Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness Foundation announces summer

volunteer opportunities

The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation (ABWF) has released its annual Guide to Volunteer Projects in the A-B Wilderness and is seeking volun-teers for 12 wilderness stewardship projects. These projects include: Join us on Saturday, June 25th, for a full day of weed warfare: pulling and digging houndstongue, knap-weed and anything else we find from the Bassett Creek/LaDuke Springs area. We’ll meet at the LaDuke trailhead at 9:00 am. There are a multitude of invasive weeds along this drainage leading into the A-B Wilderness, and we need your help spotting them and getting rid of them. On July 15-19th (Fri-Tue), the ABWF is offering a multi-day trip near the Gardiner/Jardine area. We will be hiking along the Bear Creek trail to Knox Lake, a wilderness lake that sits under the shoulder of Moni-tor Peak. We received a major grant to fund this turn-pike construction project, and we could use your help! We will be camping at the Bear Creek trailhead and hiking to and from the work site each day; so you can join us for some or all of the 5-day project. On August 11-17th (Thu-Wed): a more adventurous commitment! We’re leading a 7-day trip in the Lake Abundance wilderness area. This lovely lake lies be-low Daisy Pass northwest of Cooke City and is the gateway for this project. We will be reestablishing a little-used trail that works its way west toward Horse-shoe Mountain, eventually connecting to Lake of the Woods. Remember, we horse-pack your heavy items in for you! These and other projects are available to you June through September. Find out more about them, and be sure to register at our website www.abwilderness.org. Our events are FREE! Meals are provided! The Backcountry Horsemen or Forest Service horse pack in the heavy food and equipment. If trail work is not your thing, consider one of our Cit-izen Science trips. The ABWF is partnering with the Wilderness Institute to take small groups of volun-teers backpacking into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wil-derness and collecting data on the quality and kinds of recreational impacts we find at numerous sites in the backcountry. Three trips are planned: June 30-July 5, July 23-28, and Aug 16-21. Go to the Wil-derness Institute website to sign up: http://www.cfc.umt.edu/wi The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to the stewardship of the 944,000-acre A-B Wilderness. We depend on memberships and donations, government grants, and private foun-dation funding to be able to recruit citizen volunteers to help on our many trail projects, to hire summer in-terns who supplement the work of Forest Service trail crews, and provide education to various groups about the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Visit our website for more information, or to register for a trip: www.abwilderness.org or contact David Kallenbach at 406-425-1944.

Men face federal charges for walking to Yellowstone hot spring YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — A Canadian-based group of men who posted pictures and videos of their travels on social media are in hot water with Yellowstone National Park officials after walking out to a hot spring where people are prohibited. Rangers filed a criminal complaint Monday against three members of the group known as High on Life Sun-dayFundayz for walking out to the edge of Grand Prismatic Spring. The incident is the latest in what has been a spring filled with tourists violating Yellowstone rules. Last week international tourists loaded a bison calf into their car because they were worried about its health. "For us it is almost like a call to action," said Morgan Warthin, Yellowstone spokeswoman, after the bison in-cident. The Canadian group has posted an apology on its website and social networks for leaving the boardwalk path that visitors are required to stay on. The Park's pathways are there to protect tourists and sensitive hot springs. The filmmakers offered to donate up to $5,000 to the park. The group removed photos and video showing some of them touching the hot water at the Grand Prismatic Spring over the weekend.

National Park Service Calls on Visitors to Respect Wildlife and Safety Regulations

In recent weeks visitors in the park have been engaging in inappropriate, dangerous, and illegal behavior with wildlife. These actions endanger people and have now resulted in the death of a newborn bison calf. Last week in Yellowstone National Park visitors were cited for placing a newborn bison calf in their vehicle and transporting it to a park facility because of their misplaced concern for the animal's welfare. In terms of human safety this was a dangerous activity because adult animals are very protective of their young and will act aggressively to defend them. In addition, interference by people can cause mothers to reject their offspring. In this case Park Rangers tried repeatedly to reunite the newborn bison calf with the herd. These efforts failed. The bison calf was later euthanized because it was abandoned and causing a dangerous situation by continually approaching people and cars along the roadway. In a recent viral video a visitor approached within an arm's length of an adult bison in the Old Faithful area. Another video featured visi-tors posing for pictures with bison at extremely unsafe and illegal distances. Last year, five visitors were seriously injured when they approached bison too closely. Bison injure more visitors to Yellow-stone than any other animal. Approaching wild animals can drastically affect their well-being and, in this case, their survival. Park regulations require that you stay at least 25 yards (23 m) away from all wildlife (including bison, elk and deer) and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves. Disregarding these regulations can result in fines, injury, and even death. The safety of these animals, as well as human safe-ty, depends on everyone using good judgment and following these simple rules. For more information about safety in Yellowstone, visit https://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/safety.htm.
