Recent photos from Bigelow Mountain, Maine with particular focus on the visual impact of proposed nearby wind power projects. Bigelow Mountain is a National Natural Monument and the Bigelow Preserve is a State of Maine natural resource of significance. Wind towers are proposed 8 miles from this location. Near this location (about 0.3 miles north of Avery Peak) just before the Old Man’s Head viewpoint, is the 2,000 mile milestone for northbound hikers and will be a popular stopping and viewing point.

About 6 of the project’s turbines will be placed along this nearest ridgeline. Other turbines will be visible but at more distant views. Proposed turbines would be 5 miles from this location.

The Appalachian Trail follows the ridge on the northside of Little Bigelow Mtn. There are open and partial views of Stewart Mtn. along approximately 2 miles of trail north of Little Bigelow Mtn.
