One time, I woke up late, took a shower in

a blink of an eye, and found there’s nothing

to wear. I needed something comfortable, ef-

fortless, yet well dressed. I went down and

knocked at my parent’s door, looked my

mom’s side of closet. All those flowery preBy

things, made me sick. Instead, there’s anoth-

er corner of black monochrome colors and

a stack of oversized tees that fascinated me.

Yup, it was my dad’s part of clothes. Eventu-

ally, I took one of his white Cambodia tees

with a light fabric and a pair of his black

socks, then mixed it with my mid pencil skirt,

black boots, and a gold chain necklace of

mine. Oh god, his socks was heaven. The

thickness is perfect, they made my feet warm

and fit in, no tight-fitting at all.

From time to time, it happened to many of

Le erus. When there’s nothing to wear and we are

bored to death about all those pretty things

that hanged on the closet, we found our

boyf and dad’s more interesting. They hold

something else that much more than their

appearance, something worth more than the

oversized cuts and monochrome color. Com-

fortable and effortless, they bring us joy!

Cheers!

Meet THE icon

r a y iRayi with an Y? That’s the first question that popped up in my mind when I saved his contact on my mobile phone. And he answered, yes, 4 letters! with Y and I. It sounds a bit odd for me to hear a name of Rayi, and odder when he spelled it out. Another letters that means a lot to him is A and N, which completed by his R, RAN, the band that he found 7 years ago. When I looked at RAN’s posters, that bald-headed figure always become the highlight, seems like it is the icon of RAN. We invited him to meet up in a flash and talk about his current activities and high-school-sweetheart marriage life. He came to our office in denim hoodie, fascinating white watch, and sneakers, and greeted us with his gentle voice.

HI RAYI, WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY UP TO?I’ve been busy promoting RAN’s latest album.

IS THERE ANY OTHER THINGS THAT YOU FIND ENTICING BESIDES MUSIC?No, I’m currently living my dream. I do what I

Iove, people appreciate it, and I’m earning money

through my creation. What can be compared to it?

No other thing that attracts me as strong as music.

WHAT’S YOUR PART IN RAN?I There’s no prominent figure in RAN. We do it to-

gether for all, all for one. RAN reflects each of us,

33.3% me, 33,3% Asta, and Nino the rest. I take vo-

cal, music, and create the lyric, so do Nino and Asta.

WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC THAT INSPIRE YOU PER-SONALLY?

RnB and hip hop! But my first jump into music was

the Indonesian Youth Orchestra while I was in sec-

ond grade of elementary school.

YOU SEEMS TO HAVE COLLABORATED WITH MANY ARTISTS. COULD YOU SHARE WITH US ABOUT THE COLLABORATOR, AS L’ALPHAALPHA, BAYU RISA, MATTHEW SAYERZ, ADE HABIBIE. WAS THERE ANY CERTAIN CONCEPT?The concept is the diversity itself. I like to explore

distinctive of genres and learn a lot from them.

When they asked me to collaborate, I nodded with-

out a doubt. Even Ridho Roma once asked me to

contribute in his tune, but unfortunately there’s an

obstacle back then. But I would love to if there’s an-

other chance.

WHO’S NEXT? WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO ASK FOR COLLABORATING?Dewi Sandra! She’s a versatile female singer. She

sings in many different genres but still impressive.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT MUSIC IN THE LOCAL SCENE? ANY FAVORITE?Nowadays, society have much more interest in mu-

sic. Many new artists pop up, and they have faith in

local music. My favorites are Glenn Fredly, Tulus,

Agnes Monica, and Andien.

DO YOU PLAY ANY INSTRUMENT?I declare myself as a drummer who trapped as a

singer hahhaaha.

IS IT IMPORTANT TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY INSTRUMENT? HOW WILL YOUR FUTURE KIDS PLAY?No, I wouldn’t determine whether my future kids

will play or not. It depends on their own interest

later.

WHAT’S YOUR DAILY OUTFIT ESSENTIALS?Simple and comfortable. I choose my daily outfit de-

pend on my mood and today’s weather.

