Special Use Precautions:

SpIce 20P Is Intended for control of unwanted woody vegelalion such as Irees, s/vubs and vines. SpIke 20P will also c:oraoI herbaceous bIoadleal pIanIs such as clover or lespedeza. Grasses in the area ImmedaIeIy ...... 10 peIeIs may be le~ damaged. DormInI season ippIlcaIIon Is recol1VlIellded 10 mi lImIze herbIc:kIaI effects on grasaeI and OIher herbaceous plaru. The hettllcldallICIIvIy of SpIke In soli may prevenllhe growth of trees, shrubs and other bro8dIeal vegotatlon for several yen alter lreatment.

Safe use of SpIke 20P requires the foUowlng gul~lIne. to be carefUlly fOllowed:

Treatment Satback: Do not apply Spl<e 20P In the vIcInIIy of desirable pianIs. Exposure of even a &mal pari of a plant I0OI system fo Spl<e may cause severe pIanIlnjUIy or death.

Note: PlanllOOIs usually occupy an area much larger than lhe aerial porIloo of lhe plant. Treatmert setback dislance should be 1 10 211me1 the height or width 01 adjacenl nonIargal vtgelallon, whichever Is greater. For exalf1)le, I adjacent nortarge: vegetation is 25188t lall, the treatment setback should be 25 to 50 leet.

II there Is a questbn about appropriate setback distance, cortact an Arborculturist (tree expert) to determine it the proposed treatmert area is Iree 01 roots of desirable vegetation.

Potentia' Product Movement: SpIce 20P or Spike-containing soil may be 1'10. lm treated areas by flowing water, wind or m&chanical means. Do not apply Spike in area' ."ere overland flow of water might move Spite . 20P or Spike-contalnlng soil 110111 the treated area. 00 not apply where wind erosion may cause movernert 01 Spik~ainlng soiIlrom the treated area unless the surface has been stabilized with a {PY8I rnuk:h or some other means. Do not apply in areas where soil may be redistributed by mectoanical means to non-treated areas.

Cleaning of Equipment: Thoroughly clean aU traces of Spike 20P lrom applicatior, equipment atter use. Do not e"1)ly residues cleaned trom application equipment on areas where cortact with rOOls 01 desirable vegelalion may occur.

Remedial Action After ACCidental Application or Spill: Take action 10 rninknize the etlects of an accidental application or spill immediately . Once ralnlall has moved Spike Into the plant root zone, the effect on woody plants Is Irreveralble. Damage from accidertal application or spill may be prevented only it so~ containing SpIce Is carefully removed before rainfall has moved SpIce Into the root zone. Apply a waterproof covertng 10 the aIIecled area unt~ cleanup Is acco~shed. Carefully coIIec:t Spike pellets and/or Spike-cortainlng soil with appropriate equlpmert and dispose at an approved landfill site. II rainfoll has occurred, remove surface soil In the aflected area to the depth of Spike penetration.

General Information

Spike 20P is a surface applied soil-active herbicide lor control of woody plants (trees, shrulls ,nt< vines). Treatmerts become effective atter suIIIcient ralnl .. has occurred to IMV" tM active Ingredient In SpikeG!rto the I0OI zone. HerbicIdal symptoms appear most r~' when applied just betore seasonal rainlal. Treated trees and shrubs (brush) exhibit/!!I (1~lorosla and browIng followed by delollation. For best brush control results, do not disturb intact plants tly such pradices as wood cutting, chaining or burning for two yealS a:!er Spike 20P application. Resprouting is more likely to occur if plants are disturbed belon, co~te woody plant control occurs.

General Use Precautions

• Maximum Appllclltlon Rate for Grazing or Haying: If treated area is to be used for grazing or haying, do not apply more ttoan 10 pounds per acre 01 Spike 20P in areas receiving 20 inches or less average anooaJ rairifal, or more than 20 pounds per acre 01 Spike 20P in areas receiving more than 20 inches average annual rainfaD.

• Haying restrtctlon: 00 not cui hay for Uves!ock feed for one year after a Spike Ireatment. • EHects on H8ft)aceous Vegetation: Spike 20P may injure or suppress certain

herbaceous vegetation In the treated area. Therefore. do not apply where such injury cannot be tolerated. Injury to most herbaceous pereMial plants is reduced if Spike is applied when vegelation is dormant.

• Dltchbank Usage: Do not apply Spike 20P to any portion 01 a ditchbank thai wi. come into cor,.act with water as movement of Spike in waler may resua in injury or death to nontarget vegetation. 00 not apply on dilches used 10 Iransport irrigation or potable water.

