaces vary from the colors of silver to black rhodium, and transparent resin, which represent the different cultures and periods that those cultures were imported into Thailand.

INSPIRATION : Under the concept of Material-Spirit, the designer wishes to represents the dual coexistence of the physical and the spiritual attributes in the Thai society in this work.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The ring is decorated with gemstones that are set in lines to divide the patterns into two parts. On one side, the pattern represents skyscrapers of various heights in black color. The pattern on the other side represents the temples and pagodas. The gemstones set in the middle represent the people who live in the modern Thai society.

INSPIRATION: Whispering into her ear, he takes her on his lap,leaning himself against her body, he touches her cheeks and they both become lost in their reveries and passionoate love for each other! Putting his arms around her, he kisses her gently, telling her that she has nothing to fearTheir passion almost blinds them as if they were strucked by thunderThe sky roars so loud and the sound revibrates throughout heavensThe clouds move to hide the bright sun Mekhala, the Ocean Goddess, flashes her precious gemto tease Ramasura who chases after her in the sky from time immemorialRamasura tries to thow his axe at the Goddess, creating such a turmoil as he wishes to take the gem from her to make it his ownThe rain then falls down gently on the virginal golden flowerwhich opens up its petals for the bee to immerse itself in its heartThe lovers become so enraptured as if they were in the seventh heavenThey are falling in love for lifeas they have consummated their passion with such delight!

The poems quoted are taken from a Thai classical literature called INAO, which was composed by King Rama II (1768-1824). It is a tale of love and passion between young lovers that are portrayed so beautifully. The ring is an attempt to represent the passionate

love described in the poems in a tangible form.

DESIGN CONCEPT : The ring entitled “All about Love” is inspired by the beautiful poems that describe an erotic love scene of a young couple. It also contains a reference to an aspect of the Thai Essence. The triangle shape of the body represents a heart or femininity. The pink color signifies love. The designs and patterns on both sides represent the act of love-making between a man and a woman, which is metaphorically compared to the fragrance of a flower and the torrential waves in the ocean.

Among the various creative waves that are happening in Thailand at present, Project GLITZ is one of the attempts to contribute to the upgrading of the Thai jewelry design industry. We have collected information on the experiences in the whole Thai gem and jewelry industry through the study of all activities regardless of their nature or forms, as they can be regarded as equal parts in the whole stream of creativity, whether they are on the upstream, in the middle or on the downstream sides. Project GLITZ has endeavored to utilize all those experiences to present what is currently in existence, as well as what is going to be in the future. Our participation in the process of the upgrading of the Thai jewelry design industry is intended as a contribution and support of the young saplings of creative forces that will hopefully nurture the industry in the future.

Modern industries are distinctly different from the ones in the former era, in the way that consumers’ needs and desires are now regarded as the most paramount prerequisites. Producers of consumer goods and service providers need to look for products and services that are unique and different to present to their prospective customers. It means that they need to find a way to add more values to their products and services through innovative designs that utilize the concepts and forms most suited for modern lifestyles, and changing behaviors and needs of the consumers. This is the trend that is happening in all industries in every corner of the world.

Project GLITZ is fully aware of the utmost importance of creative designs and the need to redirect the momentum of the Thai gem and jewelry industry. It is an example of the projects that aims at the increase of commodity values to the products that are made domestically with the purpose of exportation to large foreign markets.

Thai Essence that the participants in the project

have offered to define in four main topics is like a big mirror that reflects the dynamics of Thai design works, which employ creative thinking and imagination to embrace the contemporary Thai identity in all dimensions, including philosophy, traditions, and adaptation for usages in the new perspectives. It proves that Thai designers are ready to present innovative ideas and products that can become highly competitive in a global market, as we can see from the prototype jewelry designs presented in this project.

The heart of this project is to present a new direction in the development of Thai creativity through the selection and combination of the various Thai concepts and forms that are already existing around us with fresh perspectives, attitudes, queries and investigation. This is an innovation by itself, in which experts and scholars from various disciplines have made an elaborate effort in the investigation and pursuit for new answers and directions that will lead to the development of product designs that are compatible with the needs of each target group, as well as the changing time.

As long as the globalization process is still on the move, and Thailand still remains part of the global community, we have to always be ready to face the challenges of changes, development or even demises of certain ideas and proclivities. The future trends, however, would always have to be rooted in our ideas, and what we have done in the past and are practicing at present. To maintain the element of continuity in our works is therefore a very significant task. If we can spread the concept for further application in other industries, we will be able to raise the value to Thai consumer goods and products, which is an effective way to contribute to the development of Thailand and Thai entrepreneurs in the future. Opportunity is knocking on our door and we should not miss it by any chance!

Reflection on the Next Direction: Where do we go from here?

ในความหลากหลายของกระแสงานสรางสรรคทเกดขนในประเทศไทย PROJECT GLITZ เปนอกหนงความตงใจ จากมมมองทมองผานทงระบบของอตสาหกรรมอญมณและเครองประดบไทย ไมวาจะเปนกจกรรมในลกษณะใดจะอยในรปแบบใด จะอยในเสนทางทเปรยบดงสายนา ทมตนนา กลางนา หรอปลายนา กตาม PROJECT GLITZ ไดเกบเกยวสะสมประสบการณจากกจกรรมตางๆ เหลานน มาทาเพอใหเกดผลของงาน เพอนาเสนอสงทปรากฏอยและจะมผลตอไปในอนาคต การไดเขามามสวนรวมในกจกรรมเพอยกระดบงานออกแบบเครองประดบไทย โดยมความหวงวาจะชวยสงเสรม และเพาะกลาหนอออน แหงพลงความคดสรางสรรคใหหลอเลยงอตสาหกรรมไดดงตงใจ

เนองจากอตสาหกรรมยคใหม แตกตางจากอตสาหกรรมในยคกอนหนาน ทเหนอยางชดเจนคอ การมองความตองการของผบรโภคเปนหลก เพราะฉะนนผผลตและผใหบรการ จะตองเปนผนาเสนอ และ มองหาสนคาและบรการทคาดวาผบรโภคตองการ การสรางเอกลกษณ สรางความแตกตาง หรอหาวธสรางสรรค เพอเพมมลคาใหกบสนคาและบรการ ผานทางการออกแบบดวยแนวคดและรปแบบทเหมาะสมกบพฤตกรรม วถชวต และความตองการใหมๆ คอสงทกาลงเกดขนในทกอตสาหกรรมทวโลก

PROJECT GLITZ คอ โครงการทเลงเหนความสาคญในดานการออกแบบ และกาหนดทศทางการเคลอนไหวของอตสาหกรรมอญมณในประเทศไทย เปนตวอยางโครงการทมงสรางมลคาเพมใหกบสนคาทผลตภายในประเทศ แตมตลาดใหญอยในตางประเทศ

Guest Speaker: Mr. Massimo Zucchi

Mr. Massimo Zucchi is a renowned Italian architect and designer, who had previously worked with the famous Bvlgari Group during the late 1970s. In early 1980s, Mr. Zucchi established his own design company called Studio Zucchi Design in Milan. He is a principal figure in the design of high-end products for internationally famous European and Asian brands, including Rolex, Corum, De Grisogono. Ferrari, and Bugatti. He was also involved in fashion trendsetting, which was organized and carried out by the World Gold Council in the last decade. He also acted as the Scientific Director for the MA Program in Jewelry Design of Domus Academy in Milan. He has continuously created new innovative designs for the world-famous fashion brands up until the present.