WHAT’S YOUR ESSENTIAL THING IN ATTIRE?Shoes! I’m a sneakers addict. I have almost 150

pairs, which most of them are basketball shoes.

Since I moved in to an apartment, I needed to refine

my collection into 30 pairs. One of that tragic mo-

ment in a life time.

WHICH ONE IS THE MOST VALUABLE ONE?Nike Pharrel Williams edition. There are only 700

pairs worldwide. I bought it online, shipped from US

and when Pharrel came to Indonesia, I finally got his

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT, WHILE YOU ARE ON STAGE/OFF STAGE?No. I’m just being myself. We don’t have any stylist

until now.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF A MAN WITH JEW-ELRY?It’s not something strange. As long as they’re com-

fortable with it and wear it confidently.

DO YOU WEAR ONE? Yes. A hat and wedding ring.

WHAT IS YOUR TYPE OF A GIRL? DO YOU FIND A GIRL WITH BOYISH LOOK ATTRACTIVE? I find a girl who loves to try on any style more ap-

pealing, thus, me as the connoisseurs wouldn’t get

bored. It’s your duty to make your clothes look cool.

HAS YOUR WIFE EVER BORROW YOUR CLOTHES? VICE VERSA?She often borrows my sport jackets. In the other side,

I would never do the same. It’s the matter of size.

But actually, I bought women’s top once. I was going

to perform underdressed. I tried on the layered top

by xsml and found it fit in perfectly on me, instead I

wear it to perform.

WHAT IS THE MOST LOVELY THING THAT YOU HAVE EVER DONE TO YOUR WIFE?

A song called D’inspiration. D stands for my wife,

Dilla.

HOW DID YOUR WEDDING FEEL LIKE?Like what my dream is all about, wore sneakers and

she wore a dress by our favorite local brand, xsml,

accustomed by Biyan himself. And accompanied by

the Jurassic Park soundtrack along the aisle.

Canvas and leather, are known as main fabrics for casual or formal occasion.

Strong character that they possessed, make them last from time to time. We

found them mostly on the hardwear goods, such as bags and shoes. Many

used to think should I use canvas or leather instead? But since people locally in

Indonesia has implemented them on their daily clothes, we’re no longer make

a choice between them. Nowadays we can have them both. Actually nope, we

must have them both! In any form and any style.

Chopin Java

F E A T U R E DB R A N D

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME?“Chopin” itself come from the name

of French composer Fréderick Cho-

pin, while the word “Java” represents

where the brand was first established:

The Java island of Indonesia. The

name “Chopin Java” shows the iden-

tity of the brand, which offers the fu-

sion of Indonesian traditional culture

and Western/Modern trends.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT DESIGNING MENSWEAR?We can express our creativity, our pas-

sion and ourselves. Just like making

music.

HOW DID YOU GET CONNECT-ED WITH EACH OTHER?Communicate, talk, whisper, chat,

brainstorm, have fun, chill out, and

swagging around hahaha

WHERE DO YOU THINK YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES COME FROM?Music. The name Chopin Java itself

was inspired from the song “Chopin

Larung” by Guruh Soekarno Po-

etra and Chrisye’s well-known group

called Guruh Gipsy. The concept of

their music is mixing modern instru-

ments with traditonal Javanese and

Balinese music styles; it is now consid-

ered as a landmark album. In 2007,

Rolling Stone Indonesia voted it as

the second best Indonesian album of

all time.

“That’s why we thought, why don’t

we apply that concept into the Indo-

nesian Fashion Industry”

WHAT WAS THE MOST EXCIT-ING MOMENT FOR CHOPIN JAVA LAST YEAR?We were able to participate in “INA-

CRAFT 2013, The 15th Jakarta In-

ternational Handicraft Trade Fair”,

and nominated as the 5th posiCon for

The Most Innovative Men’s Wear by

UNESCO, in INACRAFT AWARD.

We produced the official T- shirt of

“Indonesia National Drift Champi-

onship 2013 series”and “Ngabubu

Drift 2013”.

IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANYONE RIGHT NOW WHO WOULD IT BE?Thom Yorke or Kanye West, maybe.

HAVE YOU ENDORSED PUBLIC FIGURE YET?Yes, musicians: Mikha angelo, The

Overtunes, Yacko, and Duo RI. Also

in motorsport scene: Rifat Sungkar,

Dri\inc Indonesia, Muhammad Fen-

no, GT-radial, Achilles Radial, IMI (

Ikatan Motor Indonesia),

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?They’re famous and wearing our

products, increasing brand aware-

ness.

IS THERE ANY CERTAIN CON-CEPT IN CHOPINJAVA?As an Indonesian brand, we have

a vision of introducing Indonesian

cultural heritage in our own way,

where Indonesian youth can use ag-

ributes today with a touch of their

own culture. We want to prove that

Indonesian heritage can be fused to

the trend in today’s youth.

Not only we take part in Retail

fashion industry, we also produce

products for Music, and Motorsport

events.

WHAT BATIK MOTIVE DO YOU USE FOR EACH COLLECTMON? WHAT’S THE IDEA BEHIND IT?Actually because our brand name is Chopin-

Java, it doesn’t mean that all of our collection

use or combine batik. We also use other several

Indonesian traditional fabrics, such as Tenun,

Ikat, songket, etc.

The idea is to enable Indonesian youth to use

today agributes with a touch of their own cul-

ture in day to day activity, and not only on “Fri-

day” which is considered as the batik day of

the week.

TALKING ABOUT WHAT’S SO CALLED “POCKET TEE” OF CHOPIN JAVA, CAN YOU EXPLAIN TO US A BIT?Well, maybe most of our T-shirt collection

is Pocket tee. Each pocket has its origin and

pagern from all different places in Indonesia.

We even gave the name of the product based

on the area of origin were the Ethnic Pattern

or fabric came from.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PIECE FROM CHOPIN JAVA? Chopin Java always tries to produce the best

quality product, inspired by nationalism. The

attention to detail that we try to give and always

try to provide the best for you with the right

harmony.

Every product that we produce always has a

cultural heritage background, like, our top

seller Denim shirt, “Arya Albastru” which has

been reproduced often, due to the high de-

mand.

A long Sleeve Denim Shirt combines

with Central Java’s Batik Truntum:

The Truntum motive was depicted

from jasmine flower.

The batik design was created by Kan-

jeng Ratu Kencana, the Queen of

Sunan Pakubuwono III. This motive

refers as love revitalizing. She created

this motive as a symbol of uncondi-

tional, everlasting love that continues

to grow (tumaruntum). This sold out

very fast, we think we’re going to pro-

duce “Arya Albastru II” really soon.

Sorry for too much history and myth

hehehe.

“We love Our Culture and History.

“ THE IDEA IS TO ENABLE

INDONESIAN YOUTH TO USE

TODAY’S ATTRIBUTES WITH A

TOUCH OF THEIR OWN CULTURE IN

THEIR DAY TO DAY ACTIVITY “

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU FIND REALLY INSPIRING YOU WHILE DESIGNING?We’re a fan of music; mostly we lis-

ten to The Beach Boys, Radiohead,

Kanye West, DJ Shadows, Miles da-

vis, Massive Agack, Pink Floyd, The

Velvet Underground, The Clash,

The Cure, Iwan Fals, Guruh Gipsy,

etc.

WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE TO WEAR CHOPIN JAVA?Office, college, beach, mountain,

street, clubs, stage. Anywhere, de-

pends on your self confidence.

IS THERE ANY PLAN OF EXPANDING TO WOMEN’S WEAR? WHY?Hmm, we heard a lot about this quesCon. I

think we will. But still don’t know when..

PLANS FOR 2014...Participate in INACRAFT 2014. Produce the

official T-shirt for The biggest Drifting FesCval

in Indonesia “Slide Fest 2014”. And currently

we’re making our own fabrics, for the new col-

lection.

We will be more independent, Expanding

more, more brand awareness, more idea, more

inspiration, good health, and most importantly

having a lot of fun in doing what we do right

now.