• 00 not apply Spike 20P more lhan once per year.

Factors in Herbicidal Response

Soli Texture, 5011 Deplh and Organic Matter: Poor control or erralic resubs are likely to occur when Spike 20P is applied to soils containing more than 5"10 organic matter or more than 30"10 clay. 00 not apply to "bIackIand" or other heavy clay soils which crack axtensively upon drying. Other deep, medium and fine-textured soils supporting deep-rooted woody plant species require increased application rates for ccnsistent control. The susceptibility of woody plants occuring on shallow, coarse or rocky soils with low organic matter is normally increased due to increased soil availability of Spike and shallow rooting depth. Therefore, use application rales at the low end of the rate range in these situalions.

Woody Plant Stze and Density: The height and density of woody vegetation is a reliable indicator 01 soil conditions. Woody vegetation is generally laller and more dense where soils are deeper and/or 01 medium to line texture and where soil moisture conditions are more favorable. HiCher rates in the rate range are required on such sites. On sites with coalSe, shallow or rocky conditions with less favorable soil moisture conditions, woody vegetation win be smaller and less dense. lower rates in the rate range are required for control on such sites. Where a high level 01 woody plant control is required and application rates cannot be adjusted for changes in soils, plant size or density, apply Spike at a r ate sufficient to cont!"'1 the taleSl and most dense woody vegetation in the treatment area.

Application Timing: Spike 20P may be applied any.ime excepl when the soil is Irozen or is saturated with moisture. For optimum resuhs, applicatIOns should be made prior to the resumption of &dive seasonal growth in the spring or before expeded seasonal rainfan. In areas receiving greater than 25 inches 01 annual rainfall. late summer and fa" applications may require a higher application rate in the indicated rate range to achieve consistent control.

Spike 20P Is recommended for control 01 brush regrowth after dozing or shredding, provided the regrowth has reached an average height of five feet or more prior to application. Spike works best when there is an abundance of active leaf area 10 SlimJlate water and helticide uptake during the season following application. TaMer regrowth will tend to provide fasler and more consistenl brush control.

Spike 20P may cause telJllOrary herbicidal SY"1ltorns to appear on perennial grasses. Oormant o;eason application is recommended to minimize herbicidal eHads on desirable forage grasses.

Ran;,eland and Pasture Management Information

Thera era no lebel restrictions which require livestOCk grazing to be daleyed following an eppIlclltlon of Splka 2OP. SpIke 20P Is a peleted fomUatlon and does not adhere 10 to pima. ThereIore.lIgnIflcant plant resIdueS do not oocur as a result of app/Ic:3tlon. Howevw. at the lime of IIJ't"IUIkin forage epacIes may be 'P8fC81y dIstrIluted n in a low state of vigor cUt to competition from woody plants. Under IUCh clrcul"l1llal1Cel. the density ... YIgor of forage species may be anhanced by deferment of grazing following application of Spb 2OP.

Grazing MIInagamant For opIlroom perennlallorage grass response. desirable species shou~ be presenlln the area to be treated 81 a minimum of 10% of normal plant density (density. plants per unit area) COfIll8RId 10 similar rangeland or pasture des not dominated by woody plants. To encourage forage grass response. grazing should be deferred during the entire active growing season following application. Poor vegetative vigor or inadequate rainfal. may necessitate additional grazing deferment during periods of active forage growth. Light grazing of maturelOrage after seed maturly wiI not harm grass recovery and can aid in seed dispersal. Forage grass production usually increases as woody plant competition for water and nutrients is reduced. However. increased forage production is also dependent on adequate rainfaU and a sound grazing management program.

Precaution: The density of cool season grass stands such as fescue and crested wheatgrass may be reduced after Spike 20P application. Factors which may contribute to the possibility of stand reduction include excessive application ra:es. areas of shallow or rocky soil and low brush (ldnsily.

Rangeland and Pasture OVeraeadlng: Apply Spike 20P at recommended rates. Overseeding Involving buming or chaining 01 treated brush should not be attempted for at least two growing seasons alter application. Apply seed and fertiliZer at recommended rates into ash as soon as possible after burning or just prior 10 chaining. Cool season grasses are normaly seeded in early fall and warm season grasses in the spring after the expected frost"ree date. Aorial Eeeding without burning or dlaining may be attempted in the faU or spring loIIowir.g a Spike application. but natural seedbed conditions must be relied upon for seedling estabtishment. Consult local range management specialists for recommendations on locally adapted species. seeding time and grazing management.
